Über den Wolken

Seit Tagen ist es grau und trist in Frankfurt - und dann sehe ich auf der Webcam, dass ganz oben im Taunus die Sonne scheint! Nichts wie raus!!

Tatsächlich war es dann ein Frage von wenigen Metern, die Wolkendecke schob sich immer mal wieder so weit nach oben, dass ich zum Teil im Nebel malte...

Toll so von oben auf die Wolken gucken zu können!

It's been grey and dreary in Frankfurt for days - and then I see on the webcam that the sun is shining all the way up in the Taunus! Let's get out of here!

In fact, it was a matter of a few metres, the cloud cover pushed up so far that I was partly painting in the fog...

It was great to be able to look at the clouds from above!

Porträt Nr. 4

Wenn es da draußen so grau und kalt ist (und ich auch nicht erst in den Taunus fahren will um Schnee zu malen, ist das Porträtmalen eine wunderbare Übersprungshandlung.

Und wie erfreulich: ich werde langsam etwas schneller...

Allerdings ist das rechtzeitige Aufhören ein großes Thema, wenn ich vom Foto abmale... so habe ich vieles, was schon früh so gelassen hätte werden können wieder und wieder übermalt.

Dadurch hat das Bild wieder an Lockerheit verloren.

Ich bleib dran...

When it's so grey and cold out there (and I don't want to drive to the Taunus to paint snow either), painting portraits is a wonderful skipping action.

And how gratifying: I'm slowly getting a little faster....

However, stopping in time is a big issue when I paint from the photo.... so I've painted over and over a lot of things that could have been left that way early on.

As a result, the painting has lost its looseness again.

I'll keep at it...

… und noch ein Bach im Schnee

 

Das ist der gleiche Bach den ich gestern malte, sogar die gleiche Stelle, nur dass ich dieses Mal die Blickrichtung gewechselt habe…

Da mir die beiden letzen Bilder zu weich gemacht waren, wollte ich dieses  mal bewusst grobere Pinselstriche setzen. Es ist aber schwierig das Weiche des Schnees ohne das Ineinandermalen hinzubekommen… ich glaube, ich müsste den Kontrast der Farben zueinander noch weiter reduzieren.

Aber Spaß hat es auch heute wieder gemacht - dieses Mal hat mich mein Mann auch dabei gefilmt, hier könnt ihr ein Video sehen, das zeigt wie wunderschön es dort war.

This is the same creek I painted yesterday, even the same place, only this time I changed the direction of my view...

Since both last paintings were too soft for me, I wanted to deliberately use rougher brush strokes this time. But it is difficult to get the softness of the snow without painting into each other... I think I would have to reduce the contrast of the colours to each other even more.

But it was fun again today - this time my husband also filmed me doing it, here you can see a video that shows how beautiful it was there.

Ein weiterer Bach im Schnee

Solange dort oben in Taunus Schnee liegt (und noch dazu die Sonne so schön scheint) muss ich dir Gelegenheit nutzen und ihn auch malen:-)

Diese Stelle war ziemlich schwierig zu erreichen, der Schnee war tiefer als gedacht und erschwerte das Laufen schon sehr: aber das Stapfen hat sich gelohnt! So ein wunderschöner Platz!

As long as there is snow up there in Taunus (and the sun is shining so beautifully) I have to take the opportunity and paint it too :-)

This place was quite difficult to reach, the snow was deeper than expected and made walking very difficult: but the trudging was worth it! Such a beautiful place! 

Bach mit Schneehubbeln

Es hat noch mehr geschneit im Taunus: nix wie raus!

Ich fand die Schnee Hubbel am Nach total irre - und dann leider relativ schwierig sie zu malen, dass sie sich wirklich su hubbelig aussehen…

It snowed even more in the Taunus: let's go out!

I found the snow bumps at the stream totally crazy - and then unfortunately relatively difficult to paint them, so that they really look bumpy...

 

Noch ein Porträt

Ich bin wirklich angefixt:

Hier ist ein weiteres Porträt, dieses mal nach eine Fotoreferenz, die ich auf der MuseumsApp von Sktchy gefunden habe: auf diese Plattform stellen Menschen Fotos als Inspiration zur Verfügung, mit der ausdrücklichen Erlaubnis gemalt zu werden, und gleichzeitig  zeigen dort Menschen ihre Bilder, Side by Side mit den Inspirationen. Tolle Sache, das!

Das Porträt kommt dem schon ziemlich nahe, wo ich hin will, auch bin ich mit knapp 4 Stunden schon deutlich schneller geworden.

Trotzdem ist es noch sehr anstrengend und ein weiter Weg für mich.

Macht aber total Spaß!

I'm really hooked:

Here's another portrait, this time based on a photo reference I found on Sktchy's MuseumApp: on this platform people post photos as inspiration, with explicit permission to be painted, and at the same time people show their paintings there, side by side with the inspirations. Great thing, that!

The portrait is already pretty close to where I want to go, also I have already become much faster with just under 4 hours.

Still very tiring and a long way to go for me though.

But is totally fun!

Holzhaufen im Schnee

Jetzt, nach den Feiertagen, ist es im Taunus endlich nicht mehr so voller Menschen, so dass ich mich wieder auf den Weg in den Schnee gemacht habe.

Diesen Sonnenstrahl musste ich sehr zügig einfangen - unglaublich, wie schnell die Sonne hinter den Bäumen verschwand!

Es war ein gute Übung diesen Haufen wiederzugeben ohne jeden Stock einzeln zu malen: ich hbae tatsächlich nur gemalt, was ich sah, ohne es zu deuten und zuzuordnen - nur die Farben nebeneinander e: und Tadaa: es wurde ein Haufen :-)

Now, after the holidays, it is finally no longer so full of people in the Taunus, so I made my way back to the snow.

I had to capture this sunbeam very quickly - unbelievable how fast the sun disappeared behind the trees!

It was a good exercise to reproduce this pile without painting each stick individually: I hbae actually just painted what I saw without interpreting and assigning it - just the colors next to each other e: and Tadaa: it became a pile :-)

Ich habe mich an mein nächstes Porträt getraut: mein Mann hatte sich gewünscht von mir gemalt zu werden.

Noch habe ich vom Foto gemalt - ich bin ja noch am üben. Und das war auch gut für ihn, weil ich mit 5 Stunden wieder eeewig gemalt, wenn auch nicht ganz so lange wie am ersten Poträt.

Ich habe ihn tatsächlich ein paar Jahre älter und runder gemalt als er ist (subjektive Wahrnehmung?), aber seinenAusdruck habe ich erstaunlich gut hinbekommen, da wqr ich selbst ganz überrascht :-)

Ich habe mich an die Vorgehensweise aus dem Porträtmalkurs von Torsten gehalten, die hilft mir wirklich sehr auf diesem mir noch ungewohnten Terrain.

I dared to paint my next portrait: my husband had wanted to be painted by me.

Still I painted from the photo - I'm still practicing. And that was also good for him, because I painted with 5 hours again much tooo looong, although not quite as long as on the first potrait.

I actually painted him a few years older and rounder than he is (subjective perception?), but his expression I got amazingly well, I was quite surprised myself :-)

I followed the procedure from the portrait painting course by Torsten, which really helps me a lot on this unfamiliar terrain.

Potraitkurs

Und nun mal was ganz anderes!

Zwischen den Jahren habe ich einen Portraitkurs mitgemacht, online über die Plattform Domestika (bei der auch hoffentlich ganz bald mein eigner im August gedrehter Pleinairmalerei Kurs erscheinen wird!)

Der Kurs ist von meinem Malerkollegen Torsten Wolber und ich kann ihn jedem der lernen möchte freier zu malen (egal welches Sujet) wärmsten an Herz legen:

Moderne Portraitmalerei mit Ölfarben

Torsten will seinen Schülern beibringen möglichst lange möglichst umkonkret mit seinem Motiv zu bleiben, sich nicht zu früh festzulegen, Zufälle zuzulassen, sich vom Bild zeigen zu lassen wo es hinwill und nicht zu sehr lenken zu wollen, wie das Bild zu werden hat. Und genau das gelingt ihm absolut! Schon gleich mein erstes Portrait zeigt eine Lockerheit, die ich in meinen Ölbildern nur selten erreicht habe!

Ich muss allerdings zugeben, dass ich schon sehr gekämpft habe:

Ich musste zum einen meine Ungeduld zügeln, wollte immer schon gleich an die Details, zum anderen habe ich an meinem Bild seeewig gemalt (ich glaube noch nie war ich 7(!) Stunden am Stück mit einem Bild beschäftigt) Da fehlte mir definitiv ein bisschen der Zeitdruck, den ich wenn ich "from live" malte immer habe.

Außerdem habe ich während des Prozesses auf der Zielgerade ein wenig die Proportionen verloren. Ich habe dann einfach auf die Ähnlichkeit verzichtet und versucht wenigstens anatomisch glaubwürdig zu bleiben.

Auge und Nasen waren gar nicht so schwer zu malen, wie ich dachte, mit dem Mund hingegen habe ich mich sehr schwer getan... den musste ich mehrfach ganz neu malen - deswegen wurde er wohl immer größer...

Mit den gemalten Locken bin ich auf jeden Fall richtig glücklich, Hauttöne zu mischen hat mir auch überraschend viel Spaß gemacht.

Beim Fazit:

Dieser ganz behutsame Bildaufbau (nach einem wilden Anfang), der Tipp mit dem Bild im Dialog zu bleiben statt ihm seinen eigenen Willen aufzudrücken (schöne Stellen erkennen und stehen lassen, Fehler danach zu beurteilen ob sie überhaupt stören, nicht das ganze Bild fertig malen zu wollen) hat mir ganz viel beigebracht, was ich hoffentlich ab jetzt in meine Malerei einfließen lassen kann.

And now something completely different!

Between the years I took part in a portrait course, online via the platform Domestika (where I hope my own plein air painting course, which was shot in August, will be published very soon!)

The course is by my painter colleague Torsten Wolber and I can warmly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to paint more painterly and loosely (no matter what the subject):

Modern Portrait Painting with Oil Colours

Torsten wants to teach his students to stay as long as possible as umconcrete as possible with his motif, not to commit too early, to allow coincidences, to let the painting show him where it wants to go and not to want to steer too much how the painting has to become. And that is exactly what he succeeds in doing! Even my first portrait shows a looseness that I have rarely achieved in my oil paintings!

I have to admit, though, that I was already struggling a lot:

On the one hand, I had to curb my impatience, I always wanted to get to the details right away, on the other hand, I worked on my painting for hours (I don't think I have ever been busy with a painting for 7(!) hours at a time).

Also, during the process, I lost the proportions a bit on the home stretch. I then simply dispensed with the resemblance and tried to remain at least anatomically credible.

The eyes and nose were not as difficult to paint as I thought, but I had a hard time with the mouth... I had to repaint it several times - that's why it got bigger and bigger...

In any case, I'm really happy with the painted curls, mixing skin tones was also surprisingly fun.

On the conclusion:

This very careful build up of the painting (after a wild beginning), the tip to stay in dialogue with the painting instead of imposing your own will on it (recognise beautiful parts and leave them, judge mistakes according to whether they bother you at all, don't want to finish the whole painting) has taught me a lot that I hope I can incorporate into my painting from now on.
