Kleines Eppental im Schnee

 

Ich habe es mir sehnlichst gewünscht – und wurde erhört:

Auf der Zielgeraden des Winters fiel über Nacht endlich Schnee im Eppental. Als ich wach wurde war der Schnee schon fast wieder weggetaut, ich bin deshalb noch vor dem Kaffee los und habe den tauenden Schnee im Regen gemalt.

Und damit habe ich ich meine 4 Jahreszeiten Serie des kleinen Eppentals komplett!

Mission competed!

I wished for it so much – and my wish was granted:

As winter drew to a close, snow finally fell overnight in Eppental. When I woke up, the snow had almost melted away, so I set off before I'd even had my coffee and painted the melting snow in the rain.

And with that, my series of the four seasons in little Eppental is complete!

Schnee im Günthersburgpark

In der Pfalz habe ich den Schnee leider immer verpaßt- dort hat es einfach nie geschneit, wenn ich dort war... Aber jetzt, wo ich mal kurz in Frankfurt bin hatte ich endlich doch noch die Gelegenheit im Günthersburgpark ein richtiges Schnee-Winterbild zu malen... und das sogar mit Sonne (und den wunderschönen blauen Schatten!).

 Unfortunately, I always missed the snow in the Palatinate Forest—it simply never snowed when I was there... But now that I'm in Frankfurt for a short while, I finally had the opportunity to paint a real snowy winter scene in Günthersburgpark... and even with sunshine (and beautiful blue shadows!).

Pfälzer Wald im Nebel

 

Nach nur einem halben Tag Sonnenschein ist das Wetter schon wieder so wie bisher das ganze Jahr war: bewölkt und grau. 

Glücklicherweise ist es mittlerweile etwas wärmer, sodass ich endlich auch mal diese wunderschön ästhetischen Grautöne gemalt habe.

After only half a day of sunshine, the weather is just like it has been all the year until now: cloudy and grey. Fortunately, it is warmer now, so I have finally painted these beautifully aesthetic shades of grey in the mist.
 

Baumwurzeln

 

Nach dem ich gleich morgens nach dem Kaffe das erste Bild gemalt habe, habe ich das schöne Wetter genutzt und bin gleich noch mal in den Wald um noch ein Bild zu malen. Leider ist die Sonne hinter den Wolken verschwunden, aber ich habe ein Motiv gefunden, das mich auch ohne Licht inspiriert hat.

Bei diesem Bild wollte ich weniger abbilden, was vor mir ist, sondern vor allem die Strukturen der Steine und Wurzeln auf dem Waldboden verstehen. Vielleicht ist es ein bisschen mit mir durchgegangen - aber ich bin sehr glücklich dass mir der Versuch gelungen ist.

After painting right in the morning after coffee, I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went back into the forest to paint another one. Unfortunately, the sun disappeared behind the clouds, but I found a motif that inspired me even without light.

With this painting, I wanted to depict less of what was in front of me and focus more on understanding the structures of the stones and roots on the forest floor. Perhaps I got a little carried away, but I am very happy that my attempt was successful.

Eppental im Morgenlicht

 

Nach gefühlt 2 Wochen mit nur Regen oder Nebel kam heute endlich die Sonne raus.

Ich habe gleich nach dem Kaffee mein Malzeug gepackt und den schönen Sonnen-Schatten Kontrast im kleinen Eppental gemalt. Die Sonne stieg sehr schnell - dass ich mich so beeilen musste verhinderte dass ich zu lange an meinem Bild malte und so blieb alles schön rough und locker.

After what felt like two weeks of nothing but rain or fog, the sun finally came out today.

Right after coffee, I packed my painting supplies and painted the beautiful contrast between sun and shade in the small Eppental valley. The sun rose very quickly, so I had to hurry, which prevented me from spending too much time on my painting, and everything remained nice and rough and loose.

Um diesen Sonnenuntergang zu erwischen, musste ich etwas den Hügel hoch... und kam der Geschwindigkeit, wie das schöne Licht verschwand kaum hinterher.

Ich malte das Bild dann im Dunkeln zu ende...

 To catch this sunset, I had to climb a little way up the hill... and could barely keep up with the speed at which the beautiful light was disappearing.

I then finished the painting in the dark...

Schilf in der Wintersonne

Heute kam die Sonne noch mal raus – und wärmte tatsächlich schon ein bisschen (wobei der See noch immer eine dünne Eisschicht hat).

Dieses Bild malte ich begleitet vom Gurgeln des Überlaufs und dem Rascheln des Schilfs... ich hab mich sehr wohl gefühlt: wahrscheinlich hab ich deshalb etwas länger als sonst (und deswegen auch detaillierter) gemalt.

Today, the sun came out again – and actually warmed things up a little (although the lake still has a thin layer of ice on it).

I painted this one accompanied by the gurgling of the overflow and the rustling of the reeds... I felt very comfortable: that's probably why I painted a little longer than usual (and therefore in more detail).

Als ich sah, dass heute die Sonne schien, hatte ich auf ein bisschen wärmere Temperaturen beim Schneemalen gehofft... leider stand ich oben auf den Feldern ungeschützt im schneidenden Wind...

Ich hab mich dann sehr beeilt, es trotzdem nicht geschafft fertig zu werden, bevor die Sonne verschwand.

Brrrrr...

 

Schrebergarten im Schnee

Und es sind sogar noch ein paar Millimeter Schnee dazu gekommen!

Noch immer schniefend und hustend bin ich in die Schrebergärten gezogen und hab diesen wunderschönen Holzstapel gefunden. Der Schnee hat für klare Kontraste gesorgt und somit das Durcheinander gut strukturiert, dass es einfacher zu malen war als ohne Schnee.

Gemalt hab ich dieses Bild auf einer alten Malplatte: Upcycling :-)

 

And there was even a few millimeters of snow on top of that: so rare down here in Frankfurt!

Still sniffling and coughing, I went to the allotment gardens and found this beautiful pile of wood. The snow provided clear contrasts and thus structured the mess well, making it easier to paint than without snow.

Sonne und Schnee in Frankfurt!

 

Nachdem ich 2 Wochen mit einer fiesen Erkältung flach lag, bin ich endlich wieder zurück in meinem Atelier: in Frankfurt liegt ein bisschen Schnee und es scheint sogar die Sonne.

Ach wenn es wahrscheinlich einigermaßen dämlich ist mich in die die Käte zu stellen, konnte ich einfach nicht widerstehen und hab diese wunderschön blauen Schatten gemalt.

Ein guter Start ins neue Mal-Jahr, wie ich finde!

After being laid low with a nasty cold for two weeks, I'm finally back in my studio: there's a little snow in Frankfurt and the sun is even shining.

Even though it's probably a bit foolish to put myself out in the cold, I just couldn't resist and painted these beautiful blue shadows.

A good start to the new painting year, I think!

Baumwurzeln

An diesem trüben feuchten Tag wollte ich gar nicht erst weit weg sondern hab einfach geguckt, was ich direkt vor der Tür finde: je länger man so ein unspektakulären Motiv betrachtet, umso mehr schöne Details (vor allen in den Farbnuancen) fallen einem auf: ie wieder werde ich einfach so an diesem Baum vorbei gehen können.

Ich hoffe ich kann euch damit den Geruch nach feuchtem Laub und Erde vermitteln.

Dieses Bild sieht nur unter freiem Himmel so aus, wie ich es gemalt habe: die Farbwerte wirken im Haus viel zu dunkel und zu kontrastarm. Das passiert mir immer mal wieder: Obwohl ich seit über 12 Jahren draußen male, weiß ich noch immer nicht, wie ich dieses Problem lösen könnte - es einfach heller als ich es im Motiv vor mir sehe anzulegen – da kommen mir draußen beim Malen die Tonwerte alle "falsch" vor.

On this dull, damp day, I didn't want to go far, but simply looked at what I could find right outside my door: the longer you observe such an unspectacular motif, the more beautiful details (especially in the color nuances) you notice: I will never be able to walk past this tree again without seeing it in this way.

I hope I can convey the smell of damp leaves and earth to you.

This painting only looks the way I painted it when it's outdoors: indoors, the values appear much too dark and lack contrast. This happens to me every now and then: although I've been painting outdoors for over 12 years, I still don't know how to solve this problem—simply making it brighter than I perceive it in front of me—that’s nearly impossible when I'm painting outdoors, baucause all the values would seem “wrong” to me.

 

Nonnenfels bei Bad Dürkheim

 

Nun bin ich schon über 1 Jahr im wunderschönen Pfälzer Wald – doch dieses wunderschöne Motiv in der Nachbarschaft hab ich jetzt erst entdeckt: der Nonnenfelsen.

Den werd ich bestimmt wieder malen: ein großartige Location (und noch dazu in angenehmer Rad Entfernung).

I've been living in the beautiful Palatinate Forest for over a year now, but I've only just discovered this wonderful motif in the neighborhood: the Nonnenfelsen (Nuns' Rock).

I'll definitely paint it again: it's a great location (and within easy cycling distance).

Keine Ahnung, was mich geritten hat an dem bisher kältesten Tag des Winters mit meinem Malzeug loszuziehen... ach doch: ich weiß es wieder:

Es ist das wunderschöne Licht der flachstehenden Sonne und die tolle Farbigkeit des Raureifs.

I have no idea what possessed me to set off with my painting equipment on the coldest day of winter so far... oh yes, I remember again:

it's the beautiful light of the low sun and the amazing colors of the hoarfrost.

Bei diesem Bild hatte ich was ganz anderes vor:

ich wollte die Berge und das Wasser in großen Flächen anlegen - und die Häuser nur mit ein paar Farbstipsen.

Das ist mir nicht gelungen - deshalb werde ich das wohl noch mal versuchen müssen...

I had something completely different in mind for this painting:

I wanted to paint the mountains and the water in large shapes - and the houses with just a few dots of color.

I didn't succeed - so I'll probably have to try again...

Wintersonne im Pfälzer Wald

Dieses Bild malte ich bei fast schon frühlinglichen Temperaturen am Hang hinter unserem Haus.

Ich wollte nur ein bisschen von der Sonne erwischen, die bei uns unten schon weg war und malte dann einfach was ich von dort aus sehen konnte.

Wieder mal habe ich sie einiges meines schönen Bildanfangs nicht erkannt und übermalt, den richtigen Zeitpunkt verpasst aufzuhören. Dafür hatte ich es aber richtig schön dort oben auf einem Baumstamm sitzen (zu Stehen ist der Hang zu steil).

Bildanfang

I painted this one on the slope behind our house in almost spring-like temperatures.

I just wanted to catch a bit of the sun, which was already gone down below, so I just painted what I could see from there.

Once again, I didn't recognize some parts of the beautiful start of my painting and painted over it, missing the right moment to stop. But I had a really nice time sitting up there on a tree trunk (the slope is too steep to stand on).

 

Haus am See im großen Eppental

 

Dieses kleine Häuschen steht im großen Eppental.

Eigentlich wollte ich nur die schöne Contre Jour Lichtstimmung dieses sonnigen Wintertags im Wald malen, aber während des Malens hab ich mich geradezu in verknallt in das Häuschen und immer mehr Details hinzugefügt – auch die Spiegelung wurde immer interessanter für mich.

So ist jetzt was ganz anderes, als ich wollte, bei dem Bild herausgekommen - aber das ist ja da Schöne beim Malen: man weiß wenn man anfängt nie, was am Ende bei rauskommt.

This little house stands in the Großen Eppental.

Actually, I only wanted to paint the beautiful contre jour light mood of this sunny winter day in the forest, but while I was painting I fell in love with the little house and added more and more details - the reflection also became more and more interesting to me.

The result is something completely different from what I wanted - but that's the joy of painting: when you start, you never know what you'll end up with.

Heute Morgen war hier im Wald eine ganz besonders schöne Atmosphäre: die Sonne kämpfte sich durch den Nebel ... den sie dann bei Steigen leider immer mehr auflöste.

This morning in the forest was particularly atmospheric - I had to hurry, because the fog quickly disappeared with the rising sun.

Das ist von den Motiven, die ich schon oft und lang betrachtet habe und dabei immer dachte, das sollte ich mal malen... und heute habe ich es endlich getan. Fast immer, wenn ich solche Bilder dann endlich mal, fließen die mir geradezu aus dem Pinsel - was wohl daran liegt, dass ich sie beim Betrachten im Geiste schon gemalt hatte, und das nun nur noch reproduzieren muss.

Ich liebe es Nebel zu malen: nicht nur wegen der schönen Atmosphäre, sondern es ist auch eine ganz besonders gut Übung Tonwerte zu beurteilen.

Außerdem geht es meisten recht schnell: der Nebel ist ein Meister darin Motive zu vereinfachen.

This is one of the motifs that I've looked at many times and for a long time, always thinking that I should paint it... and today I finally did it. Almost always, when I finally paint such pictures, they just flow out of my brush - which is probably because I had already painted them in my mind when I looked at them and now I just have to recreate them.

I love painting fog: not only because of the beautiful atmosphere, but it's also a particularly good exercise to judge tonal values.

Besides, it is usually quite quick: the fog is a master at simplifying motifs.

Schilf am Schlangenweiher

Das ist das Schilf, das auf meinem Bild von letzter Woche am anderen Seeufer zu sehen war.

Schon öfter dachte ich bei meiner morgendlichen Laufrunde wie wunderschön die Püschel im Gegenlicht leuchten.. ich malte es dann etwas zu spät am Nachmittag: Samstags bei schönem Wetter gab es eine Menge Passanten mit ihren Gesprächen und Kommentaren, so dass es echt schwer war, fokussiert zu bleiben, während die Sonne leider viel zu schnell schnell verschwand.

Deshalb denke ich, dass ich das bald nochmals in Ruhe versuchen werde.

 

These are the reeds I painted a view days ago, this time I was on the other side of the pond.
On this sunny Saturday there were a lot of passer-by with their chats and comments, so it was really challenging to keep the focus, while the sun was disappearing quickly.
That’s why I think I will paint another approach to the reeds soon …

Baum in der Wintersonne

Auf der Suche nach einem Motiv bliebe mein Blick an diesem Baum hängen: vor allem das Muster der beleuchteten und schattigen Äste fand ich spannend.

Ein bisschen habe ich jedoch das Gefühl diesem wunderschönen Motiv nicht ganz gerecht geworden zu sein.

In my search for a motif, my gaze lingered on this tree: I found the pattern of the illuminated and shaded branches particularly fascinating.

However, I have the feeling that I haven't quite done justice to this beautiful motif.
