Herbst im Günthersburgpark

Obwohl es mir eigentlich an einem Sonntag im Günthersburgpark zu voll zum Malen ist, musste ich bei dem Sonnenschein raus - zu schnell verlieren die Bäume ihre Blätter und der Herbstzauber ist wieder vorbei!

Ich wollte mich für keins der wunderschönen Motive entscheiden – so habe ich sie einfach alle gemalt :-)

Pro Ölskizze habe ich zwischen 20 und 30 Minuten gebraucht.

Although it's actually too crowded for me to paint on a Sunday in Günthersburgpark, I had to get out in the sunshine - the trees lose their leaves too quickly and the autumn magic is over again!

I didn't want to choose any of the beautiful motifs - so I just painted them all :-)

It took me between 20 and 30 minutes per oil sketch.

 

Herbst im botanischen Garten

Dieses wunderschöne Herbstmotiv fand ich am See im botanischen Garten - und ich muss zu meiner Schande gestehen, dass ich dort bisher noch nie war!

Das war kurz vor knapp, er schließt pünktlich zum November und öffnet erst wieder im März: Dann werdet ihr bestimmt noch viele weitere Pleinairbilder von mir aus dem botanische Garten zu sehen bekommen!

Ich habe bei diesem Bild ziemlich gekämpft: da ich keine Malplatten mehr hatte, habe ich ein alte recycelt. Diese hatte aber eine so grobe Leinwandstruktur, dass ich sehr Mühe beim Auftragen der Farben hatte - vor allem als ich den Malspachtel benutzte.

Solche groben Leinwände werde ich definitiv in Zukunft meiden.

I found this beautiful autumn motif by the lake in the botanical garden - and I must confess that I have never been there before!

That was just before it closed in time for November and will not open again until March: then you will certainly see many more plein air paintings of me from the botanical garden!

I struggled quite a bit with this painting: since I had no more painting panels, I recycled an old one. But this one had such a rough canvas texture that I have a lot of trouble applying the paints - especially when I used the painting knife.

I will definitely avoid such coarse canvases in the future.

 

Maronenbaum im Herbst

Mittlerweile haben sich schon viel mehr Bäume verfärbt, bzw. die ersten sind sogar schon nackt?!

Diesen Maronenbaum fand ich auf dem Gelände Heiligenstock nördlich von Frankfurt. Mein Fokus lag nicht nur auf dem knallig durchleuchteten Laub des Baums sondern auch auf dem wunderbar wild wachsendem hohen Gras im Gegenlicht.

In the meantime, many more trees have changed colour, or the first ones are even naked?

I found this chestnut tree on the Heiligenstock site north of Frankfurt. My focus was not only on the brightly illuminated foliage of the tree but also on the wonderfully wildly growing tall grass in the backlight.

 

Der Herbst kommt! Rote Brombeerblätter

 

Noch sind es nur vereinzelte Blätter die sich färben: es geht aber in Riesenschritten auf den Herbst zu – und ich freue mich schon sehr auf die Farben!

Am Wochenende kam die Sonne raus und radelte in die Felder:

Es war supertoll nach all den Grüns diese Rottöne malen zu können, diese Blätter gehören zu einem Brombeerstrauch - und es war tatsächlich nur dieser eine Ast, der nicht mehr grün war.

There are still only a few leaves turning colour, but autumn is approaching in leaps and bounds - and I am really looking forward to the colours!

It was super great to be able to paint these reds after all the greens, these leaves belong to a blackberry bush - and it was actually just this one branch that was no longer green.

Und das ist meine Ausbeute der Malwoche mit Alfons Kiefer und Torsten Wolber  im Elsass.

Ein paar der Bilder erstaunen mich selbst: ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass ich sie so malen kann!
Es ist eben immer wieder sehr motivierend und inspirierend mit den beiden zu malen - und Spaß macht es außerdem:-)

Ich werde die beiden mal fragen, ob ich die Übersicht all unserer Bilder hier posten darf - das liefere ich dann nach.

Und im besten Fall schaffen wir es auch unseren gemeinsamen Blog wieder zu beleben, dann könnt ihr dort deren Bilder sehen!

And this is the result of my painting week with Alfons Kiefer and Torsten Wolber in Alsace.
Some of the paintings amaze me myself: I wouldn't have thought that I could paint them like that!

It is always very motivating and inspiring to paint with the two of them - and it is also fun :-)
I'll ask them if I can post the overview of all our paintings here - I'll do that later.

And in the best case, we will also manage to revive our joint blog, then you can see their paintings there!

Elsass – Blick über Hunawihr zum Schwarzwald

Und das ist das Abschlussbild unserer Artretreat Woche im Elsass:

Der Himmel wurde immer dramatischer, ich malte als die Sonne immer mal wieder hervorblickte schnell die beleuchteten Stellen ins Bild - ein schöner Effekt, wie diese lichter nun rausleuchten, oder? 

And this is the final painting of our artretreat week in Alsace:

The view over Hunawihr towards the Black Forest.

The sky became more and more dramatic, I quickly painted the illuminated areas into the painting as the sun peeked out every now and then - a beautiful effect, how these lights now illuminate, isn't it? 

Elsass – Weintrauben

 

Diese Weintrauben zu malen war total schön: ich saß in der warmen Herbstsonne im Gras im Weinberg zwischen den Reben und freute mich :-)

Leider ist das Bild zuhause gar nicht mehr so, wie ich es vor Ort malte: die Kontraste gingen total verloren! ich weiß nicht ob das an der Chemie der Farben liegt, oder an der Beleuchtung vor Ort...?

Ich hätte es jetzt in Photoshop faken können – aber das wäre schon sehr gemogelt :-)

Auf dem Foto seht ihr, wie ich's eigentlich gemalt habe:

Painting these grapes was totally beautiful: I sat in the warm autumn sun in the grass in the vineyard between the vines and was happy :-)

Unfortunately, the painting at home is not at all like I painted it on location: the contrasts were totally lost! I don't know if this is due to the chemistry of the colours, or the lighting on location...?

I could have faked it in Photoshop - but that would be cheating :-)

Elsass – Hunawihr

 

Leider schon der letzte Tag: der aber begrüßte uns mit strahlendem Sonnenschein!

Ich fand dieses schön beleuchtete Haus in der Ortsmitte - der Schatten wanderte leider wahnsinnig schnell...! Aber auch gut, so bin ich relativ locker für meine Verhältnisse geblieben.

Das Ergebnis find ich ein bisschen irre: ich sehe da immer ein Haus im Haus :-)

Morgens ist es im Ort übrigens sehr ruhig: die Traktoren waren wohl alle schon außerhalb in den Weinbergen unterwegs :-)

Unfortunately, it was already the last day: but it greeted us with bright sunshine!

I found this beautifully illuminated house in the centre of the village - unfortunately, the shade moved very quickly...! But it was also good, so I stayed relatively relaxed for my circumstances.

I find the result a bit crazy: I always see a house in the house :-)

By the way, it's very quiet in the village in the morning: the tractors were probably all already out in the vineyards :-)

Elsass – Barque sur la Fèchte

 

Zurück in Frankreich haben wir dieses kleine Barke auf einem Seitenarm der Ill entdeckt (la Fèchte)

Ich fand es super so fast ungegenständlich nur die Farben zu malen, die ich vor mir hatte.

Damit ich nicht zu viele Details male, habe ich dieses mal zuerst das Boot gemalt – so hatte ich das einzige Detail, um das es geht schon im Sack und konnte beim Rest leichter unkomkret bleiben....

Back in France we discovered this little barque on a branch of the Ill (la Fèchte).

I found it great to paint only the colours I had in front of me in such an almost non-representational way.

To avoid painting too many details, I painted the boat first this time - this way I had the only detail I wanted to paint already in the bag and it was easier to be vague about the rest....

Elsass – knapp daneben: auf der deutschen Rheinseite

 

Wir haben ausnahmsweise den Elsass verlassen und sind nach Deutschland auf die andere Rheinsaeite gefahren. Dort haben wir uns mit Ingo Ulrich getroffen um zusammen zu malen.

Die Felsen die im grünlichen Wasser verschwanden haben meinen Blick sofort gefesselt – das war schon fast ein bretonisches Motiv für mich :-)

Es war richtig schön zu viert dort zu stehen und zu quatschen - vor allem, da wir alle total unterschiedlich malen ...

Das war den Ausflug über die Grenze wert (ach: und auch die Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, die wir uns danach im Gartencafe gönnten :-))

vier Maler - vier völlig unterschiedliche Bilder!

For once, we left Alsace and went to Germany on the other side of the Rhine. There we met up with Ingo Ulrich to paint together.

The rocks that disappeared into the greenish water immediately caught my eye - it was almost a Breton motif for me :-)

It was really nice for the four of us to stand there and chat - especially since we all paint in totally different ways ...

It was worth the trip across the border (oh: and also the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte we had afterwards in the garden café :-)) 

Elsass – Fenster

Zurück aus dem Wald (und einem Kaffee im Warmen zum Auftauen) bin ich noch mal losgezogen und habe dieses schöne Motiv in unserem Wohnort Hunawihr gefunden. 

Es hat mir viel Spaß gemacht all die kleinen schäbigen Details zu malen, die im Kontrast zur großen malerischen Fläche der Fassade schön herausstechen.

Auch wenn die Gasse sehr klein und ruhig auf dem Foto unten aussieht, bretterten dort  an diesem Abend Trecker beladen mit Weintrauben im Minutentakt an mir vorbei – der ganze Ort brummt während der Weinlese!

Back from the forest (and a coffee in the warmth to defrost) I went out again and found this beautiful motif in our home town of Hunawihr. 

I had a lot of fun painting all the little shabby details that stood out beautifully in contrast to the large painterly area of the façade.

Even though the alley looks very small and quiet in the photo below, tractors loaded with grapes roared past me every minute that evening - the whole place is buzzing during the grape harvest!

Elsass – Bach im Wald

  

Obwohl der Tag so sonnig angefangen hatte, zog es sich wieder zu und wir malten im Wald, teilweise wieder im Regen.

Ich war dann aber ganz glücklich an diesem Bach ein so kontrastreiches Motiv gefunden zu haben...

Ich hatte ausnahmsweise mal einen Plan, habe mich vor allem auf die Tonwerte konzentriert und versucht den Bach nicht Stein für Stein abzumalen, sondern das Wesentliche zu erfassen - eher so, wie ich sonst Wellen oder Wolken und ähnlich unspezifisches male.

Und tatsächlich habe ich auch endlich mal geschafft, nicht überall wieder drüber zu malen, es gibt in diesem Bild mehrere Stellen, an denen ich die Untermalung stehen ließ, was dem Bild wirklich gut tut!

Ich glaube, das ist mein Lieblingsbild aus der Malwoche im Elsass :-)

Although the day had started so sunny, it clouded over again and we painted in the forest, partly in the rain again.

But then I was quite happy to have found such a contrasting motif at this brook...

For once I had a plan, concentrated on the tonal values and tried not to paint the brook stone by stone, but to capture the essence - more like I usually paint waves or clouds and similar unspecific things.

And in fact I finally managed not to paint over it again everywhere, there are several places in this picture where I left the underpainting, which is really good for the picture!

I think this is my favourite painting from the painting week in Alsace :-)

Elsass – Weinreben im Morgenlicht

 

Am nächsten Morgen wurde ich von der Sonne, die ins Zimmer schien geweckt: Ich bin dann noch vor dem Kaffee raus in die Weinberge und habe den Blick über Hunawihr in Richtung Schwarzwald gemalt. Da ich die anderen mit dem Frühstück nicht warten lassen wollte, habe ich mich so richtig beeilt und das Bild in 40 Minuten geschafft :-)

Ich glaube ohne diesen Zeitdruck hätte ich es niemals so schön locker lassen können....

The next morning I was woken up by the sun shining into my bed room: I then went to the vineyards before coffee and painted the view over Hunawihr towards the Black Forest. Since I didn't want to keep the others waiting with breakfast, I really hurried and finished the painting in 40 minutes :-)

I think without this time pressure I would never have been able to let it go so loose and painterly....

Elsass – Bauernhof

Weil es dort oben so schön war, haben wir dort oben alle gleich noch ein 2. Bild gemalt.

... und bestimmt hätten wir auch noch ein 3. angefangen, wenn es nicht plötzlich so windig und stürmisch wurde, dass wir unsere Staffeleien beim Beenden des Bildes schon richtig festhalten mussten...!

 

Because it was so beautiful up there, we all painted a 2nd painting at the same time.

... and surely we would have started a 3rd one, too, if it hadn't suddenly become so windy and stormy that we had to hold our easels properly while finishing the painting...!

Elsass – Vogesen

Und endlich, am 3. Tag kam dann die Sonne raus!

Wir fuhren ganz nach oben auf den Col de Fréland und malten den Blick in die Weite. Als ich anfing, hingen die Wolken noch tief in den Bergen.

Auf der Zielgerade entschied ich mich dann noch den, wie immer so malerischen, Alfons mit ins Bild zu malen – dadurch wurde das Bild schlagartig sehr romanisch, oder?

And finally, on the 3rd day, the sun came out!

We drove all the way up to the Col de Fréland and painted the view into the distance. When I started, the clouds were still hanging low in the mountains.

On the home stretch, I decided to add Alfons, who is always so picturesque, to the painting - this suddenly made the painting very romantic, didn't it?

Elsass - im Wald

Immer noch Regen - wir sind dann in den Wald gestapft, in der Hoffnung, dass die Bäume den Regen ein bisschen abhalten - und wir ein nicht so graues Motiv finden.

Es war sehr dunkel dort, was ich wohl ganz gut eingefangen habe :-)

Mein Bildanfang war wieder einmal sehr schön locker... Auch wenn ich nicht wirklich frickelig wurde, wirkt mein fertiges Bild  im Gegensatz dazu nun irgendwie zu voll.

Dieser Anfang hat eine ganz anderer malerische Qualität, war in meine Augen aber zu unfertig und dadurch zu hell. Irgendwo zwischen diesem Stadium und dem fertigen Bild war es wohl genau gut :-)

... im dunklen Wald

Still raining - we then trudged into the forest, hoping that the trees would keep the rain off a bit - and we would find a not so grey subject.

It was very dark there, which I think I captured quite well :-)

My start of the painting was once again very nice and loose.... Even though I didn't really get fiddly, my finished picture now seems somehow too full in contrast.

This beginning has a very different painterly quality, but in my eyes it was too unfinished and therefore too bright. Somewhere between this stage and the finished picture it was probably just fine :-)

Elsass – Hunawihr

Das ist die Kirche über Hunawihr. 

Das Motiv zu malen war eher eine Übersprungshandlung als eine bewußte Entscheidung, da es immer wieder so stark regnete, dass wir uns nicht weit vom Haus weg trauten - und in der Nähe keinen anderen Blick fanden (von dem wir dachten, dass er einfach und schnell zu malen wäre)

Es wirkt deshalb wohl auch ein bisschen lieblos hingehudelt - und wird sehr wahrscheinlich mal wieder übermalt (upcycling!)

This is the church above Hunawihr. 

Painting this motif was more an act of skipping than a conscious decision, as it kept raining so hard that we didn't dare go far from the house - and we couldn't find another view nearby (which we thought would be easy and quick to paint).

That's why it seems a bit loveless - and will probably be painted over again (upcycling!).

Elsass– Scheune

 

Dieses Motiv haben wir gewählt wegen der hell-dunkel Kontraste. Das ist schwierig bei solchen Grau-in-Grau Tagen zu malen, wenn alles flach ausgeleuchtet ist, so daß das Auge sich nirgendwo festhalten kann.

Wie den ganzen Tag schon regnete es immer wieder und war recht trüb - ich war wirklich sehr froh über meinen riesigen so lichtdurchlässigen Regenschirm!

We chose this motif because of the contrasts in values. This is difficult to paint on such grey-on-grey days when everything is flatly lit so that the eye has nowhere to hold on to.

As it had been all day, it kept raining - I was really glad of my huge transparent umbrella!

Elsass – Blick über die Weinberge

Es ist mal wieder so weit:

ich darf eine Woche lange mit meinen beiden Malfreunden Alfons Kiefer und Torsten Wolber malen malen malen! 

Dieses Jahr sind wir in den schönen Elsass gefahren, genau dort, wo wir bereits 2014 zusammen gemalt hatten (damals noch in anderer Besetzung)

Dies ist mein Warm-Up Bild oberhalb des Ortes Hunawihr, da ging es nur darum irgendwas zu malen, das Ergebnis war nicht wichtig :-) (was auch gut so war, sonst wäre ich von meinem Bild sehr enttäuscht gewesen :-))

Once again:

I get to spend a week painting with my two painting friends Alfons Kiefer and Torsten Wolber! 

This year we went to the beautiful Alsace, exactly where we had already painted together in 2014 (then still in a different line-up).

This is my warm-up painting above the village of Hunawihr, it was just about painting something, the result was not important :-) (which was a good thing, otherwise I would have been very disappointed with my painting :-))
