Engelskulptur Hauptfriedhof

 

Dieses Motiv war mal was ganz anderes: Zwar habe auf dem Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof schon öfter gemacht, aber noch nie einen Engel.

Den wollte ich unbedingt malen, weil er so einen schönen Glow im Licht hatte – da aber klar war, dass die Sonne wahrscheinlich so schnell wandert, dass der bald weg sein würde, musste ich mich mal wieder sehr beeilen.

 Ich habe deswegen den Engel zuerst angelegt (in die feuchte Ölfarbe der Untermalung geschabt) und das Licht auf dem Boden gemalt. So konnte ich den Hintergrund dann etwas entspannter angehen (der Schatten blieb ja relativ konstant).

This motif was something completely different: I had often painted at Frankfurt's main cemetery, but never an angel.

I really wanted to paint it because it had such a beautiful glow in the light—but since it was clear that the sun would probably move so quickly that it would soon be gone, I had to hurry once again.

So I started by sketching the angel (scraping it into the wet oil paint of the underpainting) and painting the light on the ground. That way, I could take a more relaxed approach to the background (the shadow remained relatively constant).

Der Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof ist einer meiner Lieblingsorte in der Stadt: heute habe ich es endlich wieder geschafft, dort zu malen.

Das Bild sieht friedlicher aus, als es dort war: In der Nähe fand eine große Beerdigung statt (mit Event-Charakter, Live-Musik etc.), die mich staunen ließ, wie unterschiedlich Menschen Abschied nehmen...

 Frankfurt's main cemetery is one of my favourite places in the city: I finally managed to paint there again today.

The painting looks more peaceful than it was there: a large funeral was taking place nearby (with event character, live music etc.), which made me marvel at how differently people say goodbye...

Platane auf dem Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof

 

Diese wunderschöne alte Platane steht auf dem Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof, der ganz viele solche Baumriesen hat. Ich habe im Baumkataster der Stadt nachgeguckt: sie ist tatsächlich 149 Jahre alt!

So richtig habe ich das Motiv noch nicht für mich geknackt, ich habe mir vorgenommen auf jeden Fall noch mal eine Platane zu malen...

This beautiful old plane tree stands in Frankfurt's main cemetery, which has quite a few such giant trees. I looked in the tree cadastre of the city: it is actually 149 years old!

I do not hcaptured the motif as I wanted to, I'm sure I will paint again a plane tree...

Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof Ölskizzen

Seit Corona verbringe ich viel Zeit auf dem Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof – hier ist nie viel los, und er ist so weitläufig, dass ich jedes mal noch was Neues entdecke... Nur gemalt habe ich dort bisher noch nicht.

Deswegen habe ich jetzt einen ganzen Nachmittag dort verbracht und viele kleine Pochades (Ölskizzen) gemalt. Das Wetter hatte über Sonne bis regen und sogar Hagel alles im Angebot, aber mit meinem Schirm bin ich ganz gut gerüstet (außer beim Hagel, da musste ich mir ein Dach suchen).

Das hat so viel Spaß gemacht, dass ich gar nicht gemerkt habe, dass es das erste mal war, dass ich acht Motive am Stück gemalt habe....

Since Corona I spend a lot of time at Frankfurt's main cemetery - there's never much going on here, and it's so spacious that I discover something new every time... Only I have not painted there yet.

That's why I spent a whole afternoon there and painted many small pochades (oil sketches). The weather had everything on offer from sun to rain and even hail, but with my umbrella I am quite well equipped (except for the hail, I had to look for a roof).

This was so much fun that I have not even noticed that it was the first time that I have painted eight motifs at a time....
