We were greeted by fog this morning – such a beautiful atmosphere! I headed down to the foreshore straight after my coffee.

I love painting scenes like this in the fog – and they make for a wonderful exercise in values.

Just as I was nearly finished with the painting, a wedding couple arrived to have their photos taken on the beach:

It was the perfect opportunity to paint the three of them straight into the scene (the white dress immediately gave the whole thing a mystical feel).

The photo of me was taken by our friendly neighbour, who was kind enough to send it to me.

Pfälzer Wald im Nebel

 Forest Fog pleinair painting

After only half a day of sunshine, the weather is just like it has been all the year until now: cloudy and grey. Fortunately, it is warmer now, so I have finally painted these beautifully aesthetic shades of grey in the mist.

Oxforshire – Windmillhill

windmill hill painting pleinair

We have now left London and are visiting friends near Oxford.

We arrived late in the evening – and this was the view of the area that I saw for the first time when I woke up in the morning light: I just had to paint it straight away!

On one of the first really warm days of spring, I painted this view from the Bad Dürkheim flag tower to the Palatinate Forest.

Actually, I only wanted to paint the first blooming bush that I found, but then I liked this mist hanging between the hills so much that the bush became a sideshow.

This morning in the forest was particularly atmospheric - I had to hurry, because the fog quickly disappeared with the rising sun.

This is one of the motifs that I've looked at many times and for a long time, always thinking that I should paint it... and today I finally did it. Almost always, when I finally paint such pictures, they just flow out of my brush - which is probably because I had already painted them in my mind when I looked at them and now I just have to recreate them.

I love painting fog: not only because of the beautiful atmosphere, but it's also a particularly good exercise to judge tonal values.

Besides, it is usually quite quick: the fog is a master at simplifying motifs.

Another foggy day in the forest - the colors became very soft and milky.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to save the beautiful beginning of the painting with the simplified trees in the haze until the end, it only partially shimmers through in the background.

But I have captured the mood.

And off I go to the next Artistravel workshop: this time I'm not on an island but in the beautiful Allgäu region.
I was greeted there with very cool and cloudy weather: not cozy, but a very atmospheric mood with the fog. So on the way from the studio to the inn I decided to quickly grab my painting kit and paint an arrival painting.

Bretgane – Regendunst

Almost the same time as yesterday, but a completely different atmosphere:
The rain dulled all the colours and contrasts.
I found shelter under the rocks and didn’t even need an umbrella.

Thankfully, my husband patiently modelled for me in the rain, so I had a scale to show the proportions.

Even in rainy weather, Brittany (in my opinion) has particularly beautiful colours. I find the staggering of the rocks in the hazy air particularly attractive.

On the way to buy materials at Boesner, I thought that the fog that has been hanging over Frankfurt for days would also be quite a nice motif. I completely underestimated how cool this damp air is... brrrrrrr.

The last day then started with rain - which is why we took shelter under a bridge.

I wanted to try something completely different, stay simpler and more two-dimensional, which was a good idea in the mist ... but I'm not at all happy with the result of this experiment.

Too sad about the beautiful motif :-(

Pleinair Artretreat Ardennen - RochehautLa Pointe de Vue (Frahan)

And then the fog lifted and we had a great view of the Semois valley, where it meanders around Frahan.
I had to be very restrained with the houses, not to paint them all individually as houses, but only to suggest them roughly ....

Pleinair Artretreat Ardennen - Rochehaut La Pointe de Non-Vue

The 4th day greeted us with fog again... we then drove up the mountain from above the fog - and saw almost nothing there for the first time :-)

I then painted the almost nothing - and now that I see the painting next to the photo, I realised that I could have painted even more pale, there are really only very fine nuances in the tonal values.

Pleinair Artretreat Ardennen - Brouillard matinal

The third day greeted us with very atmospheric morning fog.

While the others decided to start the day again at the bridge on the river, I painted the view from the terrace of our house to the bridge - and put the others on it as well.

Contis Plage - Regen-Wald

The summer took a break today - it has rained all day. I have then painted in front of the house the view of the beautiful pine forest opposite, and even got really wet under the roof! But still, of course, it was very comfortable not to stand outside without protection, as usually with rain paintings.

At least the sun tries to fight through the fog on the last day:
so the final painting of my trip to Brittany was at least no longer quite so pale and cool-gray.

gleiche Bucht, anderes Wetter

... doch noch einen Rest Titanweiß gefunden!

Since the fog light stubbornly holds, I can just paint the same motif from three days ago again: so much it changes through the haze.
With all the milkiness around me, I used up my titanium white in the last few days. I was very glad that I still found a tube with leftovers on the bottom of my backpack!

Bretagne – Boote in der Sonne... äh... im Nebel

Endlich wieder Sonne....!

Endlich Sonne!

Der Nebel kommt ....

.... und bleibt.

Finally sun again....!
... at least that's what I thought.
After I just started to paint the boats the fog came back.
Fortunately I had painted my main character very quickly first, because I still want to catch it during the tide, so I could then capture this "in-between world" between sun and fog.

But it is actually the most extreme form of plein air painting, when not only the wandering light, the boats turning in the water but also the changing water level and on top of it the rising fog constantly change the motif so much (and quickly).
