Pleinairmalerei Workshop im Pfälzer Wald

  

Das ist das Demobild meines Einzel-Workshops im Pfälzer Wald - es ist keine Zufall, dass es  dem zuletzt geposteten Bild ähnelt: Ich habe mit diesem Motiv sehr gut zeigen könne, wie man auf einer dunkelgrün grundierten Malplatte nur die hellen Farben setzt und so das Licht , dass durch die Bäume blitzt so richtig zum leuchten bringen kann. 

Das Bild von Johanna wurde super gut, ganz reduziert - und ihr ist gelungen wirklich nur das nötigste zu malen. Auch ihr Ölskizzen (Pochades) sind ganz wunderbar geworden: Vereinfachung vom feinsten! Mein Demoboard wurde nicht voll und ich habe zuhause noch 2 kleine Bilder ergänzt.

This is the demonstration painting from my one-to-one workshop in the Palatinate Forest – it’s no coincidence that it resembles the most recently posted picture: this subject allowed me to demonstrate very effectively how, on a painting board primed with dark green, you can apply only the light colours and thus really bring out the light that flashes through the trees. 

Johanna’s painting turned out brilliantly, very minimalist –and she managed to paint only what was absolutely essential, only that was needed. Her oil sketches (pochades) also turned out wonderfully: simplification at its finest! My demonstration board didn’t end up completely full, so I added two more small paintings at home.

Zurück im Pfälzer Wald

 

Nachdem ich (bis auf den letzten Tag) 2 Wochen lang in der Bretagne gefroren habe, ist es zurück in Deutschland super heiß - und ich bin total froh, dass ich mich in Wöad flüchten kann, hier ist es einigermaßen haushaltbar.

Trotzdem habe ich mich nicht weit wegbewegt, um jede Anstrengung zu vermeiden und habe den Blick in unsere "Nachbarschaft" gemalt.

Dieses Bild habe ich ohne Brille gemalt: Da ich kurzsichtig bin, sah ich nur die ganzen Grüntöne und habe die ganzen Details im Wald ignorieren können. Das Bild ist dadurch schön "blockig" geworden, wie ich find. 

Ich zeige hier auch mal die Zwischenstufen – das vorletzte Stadium hätte auch fast schon gereicht: es zeigt un erzählt alles, worum es mir bei diesem Motiv ging.

After freezing my butt off in Brittany for two weeks (except for the last day), it’s super hot back in Germany—and I’m so glad I can escape to the forest; it’s somewhat bearable here.

Still, I didn’t go very far to avoid any exertion and painted a view of our “neighborhood.”

I painted this one without my glasses: Since I’m nearsighted, I could only see all the shades of green and was able to ignore all the details in the forest. As a result, the painting turned out nicely “blocky,” in my opinion. 

I’m also showing the intermediate stages here—the penultimate stage would have almost been enough on its own: it shows and conveys everything that was important to me about this subject.

Rehbach bei Hassloch/Pfalz

 

Immerhin eine Tag konnte ich nutzen um endlich wieder zu malen:

Wir sind an den Rehbach nach Hassloch gefahren - eine wunderschöne Location, die ein Tipp eines Malerkollegens war.

Ich hoffe die frühlingliche leichte und warme Stimmung des Tages an diesem des Ortesfreidliche Ort kommt rüber....

At least I was able to take a day off to finally paint again:

We drove to the Rehbach in Hassloch—a beautiful spot that a fellow painter had recommended.

I hope the light, warm, spring-like atmosphere of the day at this idyllic location comes through....

Mandelblüte an der Michaelis Kapelle in Bad Dürkheim

 

Im späten Nachmittagslicht bin ich dann noch mal los und habe die Mandeblüte an der Michaeliskapelle gegenüber vom Wurtsmnarkt in Bad Dürkheim gemalt.

Ich konnte mich gar nicht entscheiden, was ich am schönsten fand: die Kapelle, die blühenden Mandelbäume,chen, oder wie wunderbar pittoresk die Passanten auf dem Weg aussahen....

Un das Licht wurde mit jeder Minute noch schöner – und war nur 5 Minuten, nach dem ich das letzte Foto von der Staffelei geknipst habe, weg.

In the late afternoon light, I went out again and painted the almond blossoms at St. Michaelis Cahpell opposite the Wurtsmnarkt in Bad Dürkheim.

I couldn't decide what I liked most: the chapel, the blossoming almond trees, or how wonderfully picturesque the passers-by looked on their way...

And the light grew even more beautiful with every passing minute—and was gone just five minutes after I snapped the last photo of the easel.

Frühlingsblumen im Bad Dürkheimer Kurpark

 

Letzte Woche noch wuchsen hier nur ein paar Krokusse  (oder ist die Mehrzahl Krokeen?),

und jetzt quillt die Wiese im Bad Dürkheimer Kurpark über von Osterglocken und Bluebells (und ein paar roten Irgendwassen).

Das Bild ist mir vor lautrer Blüten etwas entglitten – aber Spaß hast gemacht in diesem Blütenmeer zu baden :-)

Das war mein Ölbild Nummer 1500 (eintausenfünfhundert!!)

Last week, only a few crocuses were blooming here – and now the meadow in Bad Dürkheim's Kurgarten is overflowing with daffodils and bluebells (and a few red something-or-others).

The painting got a little out of hand with all the flowers—but it was fun to bathe in this sea of blossoms :-)

Mandelblüte in der Pfalz

Diesen Samstag habe ich es das erste mal geschafft beim Treffen von Pleinair Rheinland Pfalz dabei zu sein: Für die meisten war es der Start in die Pleinair Saison und ich genoß es sehr mit den anderen die beginnende Mandelblüte in Siebeldingen zu malen. 

Ich hoffe sehr, dass ich es dieses Jahr vielleicht noch mal zu einem dieser schönen Treffen schaffe!

 This Saturday, I managed to attend the Pleinair Rhineland-Palatinate meeting for the first time: for most people, it was the start of the plein air season, and I really enjoyed painting the early almond blossoms in Siebeldingen with the others.

I really hope that I'll be able to attend another one of these wonderful meetings this year!

Steinbruch

Dieses Bild zeigt den Kriemhilden Stuhl oberhalb von Bad Dürrkheim. Dieser 200 Jahre alte römische Steinbruch ist ein wirklich großartiges Motiv. Dort werde bestimmt noch mal malen!

Ich zögerte lange die Jungs reinzumalen, die dort in den Felsen kletterten. Als ich sie am Schluß doch noch ergänzte erkannte ich aber, wie wichtig die für das Bild sind: Nur so kann ich die unglaublichen Dimensionen dort zeigen.

 

Pfälzer Wald im Frühling

 

Schon wenige Tage nach dem Schnee ist es ganz mild und warm – und man spürt den Frühling.

Die Sonne schafft es (weiter oben) auch noch nachmittags über den Berg und so habe ich dieses Contre Jour Bild im Kiefernwald gemalt – mit wunderschönem Durchlicht in den kleinen Buchen, die wohl vergessen haben im Herbst ihr Laub anzuwerfen.

Just a few days after the snow, it is already quite mild and warm—and you can feel spring in the air.

The sun still manages to shine over the mountain (higher up) in the afternoon, so I painted this contre-jour picture in the pine forest—with beautiful light shining through the small beech trees, which seem to have forgotten to shed their leaves in autumn.

Kleines Eppental im Schnee

 

Ich habe es mir sehnlichst gewünscht – und wurde erhört:

Auf der Zielgeraden des Winters fiel über Nacht endlich Schnee im Eppental. Als ich wach wurde war der Schnee schon fast wieder weggetaut, ich bin deshalb noch vor dem Kaffee los und habe den tauenden Schnee im Regen gemalt.

Und damit habe ich ich meine 4 Jahreszeiten Serie des kleinen Eppentals komplett!

Mission competed!

I wished for it so much – and my wish was granted:

As winter drew to a close, snow finally fell overnight in Eppental. When I woke up, the snow had almost melted away, so I set off before I'd even had my coffee and painted the melting snow in the rain.

And with that, my series of the four seasons in little Eppental is complete!

Pfälzer Wald im Nebel

 

Nach nur einem halben Tag Sonnenschein ist das Wetter schon wieder so wie bisher das ganze Jahr war: bewölkt und grau. 

Glücklicherweise ist es mittlerweile etwas wärmer, sodass ich endlich auch mal diese wunderschön ästhetischen Grautöne gemalt habe.

After only half a day of sunshine, the weather is just like it has been all the year until now: cloudy and grey. Fortunately, it is warmer now, so I have finally painted these beautifully aesthetic shades of grey in the mist.
 

Baumwurzeln

 

Nach dem ich gleich morgens nach dem Kaffe das erste Bild gemalt habe, habe ich das schöne Wetter genutzt und bin gleich noch mal in den Wald um noch ein Bild zu malen. Leider ist die Sonne hinter den Wolken verschwunden, aber ich habe ein Motiv gefunden, das mich auch ohne Licht inspiriert hat.

Bei diesem Bild wollte ich weniger abbilden, was vor mir ist, sondern vor allem die Strukturen der Steine und Wurzeln auf dem Waldboden verstehen. Vielleicht ist es ein bisschen mit mir durchgegangen - aber ich bin sehr glücklich dass mir der Versuch gelungen ist.

After painting right in the morning after coffee, I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went back into the forest to paint another one. Unfortunately, the sun disappeared behind the clouds, but I found a motif that inspired me even without light.

With this painting, I wanted to depict less of what was in front of me and focus more on understanding the structures of the stones and roots on the forest floor. Perhaps I got a little carried away, but I am very happy that my attempt was successful.

Eppental im Morgenlicht

 

Nach gefühlt 2 Wochen mit nur Regen oder Nebel kam heute endlich die Sonne raus.

Ich habe gleich nach dem Kaffee mein Malzeug gepackt und den schönen Sonnen-Schatten Kontrast im kleinen Eppental gemalt. Die Sonne stieg sehr schnell - dass ich mich so beeilen musste verhinderte dass ich zu lange an meinem Bild malte und so blieb alles schön rough und locker.

After what felt like two weeks of nothing but rain or fog, the sun finally came out today.

Right after coffee, I packed my painting supplies and painted the beautiful contrast between sun and shade in the small Eppental valley. The sun rose very quickly, so I had to hurry, which prevented me from spending too much time on my painting, and everything remained nice and rough and loose.

Sonnenuntergang im Wald

Um diesen Sonnenuntergang zu erwischen, musste ich etwas den Hügel hoch... und kam der Geschwindigkeit, wie das schöne Licht verschwand kaum hinterher.

Ich malte das Bild dann im Dunkeln zu ende...

 To catch this sunset, I had to climb a little way up the hill... and could barely keep up with the speed at which the beautiful light was disappearing.

I then finished the painting in the dark...

Waldhütte

Nachdem die Sonne es fast 50 Tage nicht über den Berg geschafft hat, war heute Mittag der erste "Sonnenaufgang" - 30 Minuten später war sie auch schon wieder weg.

Aber: ab jetzt wird es von Tag zu Tag länger....!!!

After the sun hadn't made it over the mountain for almost 50 days, today at noon was the first ‘sunrise’ – 30 minutes later, it was already gone again.

But: from now on, it will get longer every day...!!!

 

Weihnachtsmarkt in Bad Dürkheim

 

Nachdem ich vor ein paar Jahren auf dem Frankfurter Weihnachtsmann gemalt habe, wollte ich das nie nie wieder tun: einfach viel zu viele Menschen, alles zu eng und zu laut.

Aber der Bad Dürkheimer Weihnachtsmarkt ist soviel gemütlicher und beschaulicher, dass ich`s doch noch mal gewagt habe: es war total schön, ich habe mich mit nur netten Passanten unterhalten und die Musik war von Live-Bläsern und auch richtig angenehm.

After painting at the Frankfurt Christmas market a few years ago, I never wanted to do it again: there were simply too many people, it was too crowded and too loud.

But the Christmas market in Bad Dürkheim is so much more cozy and tranquil that I decided to give it another try: it was absolutely wonderful, I chatted with only friendly passers-by, and the music was provided by live brass players and was really pleasant.

Baumwurzeln

An diesem trüben feuchten Tag wollte ich gar nicht erst weit weg sondern hab einfach geguckt, was ich direkt vor der Tür finde: je länger man so ein unspektakulären Motiv betrachtet, umso mehr schöne Details (vor allen in den Farbnuancen) fallen einem auf: ie wieder werde ich einfach so an diesem Baum vorbei gehen können.

Ich hoffe ich kann euch damit den Geruch nach feuchtem Laub und Erde vermitteln.

Dieses Bild sieht nur unter freiem Himmel so aus, wie ich es gemalt habe: die Farbwerte wirken im Haus viel zu dunkel und zu kontrastarm. Das passiert mir immer mal wieder: Obwohl ich seit über 12 Jahren draußen male, weiß ich noch immer nicht, wie ich dieses Problem lösen könnte - es einfach heller als ich es im Motiv vor mir sehe anzulegen – da kommen mir draußen beim Malen die Tonwerte alle "falsch" vor.

On this dull, damp day, I didn't want to go far, but simply looked at what I could find right outside my door: the longer you observe such an unspectacular motif, the more beautiful details (especially in the color nuances) you notice: I will never be able to walk past this tree again without seeing it in this way.

I hope I can convey the smell of damp leaves and earth to you.

This painting only looks the way I painted it when it's outdoors: indoors, the values appear much too dark and lack contrast. This happens to me every now and then: although I've been painting outdoors for over 12 years, I still don't know how to solve this problem—simply making it brighter than I perceive it in front of me—that’s nearly impossible when I'm painting outdoors, baucause all the values would seem “wrong” to me.

 

Nonnenfels bei Bad Dürkheim

 

Nun bin ich schon über 1 Jahr im wunderschönen Pfälzer Wald – doch dieses wunderschöne Motiv in der Nachbarschaft hab ich jetzt erst entdeckt: der Nonnenfelsen.

Den werd ich bestimmt wieder malen: ein großartige Location (und noch dazu in angenehmer Rad Entfernung).

I've been living in the beautiful Palatinate Forest for over a year now, but I've only just discovered this wonderful motif in the neighborhood: the Nonnenfelsen (Nuns' Rock).

I'll definitely paint it again: it's a great location (and within easy cycling distance).

Birken in der Wintersonne

 

Keine Ahnung, was mich geritten hat an dem bisher kältesten Tag des Winters mit meinem Malzeug loszuziehen... ach doch: ich weiß es wieder:

Es ist das wunderschöne Licht der flachstehenden Sonne und die tolle Farbigkeit des Raureifs.

I have no idea what possessed me to set off with my painting equipment on the coldest day of winter so far... oh yes, I remember again:

it's the beautiful light of the low sun and the amazing colors of the hoarfrost.

Herbstspiegelung

Bevor alle Blätter fallen, habe ich noch mal am Schlangenweiher gemalt.

Ich werde die Herbstfarben vermissen ... freu mich aber auch schon auf die Grau und Brauntöne der Natur im Winterschlaf... und vielleicht gibt's diesen Winter ja sogar Schnee?!

Dieses Motiv dient auch als Vorlage für einen Live Maldemo Test: ich habe vor über den Winter (ab Januar bis April) über Zoom Live Maldemos zu machen. Wer Interesse daran hat, kann mir gerne jetzt schon eine Mail schicke, dann schicke ich die Infos dazu rechtzeitig per Mail.

kleine Vorab-Pochade

Before all the leaves fall, I painted at the Schlangenweiher again.

I will miss the autumn colours... but I am also looking forward to the grey and brown tones of nature in hibernation... and maybe there will even be snow this winter?!

Weinberge im Herbst

 

Und weil es so schön dort oben in der Sonne war hab ich im Anschluß gleich noch ein 2 Bild gemalt, der Blick schließt fast bündig rechts an.

Mit der Komposition hab ich bis zum Schluß gekämpft – und dann auf der Zielgeraden doch noch die Reben im Vordergrund reingemalt: das hat das Motiv gerettet.

Da war die Sonne dann aber schon weg und es wurde plötzlich ganz schön kühl ...

And because it was so beautiful up there in the sun, I painted another one right after that, with the view almost straight to the right.

I struggled with the composition until the very end – and then, in the final stretch, I painted the vines in the foreground after all: that solved the problem.

But by then the sun had already disappeared and it suddenly became quite cool...
