Und dann war mein England Trip auch schon wieder rum.

Das ist die Übersicht aller Bilder, die ich in der Woche auf der Insel gemalt habe.

Es waren sehr aufregende und schöne Tage: Ich habe mich in die Freundlichkeit der Briten und die wunderschöne Landschaft verliebt und mich an total neue Motive gewagt... unvergesslich.

ich werde auf jeden Fall wieder kommen!

Bis auf 2 (Themse und Radcliff Camera) sind alle Bilder noch verfügbar (fast: der Pub ist auch schon  reserviert). 

This is an overview of all the paintings I did during my week in England.

It was a very exciting and wonderful time: I fell in love with the friendliness of the British people and the beautiful landscape, and ventured into completely new motifs... unforgettable.

I will definitely be back!

Except for two (Thames and Radcliffe Camera), all paintings are still available (almost: the pub has already been reserved). 

Oxfordshire – Gate

Dieses schöne Tor hatte ich schon bei unserem ersten Spaziergang dort entdeckt – und ich konnte nicht abreisen ohne das auch noch gemalt zu haben.

Ich hatte es ein paar Tage zuvor schon mal mit meiner Freundin zusammen gezeichnet (mixed Media), das hat mich irgendwie inspiriert das etwas freier als sonst zu malen, mich noch mehr auf das Wesentliche zu konzentrieren...

Gar nicht mal so doof mal was anderes auszuprobieren :-)

I had already spotted this beautiful gate during our first walk there – and I couldn't leave without painting it.

I had already sketched it a few days earlier with my girlfriend (mixed media), which somehow inspired me to paint a little more freely than usual, to focus even more on the essentials...

It's not such a bad idea to try something different :-)

 

Oxfordshire – Gewächshaus

 

Dieses wunderschöne Gewächshaus steht im Garten meiner Freundin: für mich auch ein absolut britisches Motiv.

Die Sonne wanderte erstaunlich langsam: so konnte ich ganz entspannt das schöne Licht-Schattenspiel des Spätsommermorgens einfangen.

Hach: so einen sonnigen Garten mit Gewächshaus hätte ich auch gerne... das wär was!

This beautiful greenhouse stands in my friend's garden: for me, it's also a quintessentially British motif.

The sun moved surprisingly slowly, allowing me to relax and capture the beautiful play of light and shadow on this late summer morning.

Oh, how I would love to have such a sunny garden with a greenhouse... that would be really something!

Oxford – Iffley Lock

Ich bin wieder zurück an der Themse, dieses mal aber in Oxford  – an der Iffley Schleuse.

Am interessantesten fand ich die Spiegelung; den ganzen Rest hab ich eigentlich nur als Kulisse gemalt.

I'm back on the Thames again, but this time in Oxford – at Iffley Lock.

I found the reflection most interesting; I actually painted everything else just as a background.

 

Oxforshire – Windmillhill

Und wieder musste ich den Blick vom Haus meiner Freunde malen: das Licht war einfach zu und zu schön!

Ich glaube ich könnte das Motiv 100 mal malen und es würden kein 2 gleichen Bilder bei herauskommen. Schon in der nur kurzen Zeit ich ich dort war, habe ich soviel verschiedenene Licht-und Farbstimmungen gesehen: unfassbar!

Once again, I had to paint the view from my friends' house: the light was simply too beautiful!

I think I could paint this motif 100 times and no two paintings would be the same. Even in the short time I was there, I saw so many different light and colour moods: incredible!

 

Oxford – Radcliff Camera

 

Nachmittags waren wir alle zusammen in Oxford, und während die anderen Sightsseing machet, malte ich die Radcliffe Camera, über die ich nun alles weiß: währen ich dort malte habe ich ungefähr 100 Führungen gehört - in allen Sprachen.

Kurz zusammengefasst: das ist einer der Bibliotheken der Unis dort, und Camera leitet sich vom Wort Kammer ab, und hat nix mit einer Kamera zu tun.

Das Motiv hätte ich mir selbst jetzt nicht unbedingt selbst ausgesucht, es ist doch ziemlich komplex, aber meine Freunde hatten es sich als Wunsch Motiv ausgesucht – und jetzt bin ich froh, dass ich's getan hab. Wieder so einiges gelernt.

In the afternoon, we were all together in Oxford, and while the others were sightseeing, I painted the Radcliffe Camera, about which I now know everything: while I was painting there, I heard about 100 guided tours – in all languages.

In short: it is one of the university libraries there, and Camera is derived from the word chamber and has nothing to do with a camera.

I wouldn't have picked this subject myself, as it's pretty complex, but my friends had chosen it as their favourite subject – and now I'm glad I did it. Learned a lot again.

Oxforshire – Windmillhill

Mittlerweile sind wir aus London weg und besuchen Freunde in der Nähe von Oxford.

Wir kamen spät abends an – und das war der Blick über die Gegend, den ich nach dem Aufwachen im Morgenlicht das erste mal sah: den musste ich einfach sofort malen!

Gegenüber, ganz klein, kann man die Windmühle erkennen, die dem Hügel seinen Namen gab.

We have now left London and are visiting friends near Oxford.

We arrived late in the evening – and this was the view of the area that I saw for the first time when I woke up in the morning light: I just had to paint it straight away!

 

London – Themse

Am nächsten Tag bin ich an die Themse geradelt zum Malen: 

Das war wahrscheinlich eine Schnaps Idee den Westminster Palace nur mal eben schnell als Hintergrund zu malen ...

Aber mir gefiel dieses kleine Bootshaus mit Anleger und der Gangway so gut...!

Ich war sehr erstaunt, dass in London, so weit weg vom Meer, die Gezeiten so stark spürbar sind:

In den 2 Stunden, die ich malte, sank das Wasser rapide: die Gangway war zu Beginn noch waagerecht, und das Haus überlappte das gegenüberliegende Ufer noch deutlich – ich dachte erst ich hab nur nicht richtig geguckt :-)

Die Frabe der Themse entspricht tatsächlich exakt dem grünlichem Grauton meines Paletten-Schmuddels: das sind Farbreste, die ich in den letzten Wochen/Monaten auf meinen Reisen gesammelt habe. In der Farbe der Themse ist also Strandfarbe, Waldfarbe; Allgäufarbe, Bretgagnefarbe, Amrumfarbe und noch mehr...

Dieses Bild wurde mir übrigens noch von der Staffelei weg gekauft (naja fast: ich habe es noch mit heimgenommen, um es zu firnissen – ein feuchtes Ölbild kann man eben nicht einfach so einpacken und mitgeben. Schade, jetzt muss ich erst noch aufwändig in die USA schicken.

Palleten-Schmuddel

The next day, I cycled to the Thames to paint: 

It was probably a silly idea to paint Westminster Palace as a background just like a quick sketch...But I liked this little boathouse with its pier and gangway so much...!

I was very surprised that in London, so far from the sea, the tides are so noticeable:

In the two hours that I was painting, the water sank rapidly: at the beginning, the gangway was still horizontal, and the house clearly overlapped the opposite bank – at first I thought I just hadn't looked properly :-)

The colour of the Thames actually corresponds exactly to the greenish grey tone of my palette smudges: these are paint leftovers that I have collected during my travels over the last few weeks/months. So the colour of the Thames is the colour of the beach, the colour of the forest; the colour of the Allgäu, the colour of Brittany, the colour of Amrum and more...

Incidentally, this painting was bought off my easel (well, almost: I took it home with me to varnish it) – you can't just pack up a wet oil painting and send it off. It's a shame, now I have to go to the trouble of sending it to the USA.

 

London – Salisbury Pub

Um mir die Wartezeit bis zur Ausstellungseröffnung der Royal Society of Marine Artists (s. vorigen Post) zu verkürzen, bin ich mit meinem Malzeug los und hab in der Nähe ein Motiv gesucht, das ich nur in London malen kann: in Covent Garden bin ich fündig geworden.

Das ist der Salibsury Pub, eröffnet 1899.

Ich hab mich vielleicht ein bisschen übernommen mit diesem Motiv, ich habe ewig gemalt (fast 3 Stunden), aber irgendwann hatte ich's dann doch fertig.

Spaß hat's auf jeden Fall gemacht: ich war weit raus aus meiner Comfortszone, dafür habe ich ein (für mich) typisches London Motiv gemalt.

To pass the time until the opening of the Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition (see previous post), I took my painting stuff and went out to find a subject nearby that I could only paint in London: I found it in Covent Garden.

This is the Salisbury Pub, which opened in 1899.

I may have bitten off more than I could chew with this subject, as I painted for ages (almost three hours), but I finally finished it.

It was definitely fun: I was way out of my comfort zone, but I painted a subject that is (for me) typical of London.
