Ostsee Pleinair Festival – Kutter Anna Lena in Hafen von Kühlungsborn

  

Am Donnertag war der erste Tag des freien Malens des Ostsee Pleinair Festivals – den ich mit den anderen Maler*innen, die ich jedes jähr dort treffe, im Hafen von Kühlungsborn verbracht habe.

ich habe dieses Motiv gewählt, weil ich die Lücke zischen dem Kutter und dem Pier so interessant fand (und es am Tag zuvor bei einem anderen Maler entdeckt hatte) und total unterschätzt, wie lange ich dann an dem drum rum (dem Boot) malen musste.

Deswegen habe ich an diesem Tag nur ein Bild gemalt ...

Ich aber froh, mich mit diesem komplexen Motiv aus meine Komfortzone gewagt zu haben.

Thursday was the first day of open painting at the Baltic Sea Plein Air Festival—which I spent in the harbor of Kühlungsborn with the other artists I meet there every year.

I chose this subject because I found the gap between the cutter and the pier so interesting (and had spotted it the day before while watching another painter) and totally underestimated how long it would take me to paint the surrounding area (the boat).

That’s why I only painted one picture that day...

But I’m glad I ventured out of my comfort zone with this complex subject.

Segelclub Otterstadt

Diese Boote liegen im Hafen des  Otterstädter Segelclubs am Rhein (auf Höhe der Leberwurstinsel - cooler Name, oder?).

Ich war total geflashed von den brillianten Farben in der gleißenden Sonne - das bin ich aus dem Wald gar nicht mehr gewohnt …

Dieses Motiv ist eine schöne Einstimmung für mich: nächste Woche bin ich beim Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn und werde bestimmt noch mal Boote malen. Ich freu mich schon …!

These boats are moored in the harbor of the Otterstadt Sailing Club on the Rhine (near Leberwurst Island—cool name, right?).

I was totally blown away by the brilliant colors in the glistening sun—I’m not used to that at all coming from the forest…

This scene is a nice way to get me in the mood: next week I’ll be at the Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn and will definitely be painting boats again. I’m really looking forward to it…!

Rehbach bei Hassloch/Pfalz

 

Immerhin eine Tag konnte ich nutzen um endlich wieder zu malen:

Wir sind an den Rehbach nach Hassloch gefahren - eine wunderschöne Location, die ein Tipp eines Malerkollegens war.

Ich hoffe die frühlingliche leichte und warme Stimmung des Tages an diesem des Ortesfreidliche Ort kommt rüber....

At least I was able to take a day off to finally paint again:

We drove to the Rehbach in Hassloch—a beautiful spot that a fellow painter had recommended.

I hope the light, warm, spring-like atmosphere of the day at this idyllic location comes through....

Rheinufer bei Eltville im Sonnenuntergang

 

Gestern habe ich eine Kurztrip nach Eltville am Rhein gemacht:

Als ich mit dem Bild anfing, waren die Farben ganz soft und zurückgenommen: Genauso wollte ich mein Bild malen.

Doch mit jeder Minute wurde das Licht spektakulärer und die Farben gesättigter und leuchtender...

Ich habe dem Sonnenuntergang dann hinterher gemacht, bin überall immer wieder drüber um auch auf meinem Bild gesättigter zu werden - und wäre die Sonne dann nicht untergegangen, würde ich da wohl jetzt noch stehen und malen :-)

Licht am Anfang

Yesterday, I took a short trip to Eltville am Rhein:

When I started the painting, the colors were very soft and subdued: that's exactly how I wanted to do my painting.

But with every minute that passed, the light became more spectacular and the colors more saturated and vibrant...

I then followed the sunset, repeatedly going over the entire painting with my brush to make it more saturated—and if the sun hadn't set, I would probably still be standing there painting :-)

Schilf in der Wintersonne

Heute kam die Sonne noch mal raus – und wärmte tatsächlich schon ein bisschen (wobei der See noch immer eine dünne Eisschicht hat).

Dieses Bild malte ich begleitet vom Gurgeln des Überlaufs und dem Rascheln des Schilfs... ich hab mich sehr wohl gefühlt: wahrscheinlich hab ich deshalb etwas länger als sonst (und deswegen auch detaillierter) gemalt.

Today, the sun came out again – and actually warmed things up a little (although the lake still has a thin layer of ice on it).

I painted this one accompanied by the gurgling of the overflow and the rustling of the reeds... I felt very comfortable: that's probably why I painted a little longer than usual (and therefore in more detail).

Herbstspiegelung

Bevor alle Blätter fallen, habe ich noch mal am Schlangenweiher gemalt.

Ich werde die Herbstfarben vermissen ... freu mich aber auch schon auf die Grau und Brauntöne der Natur im Winterschlaf... und vielleicht gibt's diesen Winter ja sogar Schnee?!

Dieses Motiv dient auch als Vorlage für einen Live Maldemo Test: ich habe vor über den Winter (ab Januar bis April) über Zoom Live Maldemos zu machen. Wer Interesse daran hat, kann mir gerne jetzt schon eine Mail schicke, dann schicke ich die Infos dazu rechtzeitig per Mail.

kleine Vorab-Pochade

Before all the leaves fall, I painted at the Schlangenweiher again.

I will miss the autumn colours... but I am also looking forward to the grey and brown tones of nature in hibernation... and maybe there will even be snow this winter?!

Art Retreat Vogesen – Tag 5

Weil es dort so schön war, sind wir nach vom "lost Place" wieder zurück in den Wald an den Wasserfall gefahren: Dieses mal haben wir aber am Bachlauf oberhalb davon gemalt.

Da Alfons sich so schön vor mir positioniert hatte, beschloß ich ihn zu malen - in seiner ganz typischen Arbeitshaltung. Er stand im einzigen Lichtfleck dort im Wald, ich habe ihn also noch mal extra erleuchtet :-)

Because it was so beautiful there, we drove back from the ‘lost place’ to the forest by the waterfall: This time, however, we painted by the stream above it.

Since Alfons had positioned himself so nicely in front of me, I decided to paint him – in his typical working posture. He was standing in the only patch of light in the forest, so I illuminated him even more :-)

Art Retreat Vogesen – Tag 3

 

Nach den beiden Morgenbildern sind wir in den nahen Wald gefahren und haben dort die Cascade de Faymont gemalt.

Dieser Wasserfall war wie für uns gemacht:

Man konnte wunderbar genau dort die Staffelei aufbauen, wo man den besten Blick hatte, ohne daß wir uns gegenseitig im Weg waren.

Mein Bild bekam durch den kleinen Baum irgendwie was japanisches ....

After painting the two morning pieces, we drove to the nearby forest and painted the Cascade de Faymont.

This waterfall was perfect for us:

we were able to set up our easels in exactly the right spot to get the best view without getting in each other's way.

The small tree somehow gave my painting a Japanese feel....

Art Retreat Vogesen – Tag 2

 

Den 2. Tag unseres Pleinair Artretreats haben wir am nahegelegenen See begonnen.

Wieder habe ich vorab ein kleine Ölskizze gemalt: die zeigt einmal mehr, wie wenig es braucht um die Stimmung eines Ortes einzufangen.

Das Bild ist in den Vogesen geblieben: Es hat bei unserem sehr netten Vermieter ein neues Zuhause gefunden.

We began the second day of our plein air art retreat at the nearby lake.

Once again, I painted a small oil sketch beforehand: it shows once more how little it takes to capture the atmosphere of a place.

The painting was kept in the Vosges: it found a new home with our very nice host.

Oxford – Iffley Lock

Ich bin wieder zurück an der Themse, dieses mal aber in Oxford  – an der Iffley Schleuse.

Am interessantesten fand ich die Spiegelung; den ganzen Rest hab ich eigentlich nur als Kulisse gemalt.

I'm back on the Thames again, but this time in Oxford – at Iffley Lock.

I found the reflection most interesting; I actually painted everything else just as a background.

 

London – Themse

Am nächsten Tag bin ich an die Themse geradelt zum Malen: 

Das war wahrscheinlich eine Schnaps Idee den Westminster Palace nur mal eben schnell als Hintergrund zu malen ...

Aber mir gefiel dieses kleine Bootshaus mit Anleger und der Gangway so gut...!

Ich war sehr erstaunt, dass in London, so weit weg vom Meer, die Gezeiten so stark spürbar sind:

In den 2 Stunden, die ich malte, sank das Wasser rapide: die Gangway war zu Beginn noch waagerecht, und das Haus überlappte das gegenüberliegende Ufer noch deutlich – ich dachte erst ich hab nur nicht richtig geguckt :-)

Die Frabe der Themse entspricht tatsächlich exakt dem grünlichem Grauton meines Paletten-Schmuddels: das sind Farbreste, die ich in den letzten Wochen/Monaten auf meinen Reisen gesammelt habe. In der Farbe der Themse ist also Strandfarbe, Waldfarbe; Allgäufarbe, Bretgagnefarbe, Amrumfarbe und noch mehr...

Dieses Bild wurde mir übrigens noch von der Staffelei weg gekauft (naja fast: ich habe es noch mit heimgenommen, um es zu firnissen – ein feuchtes Ölbild kann man eben nicht einfach so einpacken und mitgeben. Schade, jetzt muss ich erst noch aufwändig in die USA schicken.

Palleten-Schmuddel

The next day, I cycled to the Thames to paint: 

It was probably a silly idea to paint Westminster Palace as a background just like a quick sketch...But I liked this little boathouse with its pier and gangway so much...!

I was very surprised that in London, so far from the sea, the tides are so noticeable:

In the two hours that I was painting, the water sank rapidly: at the beginning, the gangway was still horizontal, and the house clearly overlapped the opposite bank – at first I thought I just hadn't looked properly :-)

The colour of the Thames actually corresponds exactly to the greenish grey tone of my palette smudges: these are paint leftovers that I have collected during my travels over the last few weeks/months. So the colour of the Thames is the colour of the beach, the colour of the forest; the colour of the Allgäu, the colour of Brittany, the colour of Amrum and more...

Incidentally, this painting was bought off my easel (well, almost: I took it home with me to varnish it) – you can't just pack up a wet oil painting and send it off. It's a shame, now I have to go to the trouble of sending it to the USA.

 

Abendlicht am Ostparkweiher

Das ist das Bild, dass ich noch im Anschluß an den Workshop am Ostpark Weiher unbedingt malen musste:

Das Licht wurde immer immer schöner – und ich war zwar ein bisschen erschöpft, aber das Malzeug war ja schon da und es wäre eine Schande gewesen, dieses Hammer Licht nicht zu malen.

Ich hab ganz schnell und zügig gemalt, ca 40 Minuten, damit ich das Licht erwische (und ich auch  nicht noch länger stehen wollte). Das tat dem Bild ganz gut, daß ich einfach aufhörte, bevor ich zu viel malen konnte.

This is the painting I just had to do after the workshop at Ostpark Weiher:

The light was getting better and better – and although I was a bit tired, my painting stuff was already there and it would have been a shame not to paint this amazing light.

I painted very quickly, in about 40 minutes, so that I could capture the light (and also because I didn't want to stand there any longer). It was good for the painting that I stopped before I could paint too much.

 

Pleinairmalerei Workshop in Frankfurt

Hier sind ein paar Eindrücke eines 2 tägigigen Workshops, den ich in Frankfurt gegeben habe:

Ich hatte 2 sehr motivierte, und wie sich heraustellte richtig gute Schülern, eine ganz aus dem Norden, eine kam ganz aus dem Süden. wir drei hatten zusammen richtig viel Spaß.

Den ersten Tag verbrachten wir im Günthersburgpark (mit einen kurzem Regenschauer, deswegen in der Nähe eines Daches und nicht ganz so frei in der Motivwahl).

Der 2 Tag war fast schon schönes Wetter und wir malten zusammen am Ostparkweiher.

Wasser im Workshop zu malen ist toll für Anfänger: das Erfolgserlebnis ist fast schon garantiert, denn um Spiegelungen zu malen gibt es ganz einfache Tricks, die ich sehr gerne zeige - und eigentlich immer zum Erfolg führen.

Das wunderschöne Licht, das wir beim Abschlussfoto hatten, hat mich so begeistert, dass ich es im Anschluss an den Workshop sofort malen musste –> s. nächsten Post.

kleine Ölskizzen

Here are a few impressions from a two-day workshop I gave in Frankfurt:

I had two very motivated students who turned out to be really good, one from the north and one from the south. The three of us had a lot of fun together.

We spent the first day in Günthersburgpark (with a brief rain shower, so we stayed near a roof and weren't quite as free in our choice of motifs).

The weather was almost nice on the second day, and we painted together at Ostparkweiher.

Painting water in a workshop is great for beginners: success is almost guaranteed because there are some very simple tricks for painting reflections that I always enjoy showing—and they almost always lead to success.

Weserufer

Und weil es so schön war, sind wir auch am letzten Tag des Pleinairmalerei Workshops auf der Burg Herstelle noch mal runter an die Weser. Dieses mal sind wir auf unserer Seite geblieben und haben das gegenüberliegende Ufer gemalt.

Mit diesem Demobild aber ich gezeigt, wie simpel es ist die Spiegelung auf dem Wasser zu malen...

And because it was so beautiful, we went back down to the Weser River on the last day of the plein air painting workshop at Herstelle Castle. This time, we stayed on our side and painted the opposite bank. With this demo painting, I showed how easy it is to paint the reflection on the water.

Bretagne – Morgenlicht

Als ich dieses Bild malte, haute mein Motiv viel zu schnell ab. 

Zum Glück blieb der Sand noch lange genug nass, dass ich zumindest die Spiegelung noch sah….

When I was painting this one, my subject took off far too quickly. 

Fortunately, the sand stayed wet long enough for me to at least see the reflection....

Waldsee

 

Während ich dieses Bild malte, wanderten die Sonnenflecken im Schatten der Bäume über die Wasseroberfläche: dieses Leuchten auf dem Wasser wollte ich einfangen.

Dieser Fokus auf das Wasser half mir dann auch sehr, beim Wald im Hintergrund schön roeugh und unspezifisch zu bleiben.

While I was painting this scene, the sunspots were moving across the surface of the water in the shadows of the trees: I wanted to capture this glow on the water.

This focus on the water also helped me a lot to keep the forest in the background rough and unspecific.
