Bretagne Tag 13 – Felsen im Nebel

An diesem Morgen wurden wir vom Nebel begrüßt - so eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre! Ich bin dann gleich nach dem Kaffe runter in die Ebbe.

Solche Nebelbilder liebe ich zu malen – und sie sind eine ganz wunderbare Tonwert Übung.

Als ich mit dem Bild fast fertig war, kam ein Hochzeitspaar um sich am Strand fotografieren zu lassen:

Perfekt um die die drei gleich mit ins Motiv zu malen (durch das weiße Kleid bekam das ganze gleich was mystisches)

Das Foto von mir hat unser freundliche Hausnachbar gemacht und mir netterweise geschickt.

 We were greeted by fog this morning – such a beautiful atmosphere! I headed down to the foreshore straight after my coffee.

I love painting scenes like this in the fog – and they make for a wonderful exercise in values.

Just as I was nearly finished with the painting, a wedding couple arrived to have their photos taken on the beach:

It was the perfect opportunity to paint the three of them straight into the scene (the white dress immediately gave the whole thing a mystical feel).

The photo of me was taken by our friendly neighbour, who was kind enough to send it to me.

Bretagne Tag 12 – Blick zur Ile de Batz

 

Das ist der Blick in Richtung nach Osten (weil immer noch Westwind) – ganz lein sieht man hinten links die Ole de Batz. Eigentlich war es total bedeckt - aber ab und an blitze ein Sonnerenstrahl der noch niedrigen Morgensonne durch und glitzerte im Gegenlicht auf dem Wasser. Diesen Moment habe ich mit diesem Bild einfangen wollen.

Bei diesen Weitsichten über die Ebbe versuche ich immer Menschen zu ergänzen, als Masstab: Ohne die würden die Felsen wie Steine aussehen.

This is the view towards the east (as there’s still a westerly wind) – just about visible in the far left-hand corner is the Ole de Batz. It was actually completely overcast – but every now and then a ray of sunlight from the still-low morning sun would break through and glisten on the water against the light. I wanted to capture that moment in this painting.

    In these wide-angle shots at low tide, I always try to include people as a sense of scale: without them, the rocks would just look like stones

Bretgane Tag 9 – Felseninsel in der Ebbe

  

Dieses Bild malte ich gleich im Anschluss an den Blick in die Felsen. 

Zum einen kam die Sonne raus, zum anderen musste ich dann gar nicht erst los einen windgeschützen Platz zu suchen...

Und der Blick von da oben, gerade  mit der auslaufenden Ebbe war einfach zu schön.

Doch es istt unglaublich, wie schnell das Wasser verschwindet (und mit ihm mein Motiv: Die wunderschöne Spiegelung des Felsens im Wasser hatte meine Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen).

Obwohl ich für dieses Bild nur 30 Minuten gebraucht habe, war ich nicht schnell genug – ich musste mich größtenteils auf mein Gedächtnis verlassen.

Der Felsen heißt Roc'h ar Feuillans und ist am Plage des Amiets in Kerfissien:

Ich habe ihn schon sehr oft gemalt, aber meistens nur als Hintergrund.

I painted this rock island straight after the one with the view of the rocks. For one thing, the sun came out; for another, I didn’t even have to go looking for a sheltered spot...

And the view from up there, with the ebbing tide, was simply too beautiful.

But it’s incredible how quickly the water disappears (and with it my subject: the beautiful reflection of the rock in the water had caught my attention).

Although I only took 30 minutes to take this picture, I wasn’t quick enough – I had to rely largely on my memory.

Amrum – Nordspitze

  

Da wir den Kurs heute wegen der Wettervorhersage in den Nachmittag verlegten, habe ich den Vormittag genutzt und an der Nordspitze gemalt.

Ich stand auf einer Ebbe-Insel, die sehr sehr rasch schrumpfte – und ich dann durchs schon übers knietiefe Wasser zurückwaten musste. Unglaublich, wie schnell das Wasser dann doch immer kommt...!

Since we rescheduled today's course for the afternoon due to the weather forecast, I used the morning to paint at the nordspitze.

I stood on an ebbing island that was shrinking very, very quickly – and then I had to wade back through water that was already knee-deep. It's unbelievable how quickly the water always comes in...!

Bretagne – Ebbe

Das ist leider schon wieder das letzte Bild meiner diesjährigen Bretagne Reise –  ich weiß nicht, ob ich es jemals schaffe mit dem Gefühl zu abzufahren, daß ich alles, was ich wollte, gemalt habe.

Bis nächstes Jahr – ich freu mich jetzt schon!

Unfortunately, this is already the last painting from my trip to Brittany this year—I don't know if I'll ever leave with the feeling that I've painted everything I wanted to.

Bretagne – Ebbe Priele

Dieses Bild habe ich morgens in "unserer" Bucht bei Ebbe gemalt – und die Flut hätte ich beinahe überrascht: ich merkte wirklich erst, dass das Wasser kommt, als es bereits um meine Gummistiefel schwappte.

Ich musste das Bild dann auf dem trockenen fertig malen – und hatte dadurch nur noch den Strand und Haus vor mir, alle Priele und Felsen waren hinter mir und überschwemmt.

Die Gezeiten machen es einem echt nicht gerade leichter!

I painted this one in ‘our’ bay at low tide in the morning – and the tide almost caught me by surprise: I only really noticed the water coming in when it was already lapping around my wellies.

I then had to finish the painting on dry land – which meant I only had the beach and house in front of me, with all the tidal pools and rocks behind me and flooded.

The tides really don't make it any easier!

 

Bretagne – Felsen in der Ebbe

Die kurze Regenpause heute habe ich zum Malen genutzt:

Das Bild habe ich glaub dreimal gemalt: ich musste ständig die Tonwerte anpassen, das Licht hat sich minütlich geändert. Mal war das Meer heller, mal dunkler als der Himmel, die Felsen waren erst nur eine Silhouette, plötzlich hell, dann wieder dunkel.

Auch den Sand musste ich deutlich dunkler übermalen, da ssich onst die kleinen Priele, deren Wasser das helle Sonnenlicht reflektierten, nicht deutlich genug abhoben ...

Dieses mal eine sehr ineffiziente Malweise :-)

Vorab hatte ich eine ganz schnelle kleine Ölskizze gemalt, da war alles noch ganz simpel.

 

I used the short break in the rain today to paint:

I think I painted this piece three times: I had to constantly adjust the tonal values, the light changed by the minute. Sometimes the sea was lighter, sometimes darker than the sky, the rocks were just a silhouette at first, then suddenly bright, then dark again.

I also had to paint over the sand much darker, as the small tideways, whose water reflected the bright sunlight, did not stand out clearly enough ...

A very inefficient painting method this time :-)

I had painted a quick little oil sketch beforehand, so everything was still quite simple.

Flachbodenboot bei Ebbe auf Borkum

Ein weiteres After Work Bild – dieser alter Flachboden-Segler fiel bei Ebbe auf Grund und war ein wunderschönes Motiv. Wie so oft um diese Tageszeit: richtig schön wurde das Licht erst, als ich bereits fertig war, und ich muss mich dann jedes mal bremsen und nicht immer weiter dem Licht hinterher zu malen.

 Another after-work painting - this old flat-bottomed sailing boat fell aground at low tide and was a wonderful subject. As is so often the case at this time of day, the light became really beautiful when I was already finished, and I have to stop myself every time and not keep chasing the light.

Segelschule Nieblum bei Ebbe

Mit diesem Bild von der Segelschule in Nieblum bei Ebbe verabschiede mich von Föhr: gemalt habe ich es am letzten Abend meiner wunderschönen Pleinairmalerei Workshopwoche mit einer wirklich tollen Truppe.

With this painting of the sailing school in Nieblum at low tide I say goodbye to Föhr: I painted it on the last evening of my wonderful plein air painting workshop week with a really great group.

Bretagne – Ebbepool

Auch bei diesen Bild hat mich die Geschwindigkeit mit der die Flut kam überrascht (und vertrieben). Da ich sehr weit draußen in der Ebbe stand, war dann der Heimweg ein bisschen aufregend 🥴

Irgendwann muss ich dieses Motiv noch mal angehen: noch bin ich nicht zufrieden mit den Farben des Wassers…

The speed at which the tide came in also surprised me (and drove me away) while painting this one. As I was standing very far out in the low tide, the way home was a bit exciting 🥴

I'll have to tackle this motif again at some point: I'm still not satisfied with the colours of the water...

 

Bretagne – Boote bei Ebbe

Diese Boote bei Ebbe, mit den schönen Spiegelungen in den Pfützen wolle ich die ganze Zeit schon malen … und obwohl ich mich total beeilt habe, kam die Flut viel zu schnell, so dass ich das Bild (im Blindflug) in den Felsen beenden musste.

Einen Vorteil haben solche Flutbilder allerdings: ich male nicht zu lange dran (und mach sie dabei kaputt).

I wanted to paint these boats at low tide, with the beautiful reflections in the puddles, all the time ... and although I really hurried, the tide came in far too quickly, so I had to finish the picture (flying blind) in the rocks.

However, there is one advantage to flood paintings like this: I don't paint them for too long (and ruin them in the process).

Bei diesen Ebbebild musste ich mit meiner Staffelei dem Wasser immer weiter hinterher ziehen - aber besser als vor der reinkommenden Flut zurückweichen zu müssen …

With this low tide painting, I had to drag my easel further and further behind the water - but better than having to retreat before the incoming tide ...

 

Bretgane – Boot

Im Winter findet man hier in der Bretagne nur wenige Boote, die meisten sind in Sicherheit gebracht – dieses liegt in der Bucht von Port Neuf.

Für dieses Bild habe ich endlich die Ölfarben getestet, die mir freundlicherweise von Winsor&Newton zugeschickt wurden. Sie haben mir meine Lieblingspalette zusammengestellt, bestehend aus den 3 Grundfarben in warm und kalt, sowie Paynes grau und Vandyck braun.

Es war ein wenig ungewohnt, da einige Farben einen unterschiedlichen Pigmentgehalt haben, so dass ich zum Mischen von einigen Farben mehr und von anderen weniger brauchte als sonst.

Vielleicht macht die Qualität von Winton gegenüber Artist einen Unterschied?

Ich muss mich mit den Farben noch mehr vertraut machen – ich hoffe, dass man meine "Ups"-Momente im Ergebnis nicht so sehr sehen kann.

Winsor]Newton Ölfarben

Today I finally tested the oil paints that Winsor&Newton kindly sent to me. They put together my favourite palette for me, consisting of the 3 primary colours in warm and cold, as well as Paynes grey and Vandyck brown.

It was still a little unfamiliar, as some colours have a different pigment content, so I needed more of some colours and less of others than usual for mixing.

Perhaps the Winton versus Artist quality makes a difference?

I’ll have to familiarise myself with it more - but hopefully you can’t see my „oops moments“ in the result.

Bretagne – Morgensonne

  

Morgensonne über der Bucht von An Amied.

Das Wasser verschwand viel zu schnell und die Sonne stieg noch schneller, selbst die Wolken verzogen sich ... ich hab mein Motiv komplett verloren, deswegen wurde das Ergebnis wohl ein wenig expressionistischer als sonst.

... und dann war es weg.

The water disappeared far too quickly and the sun rose even faster, even the clouds dispersed ... the result became a little more expressive than usual.

Und wieder bestimmt die Suche nach einem windgeschützten Standort die Wahl meines Motivs.

Ich fing in der Sonne an, dann zog es aber leider wieder zu, was die schönen Farben sehr dämpfte. Dazu drehte sich der Wind auch noch und ich verlor meinen Windschutz 🥴.

Bretgane - Ebbe und Möwen

Dieses Bild habe ich auf meiner eigenen kleinen Privat-Insel bei Ebbe gemalt (eine meiner besseren Ideen an einem sonnigen Sonntag: ein guter Schutz vor neugierigen Besuchern).

Als das Wasser zurückging, verschwanden leider auch die Möwen.

I painted this one on my own little private island at low tide (one of my better ideas on a sunny Sunday: good protection from curious visitors).

Unfortunately, when the water receded, the seagulls disappeared too.

 

Bretagne – Strand bei Ebbe

Ein weiterer Tag fast ohne Wind, das musste ich sofort ausnutzen und stellte mich in die Mitte der Ebbe am Strand Les Amiets. vor allem, da ab heute Nacht Windgeschwindigkeiten bis 100 km/h angesagt wurden!

Another day with almost no wind, I had to take advantage of this immediately and stood in the middle of the low tide on Les Amiets beach, especially as wind speeds of up to 100 km/h were forecast for tonight!
