Stuhl vor Schatten an der Wand

Während dieser heißen Tage habe ich immer ganz entzückt beobachtet, wie wunderschön die Nachmittagssonne dieses Schattenspiel auf die Wand zaubert – also habe ich es endlich mal gemalt.

Ich musste es in zwei Sessions malen, viel zu schnell veränderte sich der Schatten. Ein echtes Kinoerlebnis, in hochauflösender Version.

Ein etwas ungewöhnliches Motiv für mich – aber sehr schön, mal etwas Neues auszuprobieren ....

During these hot days, I’ve always enjoyed watching how beautifully the afternoon sun casts this play of shadows on the wall – so I finally got myself to paint it.

I had to paint it in two sessions; the shadow changed far too quickly. A real cinematic experience, in high-definition.

A slightly unusual subject for me – but it’s lovely to try something new for a bit of a change....

Pleinairmalerei Workshop im Pfälzer Wald

  

Das ist das Demobild meines Einzel-Workshops im Pfälzer Wald - es ist keine Zufall, dass es  dem zuletzt geposteten Bild ähnelt: Ich habe mit diesem Motiv sehr gut zeigen könne, wie man auf einer dunkelgrün grundierten Malplatte nur die hellen Farben setzt und so das Licht , dass durch die Bäume blitzt so richtig zum leuchten bringen kann. 

Das Bild von Johanna wurde super gut, ganz reduziert - und ihr ist gelungen wirklich nur das nötigste zu malen. Auch ihr Ölskizzen (Pochades) sind ganz wunderbar geworden: Vereinfachung vom feinsten! Mein Demoboard wurde nicht voll und ich habe zuhause noch 2 kleine Bilder ergänzt.

This is the demonstration painting from my one-to-one workshop in the Palatinate Forest – it’s no coincidence that it resembles the most recently posted picture: this subject allowed me to demonstrate very effectively how, on a painting board primed with dark green, you can apply only the light colours and thus really bring out the light that flashes through the trees. 

Johanna’s painting turned out brilliantly, very minimalist –and she managed to paint only what was absolutely essential, only that was needed. Her oil sketches (pochades) also turned out wonderfully: simplification at its finest! My demonstration board didn’t end up completely full, so I added two more small paintings at home.

Zurück im Pfälzer Wald

 

Nachdem ich (bis auf den letzten Tag) 2 Wochen lang in der Bretagne gefroren habe, ist es zurück in Deutschland super heiß - und ich bin total froh, dass ich mich in Wöad flüchten kann, hier ist es einigermaßen haushaltbar.

Trotzdem habe ich mich nicht weit wegbewegt, um jede Anstrengung zu vermeiden und habe den Blick in unsere "Nachbarschaft" gemalt.

Dieses Bild habe ich ohne Brille gemalt: Da ich kurzsichtig bin, sah ich nur die ganzen Grüntöne und habe die ganzen Details im Wald ignorieren können. Das Bild ist dadurch schön "blockig" geworden, wie ich find. 

Ich zeige hier auch mal die Zwischenstufen – das vorletzte Stadium hätte auch fast schon gereicht: es zeigt un erzählt alles, worum es mir bei diesem Motiv ging.

After freezing my butt off in Brittany for two weeks (except for the last day), it’s super hot back in Germany—and I’m so glad I can escape to the forest; it’s somewhat bearable here.

Still, I didn’t go very far to avoid any exertion and painted a view of our “neighborhood.”

I painted this one without my glasses: Since I’m nearsighted, I could only see all the shades of green and was able to ignore all the details in the forest. As a result, the painting turned out nicely “blocky,” in my opinion. 

I’m also showing the intermediate stages here—the penultimate stage would have almost been enough on its own: it shows and conveys everything that was important to me about this subject.

Kleines Eppental (und Pferde) im Morgenlicht

Zurück im Pfälzer Wald habe ich das frühe Morgenlicht im Tal eingefangen. Ich hoffte sehr, dass die Pferde vorbeikommen würden, um zu sehen, was ich dort mache – und sie taten mir den Gefallen: also beschloss ich, sie in mein Bild zu malen.

Nachdem ich fertig war, unterhielt ich mich sehr schön mit den netten Besitzern des Grundstücks – sie gaben mir sogar die Erlaubnis, ihre Wiese zu betreten, wenn ich dort in Zukunft malen möchte. Darüber bin ich sehr glücklich, denn das ist der einzige Ort in meiner Nachbarschaft hier im Wald, an dem es im Winter (manchmal) Sonne gibt. 

Das Malen kann ein sehr schöner Türöffner sein – im wahrsten Sinner des Wortes: Danke!

Back in the Palatinate Forest, I captured the early morning light in the valley. I really hoped that the horses would come by to see what I was doing there – and they did me the favour: so I decided to paint them into my composition.

After I finished, I had a lovely chat with the friendly owners of the property – they even gave me permission to enter their meadow if I want to paint there in the future. I am very happy about that, because it is the only place in my neighbourhood here in the forest where there is (sometimes) sun in winter. 

Painting can be a wonderful door opener – in the truest sense of the word: thank you!

 

Schrebergarten Tor

 

Zurück aus England bin ich sehr froh, dass es auch in meiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft ebenso schöne Motive zu malen gibt:

Das ist ein ganz besonders schönes Schrebergarten Tor, das mit beim Joggen schon öfter aufgefallen ist.

Und jetzt hab ich's endlich auch mal gemalt!

Back from England, I am very happy that there are equally beautiful motifs to paint in my nearest neighbourhood:

This is a particularly beautiful allotment garden gate that I have often noticed while jogging.

And now I have finally painted it!

Oxfordshire – Gate

Dieses schöne Tor hatte ich schon bei unserem ersten Spaziergang dort entdeckt – und ich konnte nicht abreisen ohne das auch noch gemalt zu haben.

Ich hatte es ein paar Tage zuvor schon mal mit meiner Freundin zusammen gezeichnet (mixed Media), das hat mich irgendwie inspiriert das etwas freier als sonst zu malen, mich noch mehr auf das Wesentliche zu konzentrieren...

Gar nicht mal so doof mal was anderes auszuprobieren :-)

I had already spotted this beautiful gate during our first walk there – and I couldn't leave without painting it.

I had already sketched it a few days earlier with my girlfriend (mixed media), which somehow inspired me to paint a little more freely than usual, to focus even more on the essentials...

It's not such a bad idea to try something different :-)

 

Oxfordshire – Gewächshaus

 

Dieses wunderschöne Gewächshaus steht im Garten meiner Freundin: für mich auch ein absolut britisches Motiv.

Die Sonne wanderte erstaunlich langsam: so konnte ich ganz entspannt das schöne Licht-Schattenspiel des Spätsommermorgens einfangen.

Hach: so einen sonnigen Garten mit Gewächshaus hätte ich auch gerne... das wär was!

This beautiful greenhouse stands in my friend's garden: for me, it's also a quintessentially British motif.

The sun moved surprisingly slowly, allowing me to relax and capture the beautiful play of light and shadow on this late summer morning.

Oh, how I would love to have such a sunny garden with a greenhouse... that would be really something!

Birken

 

Diese Birken stehen ebenfalls im kleine Eppental – die habe ich eigentlich nur gemalt, da sie in der einen Ecke des Tals stehen, die auch Nachmittags noch Sonne hat.

Dafür waren sie aber erstaunlich schönes Motiv: die Rinde mit ihrem neutralen weiß reflektiert alle Farben der Umgebung: das machte Spaß da ganz genau hinzugucken...

These birch trees are also located in the small Eppental valley – I only painted them because they stand in the one corner of the valley that still gets sun in the afternoon.

But they made for an amazingly beautiful motif: the bark, with its neutral white colour, reflects all the colours of the surroundings. It was fun to look at them closely...

Eppental im Pfälzer Wald im Sommer

Heute bin ich zum Malen im Wald geblieben: das ist eines meiner Lieblingsmotive hier im Pfälzer Wald: die Wiese im kleinen Eppental.

Es ist total schön, wie sich die Farben und das Licht mit den Jahreszeiten ändern: jetzt fehlt nur noch ein Winterbild im Schnee und die Reihe ist komplett.

Today I stayed in the forest to paint: this is one of my favourite motifs here in the Palatinate Forest: the meadow in the little Eppental valley.

It's absolutely beautiful how the colours and light change with the seasons: now all I need is a winter picture in the snow and the series will be complete.

 

Pfälzer Weinberge Blick

Das war das 2 Bild des Tages: der Weg in den Pfälzer Weinbergen in die andere Richtung. Das malte ich in nur 35 Minuten, ich glaube der Tag war so ein perfekter Mal-Tag für mich: der komplette Malprozess war ganz leicht und locker (und dann auch noch sooo schönes Wetter)!

That was the second painting of the day: the path through the Palatinate vineyards in the other direction. I painted it in just 35 minutes. I think it was just the perfect day for painting: the whole process was really easy and relaxed (and the weather was so beautiful too)!

 

Weg in den Pfälzer Weinbergen

 

An diesem wunderschöne Spätsommertag zog es mich raus aus dem Wald in die Weinberge bei Bad Dürkheim: Manchmal malt sich ein Bild fast von alleine – das hier war sei eins.

Von Anfang an hatte ich einen Plan, und hab das Bild ganz fokussiert ohne Umwege in 50 Minuten gemalt. Es war, als würde mir die Ölfarbe aus dem Pinsel fließen...

So ein Male-Glück: da habe ich mich im Anschluß einfach um 180 Grad gedreht und gleich ein 2. gemalt ....

Malprozess

On this beautiful late summer day, I was drawn out of the forest and into the sunny vineyards near Bad Dürkheim: Sometimes a painting almost paints itself—this was one of those times.

I had a plan from the start and painted this piece with complete focus in 50 minutes without any unnecessary detours. It was as if the oil paint was flowing from my brush...

Such painting bliss: afterwards, I simply turned around 180 degrees and painted a second one....

Abendlicht am Ostparkweiher

Das ist das Bild, dass ich noch im Anschluß an den Workshop am Ostpark Weiher unbedingt malen musste:

Das Licht wurde immer immer schöner – und ich war zwar ein bisschen erschöpft, aber das Malzeug war ja schon da und es wäre eine Schande gewesen, dieses Hammer Licht nicht zu malen.

Ich hab ganz schnell und zügig gemalt, ca 40 Minuten, damit ich das Licht erwische (und ich auch  nicht noch länger stehen wollte). Das tat dem Bild ganz gut, daß ich einfach aufhörte, bevor ich zu viel malen konnte.

This is the painting I just had to do after the workshop at Ostpark Weiher:

The light was getting better and better – and although I was a bit tired, my painting stuff was already there and it would have been a shame not to paint this amazing light.

I painted very quickly, in about 40 minutes, so that I could capture the light (and also because I didn't want to stand there any longer). It was good for the painting that I stopped before I could paint too much.

 

Heideblüte im botanischen Garten

Dieses wunderschöne Heidekrautfeld habe ich im botanischen Garten 
Ich saß beim Malen gemütlich auf einer Bank (um dort auf den engen Weg niemandem im Weg zu stehen), wahrscheinlich ist das Bild deswegen ein bisschen detaillierter als sonst geworden.

Das Licht wurde von Minute zu Minute schöner, mit dem starken Kontrast versuchte ich das in die Sonne blinzeln einzufangen.

I found this beautiful field of heather in the botanical garden. 

I sat comfortably on a bench while painting (so as not to get in anyone's way on the narrow path), which is probably why the picture turned out a little more detailed than usual.

The light became more beautiful by the minute, and I tried to capture the strong contrast in the sun's glare.

Pinien im Abendlicht

 

Ich bin immer wieder ganz begeistert, wie das warm gefärbte Abendlicht die Stämme der Pinien zum Glühen bringt ... ich glaube, ich hätte die im Licht sogar noch orangener anlegen können!

Ich war mir erst nicht sicher, ob den Sonnenstreifen unten auf dem Boden nicht lieber hätte weglassen sollen, da er den leuchteten Stämmen die Show stiehlt – jetzt, mit etwas Abstand, finde ich, das genau dieser Lichtstreif das Motiv erst zu einem Bild macht.

Das Purpur der Erikablüten habe ich etwas übertrieben, die waren nicht nicht so weit - aber es passte farblich perfekt zum Orange und grün.

I am always thrilled by how the warm evening light makes the pine trunks glow... I think I could have made them even more orange in the light!

At first, I wasn't sure whether I should have left out the sunbeams on the ground, as they steal the show from the glowing trunks – but now, with a little distance, I think it's precisely this strip of light that makes the painting what it is.

I exaggerated the purple of the heather blossoms a little; they weren't quite that far out - but it matched the orange and green perfectly.

Schrebergarten im Gegenlicht

Auf dem Weg in den Wald bin ich neulich im Abendlicht an diesem wunderschönen Schrebergarten vorbeirgeradelt: die flach stehende Sonne beleuchtete die Hütte von hinten ganz besonders schön – dieses Leuchten wollte ich unbedingt. malen.

Alson bin ich gestern Abend noch mal rausgeradelt und hab's gemalt.
Ich bin ganz glücklich mit dem Bild: ich habe genau das, was mir beim Vorbeirradeln so gefiel mit dem Pinsel einfangen können.

Wie ihr seht, habe ich eine neue Poachadebox:

On my way to the forest the other day, I cycled past this beautiful allotment garden in the evening light: the low sun illuminated the hut from behind in a particularly beautiful way – I really wanted to capture this glow in a painting.

So yesterday evening, I cycled out there again and painted it.

I'm very happy with the picture: I was able to capture exactly what I liked so much when I cycled past with my brush.

As you can see, I have a new Poachadebox:

Weserufer

Und weil es so schön war, sind wir auch am letzten Tag des Pleinairmalerei Workshops auf der Burg Herstelle noch mal runter an die Weser. Dieses mal sind wir auf unserer Seite geblieben und haben das gegenüberliegende Ufer gemalt.

Mit diesem Demobild aber ich gezeigt, wie simpel es ist die Spiegelung auf dem Wasser zu malen...

And because it was so beautiful, we went back down to the Weser River on the last day of the plein air painting workshop at Herstelle Castle. This time, we stayed on our side and painted the opposite bank. With this demo painting, I showed how easy it is to paint the reflection on the water.

Kastanienbaum auf der Burg Herstelle

Das war mein Demobild am 3. Tag meines Pleinairmalerei Workshops auf der Burg Herstelle.

Dafür, dass ich den eigentlich nur malen wollte, weil ich das Licht unter dem Baum so schön fand, besteht es erstaunlich viel aus nur Baum... 

Aber diese wunderschöne alte Kastanie hat es verdient, die alleinige Hauptdarstellerin zu sein.

Considering that I only wanted to paint it because I found the light under the tree so beautiful, it consists surprisingly much of just the tree...

But this beautiful old chestnut tree deserves to be the main character.
