Bretagne Tag 14 – Bucht von Saint Guirec

Und da der Sommer dann doch noch in der Bretagne ankam, hängten wir noch einen Tag dran, den wir an der Granit Rose in Sanit Guirec verbracht haben.

Die Bucht dort war ganz besonders schön - es hatte richtig Strandbadantmosphäre und die Farben waren der Knaller (vor allem zusammen mit dem pinken Flamingo Schwimmreif).

Das Hotel lag direkt in der Bucht und das nette Personal erlaubte mit von ihrer Terrasse zu malen - so stand ich nicht im Besucherstrom und konnte trotz des Touristen Hotspots relativ in Ruhe malen.

Um Punkt sechs leerte sich die Bucht schlagartig - genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt als ich mit meinem Bild fertig war. So konnte ich der Bretagne mit einem abschließenden Sprung ins Wasser Au revoir sagen.

And since summer finally arrived in Brittany after all, we added another day to our trip, which we spent at the Granit Rose in Saint-Guirec.

The bay there was especially beautiful—it had a real beach resort vibe, and the colors were amazing (especially paired with the pink flamingo swim ring).

The hotel was right on the bay, and the friendly staff let me paint from their terrace—so I wasn’t stuck in the crowd of visitors and could paint in relative peace despite it being a tourist hotspot.

At six o’clock exactly, the bay emptied out all at once—right at the perfect moment, just as I was finishing my painting. So I was able to say “Au revoir” to Brittany with one last dip in the water.

 

Ostsee Pleinair Festival – Riesenrad Strandpromenade Kühlungsborn

Das ist noch so ein aus der (Wind-) Not geborenes Motiv: ich glaube nicht dass ich mir sowas komplexes wie das Riesenrad auf  der Ufer-Promenade bei freier Platzwahl ausgesucht hätte. Immerhin konnte ich es mit leicht machen, in dem ich das Rad direkt von der Seit malte und so viel wenige Detail (und Ellipsen) malen musste.

Mit im Bild ist noch mal der DLRG Turm Nr. 6, den ich Schin am vormittag malte – dieses mal von der anderen Seite.

This is another motif born out of necessity (or rather, the wind): I don’t think I would have chosen something as complex as the Ferris wheel on the waterfront promenade if I’d had my pick of subjects. At least I made it easier on myself by painting the wheel directly from the side, which meant I had to paint far fewer details (and ellipses).

Also in the picture is DLRG Tower No. 6, which I had already painted that morning—this time from the other side.

Weihnachtsmarkt in Bad Dürkheim

 

Nachdem ich vor ein paar Jahren auf dem Frankfurter Weihnachtsmann gemalt habe, wollte ich das nie nie wieder tun: einfach viel zu viele Menschen, alles zu eng und zu laut.

Aber der Bad Dürkheimer Weihnachtsmarkt ist soviel gemütlicher und beschaulicher, dass ich`s doch noch mal gewagt habe: es war total schön, ich habe mich mit nur netten Passanten unterhalten und die Musik war von Live-Bläsern und auch richtig angenehm.

After painting at the Frankfurt Christmas market a few years ago, I never wanted to do it again: there were simply too many people, it was too crowded and too loud.

But the Christmas market in Bad Dürkheim is so much more cozy and tranquil that I decided to give it another try: it was absolutely wonderful, I chatted with only friendly passers-by, and the music was provided by live brass players and was really pleasant.

Oxford – Radcliff Camera

 

Nachmittags waren wir alle zusammen in Oxford, und während die anderen Sightsseing machet, malte ich die Radcliffe Camera, über die ich nun alles weiß: währen ich dort malte habe ich ungefähr 100 Führungen gehört - in allen Sprachen.

Kurz zusammengefasst: das ist einer der Bibliotheken der Unis dort, und Camera leitet sich vom Wort Kammer ab, und hat nix mit einer Kamera zu tun.

Das Motiv hätte ich mir selbst jetzt nicht unbedingt selbst ausgesucht, es ist doch ziemlich komplex, aber meine Freunde hatten es sich als Wunsch Motiv ausgesucht – und jetzt bin ich froh, dass ich's getan hab. Wieder so einiges gelernt.

In the afternoon, we were all together in Oxford, and while the others were sightseeing, I painted the Radcliffe Camera, about which I now know everything: while I was painting there, I heard about 100 guided tours – in all languages.

In short: it is one of the university libraries there, and Camera is derived from the word chamber and has nothing to do with a camera.

I wouldn't have picked this subject myself, as it's pretty complex, but my friends had chosen it as their favourite subject – and now I'm glad I did it. Learned a lot again.

London – Salisbury Pub

Um mir die Wartezeit bis zur Ausstellungseröffnung der Royal Society of Marine Artists (s. vorigen Post) zu verkürzen, bin ich mit meinem Malzeug los und hab in der Nähe ein Motiv gesucht, das ich nur in London malen kann: in Covent Garden bin ich fündig geworden.

Das ist der Salibsury Pub, eröffnet 1899.

Ich hab mich vielleicht ein bisschen übernommen mit diesem Motiv, ich habe ewig gemalt (fast 3 Stunden), aber irgendwann hatte ich's dann doch fertig.

Spaß hat's auf jeden Fall gemacht: ich war weit raus aus meiner Comfortszone, dafür habe ich ein (für mich) typisches London Motiv gemalt.

To pass the time until the opening of the Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition (see previous post), I took my painting stuff and went out to find a subject nearby that I could only paint in London: I found it in Covent Garden.

This is the Salisbury Pub, which opened in 1899.

I may have bitten off more than I could chew with this subject, as I painted for ages (almost three hours), but I finally finished it.

It was definitely fun: I was way out of my comfort zone, but I painted a subject that is (for me) typical of London.

 

Bretagne – Plage d'Amiets

Wieder mal haben mich die Gezeiten überrascht: Dieses mal ist das Wasser viel zu schnell verschwunden.... Da ich dann ein bisschen im Blindflug malte, so ganz ohne Wasser, habe ich als Übersprungshandlung die Mescnhen alle reingemalt, denn die sind geblieben :-)
 

Once again, the tides took me by surprise: this time, the water disappeared much too quickly.... Since I was then painting a bit blindly, without any water at all, I painted all the people in as a displacement activity, because they all remained :-)

Wähl Liebe Demo auf dem Römer am 15.2.25

2 Wochen vor der Bundestagswahl 2025 fand auf dem Frankfurter Römerberg die vom CSD initiierte Demo für Vielfalt und Demokratie unter der Überschrift WÄHL LIEBE statt.

All diese Menschen zu sehen, die bei den eisigen Temperaturen auf die Straße gehen um unsere Demokratischen Werte zu verteidigen macht mir ein bisschen Hoffnung, dass die Wahl am 23.2. doch nicht ganz so schlimm ausfällt, wie es mich die vielen schlechten Nachrichten befürchten lassen.

Mein Dank gilt den großartigen Menschen vom historischen Museum, die es mir ermöglicht haben dort den Blick aus dem Erkerfenster malen zu dürfen.

Und auch Kamü, die mir mit quietschenden Copicmarkern  Gesellschaft leistete.

Von ihr stammt die Idee die Regenbogenfarben mit einem einzigen mehrfarbigen Strich zu malen: cool, oder? Ihr Bild seht ihr unten.

Etwas weiter entfernt malte Sibylle ihren Blick auf das Geschehen. Sie hat eine großen Beitrag dazu geleistet, dass ich mich überhaupt getraut habe die Demo zu malen. Ihr Bild seht ihr auch unten.

Erker im historischen Museum

2 weeks before the Bundestag election 2025, the demo for diversity and democracy initiated by the CSD took place on Frankfurt's Römerberg under the heading VOTE LOVE.

Seeing all these people taking to the streets in the freezing temperatures to defend our democratic values gives me a little hope that the election on February 23rd won't be as bad as I feared from all the bad news.

My thanks go to the great people at the historical museum who made it possible for me to paint the view from the bay window there.

And also Kamü, who kept me company with her squeaky copic markers.

She came up with the idea of painting the rainbow colors with a single multicolored stroke: cool, right? You can see her picture below.

A little further away, Sibylle painted her view of the action. She made a big contribution to me daring to paint the demo in the first place. You can also see her picture below. 

 

USK Treffen in Darmsatdt

Am Wochenende haben die Urbansketchers, mit denen ich ab und an male, ihr 10 Jähriges Jubiläum gefeiert:

So habe ich mal wieder ganz andere Motive gemalt – und mich damit tatsächlich ziemlich schwer getan.

Schön wars aber auf jeden Fall mit all den Zeichnern!

So I have once again painted completely different motifs - and actually had quite a hard time with it.

But in any case it was nice to be with all the artists!

Bretagne - Pêcheurs à Pieds

 

Und dann war da leider schon der letzte Tag in der Bretagne...

Gleich nach dem Kaffee bin ich morgens runter an den Strand der bei Ebbe wieder mal ganz anders aussah.

Man könnte meinen, das wären alles nur Steine am Strand - deswegen habe diese beiden "Pêcheurs à Pieds" beim Buddeln  mit ins Bild gemalt, erst so sieht man, wie groß diese Felsen sind.

And then, unfortunately, it was already the last day in Brittany...

Right after coffee, I went down to the beach in the morning, which once again looked very different at low tide.

You might think they were just stones on the beach - that's why I painted these two "Pêcheurs à Pieds" in the painting while they were digging, so you can see how big these rocks are.

Herbstlaub im Günthersburgpark

Jeden Morgen, wenn ich im Park jogge, bin ich immer ganz begeistert von den farbigen Laubteppichen, die sich unter den Bäumen sammeln...

Heute war dann glaube ich fast die letzte Gelegenheit das zu malen, bevor die Blätter alle gefallen sind und die Laubbläser sie gründlich beseitigen.

Selbst an so einem trüben Tag sieht es aus als schiene die Sonne aus diesem knallgelben Laub.

Every morning when I go jogging in the park, I am always thrilled by the colourful carpets of leaves that gather under the trees....

Today was almost the last chance to paint it before the leaves have all fallen and the leaf blowers thoroughly remove them.

Even on such a gloomy day, it looks like the sun is shining out of these bright yellow leaves.

Contis Plage noch mehr Ebbe Pfützen

Diese Ebbe hab ich fast zur gleichen Tageszeit wie die am Tag davor gemalt, nur dieses mal war das Wetter viel diesiger, so dass der Horizont sich scheinbar ins Nichts auflöst.

Da ich ich gestern ein bisschen unzufrieden war mit den Farben der Pfützen habe ich heute noch ein bisschen genauer hingeguckt, und noch länger gemischt: die Pfützen sind irgendwie nie richtig himmelblau, sondern gehen immer eins bisschen ins rötliche (wohl weil sich da die Farbe des nassen Sandes mit reinmischt).

I painted this low tide almost at the same time of day as the one the day before, only this time the weather was much hazier, so that the horizon seems to dissolve into nothingness.

Since I was a bit dissatisfied with the colors of the puddles yesterday I looked a bit closer today, and mixed even longer: the puddles are somehow never really sky blue, but always go a bit into the reddish (probably because there is the color of the wet sand mixed in).

Günthersburgpark im Schnee

Zwei Tage später liegt der Schnee immer noch - und die Sonne wärmt sogar schon so, dass ich mir bei diesem Blick über den Günthersburgpark auf die Frankfurter Skyline ein bisschen mehr Zeit lassen konnte.

Fast exakt vor einem Jahr habe ich diesen Blick schon mal gemalt, ohne Schnee. Und dabei habe ich feststellen dürfen, dass ich beim Malen der blattlosen Bäume Fortschritte mache!

Two days later, the snow is still there - and the sun is even warming up enough for me to take a little more time with this view over Günthersburgpark to the Frankfurt skyline.

I painted this view almost exactly a year ago, without snow. And I noticed that I was making progress in painting the leafless trees!

Nach dem ich gestern bei meiner morgendlichen Laufrunde im Park diesen wunderschönen Blick entdeckt habe, mußte ich heute dieses tolle Licht am Café im Güntersburgpark unbedingt malen!

Dieses Motiv hatte ich vor ein paar Jahren schon mal gemalt - und ich finde der Vergleich zeigt sehr schön, wieviel ich mit den ca. 350 Bildern, die ich dazwischen gemalt habe, dazu gelernt habe!

After I discovered this beautiful view yesterday during my morning run in the park, I absolutely had to paint this great light at the café in Güntersburgpark today!

I had already painted this motif a few years ago - and I think the comparison shows very nicely how much I learned with the approx. 350 pictures I painted in between!

Promenade à la Plage (Contis Plage)

Bei diesem Bild habe ich lange gezögert, ob ich die Menschen reinmalen soll (zu oft missglücken sie mir und ich ruiniere das Bild) – denke jetzt aber, dass sie das Motiv erst ausmachen. Und es ist mir sogar gelungen sie genau so locker wie den Rest zu malen :-)

With this one I hesitated whether I should paint the people in (too often I struggle and ruin the painting) - but now I think that they made the motif. And I even managed to paint them just as loose as the rest :-)

Vagues (Contis Plage)

 

Wellen zu malen ist immer wieder was Besonderes für mich:

Man guckt und guckt... Und versucht sie immer mit den Augen anzuhalten – sie halten einfach nicht still!

Bei dem Bild ist es ein bisschen mit mir durchgegangen: ich habe alle Wellen an dem mir liebsten Punkt gemalt: wenn sie gerade anfangen zu brechen. Aber eigentlich sind die meisten nur ein einziger Gischtstreifen (den Moment finde ich aber etwas langweilig, und male ihn deshalb nicht gerne).

So wurde das Bild ein bisschen unrealistisch. Die Menschen hätte ich auch nicht unbedingt ergänzen sollen, brauchte sie aber um zu zeigen wie hoch die Wellen waren.

To paint waves is always something special to me.

I look and look... And always try to check them off with your eyes - they just won't stay still!

With this Painting it went a bit over with me: I painted all the waves at my favourite point: when they just start to break. But actually most of them are just a single spray (I find the moment a bit boring, and therefore don't like to paint it).

So the painting became a bit unrealistic. I shouldn't have added the people either, but I needed them to show how high the waves were.

Contre Jour (Contis Plage)

Ich musste beim Malen die ganze Zeit so blinzeln, dass ich danach überall dunkle Punkte sah...

Solche Gegenlicht Situationen male ich immer sehr gerne - fand es aber bei den hier sehr schwierig: so richtig glücklich bin ich mit den Glitzern auf dem Wasser noch nicht... aber meine Pfütze mag ich :-)

I had to squint all the time while painting so that I saw dark spots everywhere...

I always like to paint such backlight situations - but I found it very difficult with these one: I am not really happy with the glitter on the water yet... but I like my puddle :-)

Vagues à Mer Basse (Contis Plage)

Beim letzten Bild waren mir die Wellen zu klein – so bin ich jetzt näher ran. 

Ich habe erst gezögert, ob ich die Menschen wirklich mit reinmalen soll, finde jetzt aber, dass sie perfekt reinpassen. Und auch hier ging es mir vor allem darum, lockerer zu malen... geschafft!

At the last painting the waves were too small for me - so now I am closer. 

At first I hesitated whether I should really paint the people in, but now I think they fit in perfectly. And here too, my main concern was to paint more loosely... done!
