Bretagne Tag 8 – Felsen am Meer

Auch dieses Motiv habe ich nur Dank der Suche nach einem windgeschützen Platz gefunden: 

Ich habe mich ganz auf den Kontrast zwischen dem dunklen Schatten der Felsen und dem leuchtenden Meer konzentriert. Das kleine Boot, das in der Sonne so schön leuchtete war dann das Tüpfelchen auf dem i.

I also found this motif only because I was looking for a spot sheltered from the wind: 

I focused entirely on the contrast between the dark shadows of the rocks and the brightly shining sea. The little boat, which stood out so beautifully in the sun, was the icing on the cake.

Ostsee Pleinair Festival – Kutter Anna Lena in Hafen von Kühlungsborn

  

Am Donnertag war der erste Tag des freien Malens des Ostsee Pleinair Festivals – den ich mit den anderen Maler*innen, die ich jedes jähr dort treffe, im Hafen von Kühlungsborn verbracht habe.

ich habe dieses Motiv gewählt, weil ich die Lücke zischen dem Kutter und dem Pier so interessant fand (und es am Tag zuvor bei einem anderen Maler entdeckt hatte) und total unterschätzt, wie lange ich dann an dem drum rum (dem Boot) malen musste.

Deswegen habe ich an diesem Tag nur ein Bild gemalt ...

Ich aber froh, mich mit diesem komplexen Motiv aus meine Komfortzone gewagt zu haben.

Thursday was the first day of open painting at the Baltic Sea Plein Air Festival—which I spent in the harbor of Kühlungsborn with the other artists I meet there every year.

I chose this subject because I found the gap between the cutter and the pier so interesting (and had spotted it the day before while watching another painter) and totally underestimated how long it would take me to paint the surrounding area (the boat).

That’s why I only painted one picture that day...

But I’m glad I ventured out of my comfort zone with this complex subject.

Segelclub Otterstadt

Diese Boote liegen im Hafen des  Otterstädter Segelclubs am Rhein (auf Höhe der Leberwurstinsel - cooler Name, oder?).

Ich war total geflashed von den brillianten Farben in der gleißenden Sonne - das bin ich aus dem Wald gar nicht mehr gewohnt …

Dieses Motiv ist eine schöne Einstimmung für mich: nächste Woche bin ich beim Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn und werde bestimmt noch mal Boote malen. Ich freu mich schon …!

These boats are moored in the harbor of the Otterstadt Sailing Club on the Rhine (near Leberwurst Island—cool name, right?).

I was totally blown away by the brilliant colors in the glistening sun—I’m not used to that at all coming from the forest…

This scene is a nice way to get me in the mood: next week I’ll be at the Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn and will definitely be painting boats again. I’m really looking forward to it…!

Rheinufer bei Eltville im Sonnenuntergang

 

Gestern habe ich eine Kurztrip nach Eltville am Rhein gemacht:

Als ich mit dem Bild anfing, waren die Farben ganz soft und zurückgenommen: Genauso wollte ich mein Bild malen.

Doch mit jeder Minute wurde das Licht spektakulärer und die Farben gesättigter und leuchtender...

Ich habe dem Sonnenuntergang dann hinterher gemacht, bin überall immer wieder drüber um auch auf meinem Bild gesättigter zu werden - und wäre die Sonne dann nicht untergegangen, würde ich da wohl jetzt noch stehen und malen :-)

Yesterday, I took a short trip to Eltville am Rhein:

When I started the painting, the colors were very soft and subdued: that's exactly how I wanted to do my painting.

But with every minute that passed, the light became more spectacular and the colors more saturated and vibrant...

I then followed the sunset, repeatedly going over the entire painting with my brush to make it more saturated—and if the sun hadn't set, I would probably still be standing there painting :-)

London – Themse

Am nächsten Tag bin ich an die Themse geradelt zum Malen: 

Das war wahrscheinlich eine Schnaps Idee den Westminster Palace nur mal eben schnell als Hintergrund zu malen ...

Aber mir gefiel dieses kleine Bootshaus mit Anleger und der Gangway so gut...!

Ich war sehr erstaunt, dass in London, so weit weg vom Meer, die Gezeiten so stark spürbar sind:

In den 2 Stunden, die ich malte, sank das Wasser rapide: die Gangway war zu Beginn noch waagerecht, und das Haus überlappte das gegenüberliegende Ufer noch deutlich – ich dachte erst ich hab nur nicht richtig geguckt :-)

Die Frabe der Themse entspricht tatsächlich exakt dem grünlichem Grauton meines Paletten-Schmuddels: das sind Farbreste, die ich in den letzten Wochen/Monaten auf meinen Reisen gesammelt habe. In der Farbe der Themse ist also Strandfarbe, Waldfarbe; Allgäufarbe, Bretgagnefarbe, Amrumfarbe und noch mehr...

Dieses Bild wurde mir übrigens noch von der Staffelei weg gekauft (naja fast: ich habe es noch mit heimgenommen, um es zu firnissen – ein feuchtes Ölbild kann man eben nicht einfach so einpacken und mitgeben. Schade, jetzt muss ich erst noch aufwändig in die USA schicken.

Palleten-Schmuddel

The next day, I cycled to the Thames to paint: 

It was probably a silly idea to paint Westminster Palace as a background just like a quick sketch...But I liked this little boathouse with its pier and gangway so much...!

I was very surprised that in London, so far from the sea, the tides are so noticeable:

In the two hours that I was painting, the water sank rapidly: at the beginning, the gangway was still horizontal, and the house clearly overlapped the opposite bank – at first I thought I just hadn't looked properly :-)

The colour of the Thames actually corresponds exactly to the greenish grey tone of my palette smudges: these are paint leftovers that I have collected during my travels over the last few weeks/months. So the colour of the Thames is the colour of the beach, the colour of the forest; the colour of the Allgäu, the colour of Brittany, the colour of Amrum and more...

Incidentally, this painting was bought off my easel (well, almost: I took it home with me to varnish it) – you can't just pack up a wet oil painting and send it off. It's a shame, now I have to go to the trouble of sending it to the USA.

 

Bretagne – Übersicht aller Bilder

 

Da ich mit dem Posten gerade nicht so richtig hinterherkomme, poste ich jetzt einfach schnell die Übersicht aller Bilder, die ich in den 2 Wochen in der Bretagne gemalt habe.

Wie jedes Jahr, habe ich nicht ansatzweise alles gemalt, was es wert gewesen wäre - doch ich weiß ja, dass ich wieder komme – so hab ich was zum drauf freuen, dass nicht alles weggemalt ist :-)

Bretagne – Boote im Hafen von Kerfissien

Diese Botoe liegen im kleinen Hafen von Kerfissien.

Ich habe dort letztes Jahr eines meiner Lieblingsbilder gemalt – und fand es schwierig, mich nicht einfach selbst zu kopieren, sondern bewusst einen anderen Blickwinkel zu wählen.

Das Ergebnis mag ich nun auch richtig gerne – das scheint ein gutes Motiv für mich zu sein.

These boats are moored in the small harbour of Kerfissien.

I painted one of my favourite pictures there last year – and found it difficult not to simply copy myself, but to consciously choose a different angle.

I really like the result – it seems to be a good motif for me.

Ostsee Pleinair Festival _ Katamaran

Das 2. Motiv des Tages habe ich dann nicht selbst ausgesucht, sondern einfach das gemalt, was Bernadette sich ausgeguckt hatte: Das hätte ich sonst wohl nie gemalt (direkt daneben lag nämlich ein wunderschöner alter Segler). 

Direkt nach dem Malen, war ich gar nicht zufrieden mit dem Bild, entscheid mich daher, es nicht mit in die Ausstellung zu geben... 

Jetzt mag ich es aber ganz gern – vor allem weil es mich an die wunderschöne Zeit erinnert, die ich dort auf dem Steg mit Bernadette hatte :-)

I didn't choose the second motif of the day myself, but simply painted what Bernadette had chosen: I would probably never have painted it otherwise (there was a beautiful old sailor right next to it). 

Immediately after painting it, I wasn't at all happy with the painting, so I decided not to include it in the exhibition... 

But now I quite like it - especially because it reminds me of the wonderful time I had there on the jetty with Bernadette :-)

Artretreat Allgäu Boot im Auwaldsee

Den 3. Tag starteten wir im Regen - eigentlich wollten ich mit den anderen unterm Dach malen, aber ich fand so ein schönes Motiv, dass ich mich dann doch mit Schirm direkt ans Wasser stellte.

Ich denke, das wars wert ...

We started the 3rd day in the rain - we actually wanted to paint under the roof, but I found such a beautiful motif that I ended up standing right next to the water with an umbrella.

I think it was worth it ...

 

Flachbodenboot bei Ebbe auf Borkum

Ein weiteres After Work Bild – dieser alter Flachboden-Segler fiel bei Ebbe auf Grund und war ein wunderschönes Motiv. Wie so oft um diese Tageszeit: richtig schön wurde das Licht erst, als ich bereits fertig war, und ich muss mich dann jedes mal bremsen und nicht immer weiter dem Licht hinterher zu malen.

 Another after-work painting - this old flat-bottomed sailing boat fell aground at low tide and was a wonderful subject. As is so often the case at this time of day, the light became really beautiful when I was already finished, and I have to stop myself every time and not keep chasing the light.

Segelschule Nieblum bei Ebbe

Mit diesem Bild von der Segelschule in Nieblum bei Ebbe verabschiede mich von Föhr: gemalt habe ich es am letzten Abend meiner wunderschönen Pleinairmalerei Workshopwoche mit einer wirklich tollen Truppe.

Im nächsten Post zeige ich ein paar Impression des Malkurses ….

With this painting of the sailing school in Nieblum at low tide I say goodbye to Föhr: I painted it on the last evening of my wonderful plein air painting workshop week with a really great group.

Bretagne – Panorama bucht von Kerfissien

Diese 2 Bilder habe ich auch noch während meiner Zeit in der Bretagne gemalt, es war eine Auftragsarbeit - und ist das bisher längste Bild, das ich je gemalt habe (120x18 cm).

Es ist an 2 aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen entstanden und macht seinen neuen Besitzer sehr glücklich 🤗

I also painted these 2 paintinhd during my time in Brittany, it was a commissioned work - and is the longest painting I have ever did (120x18 cm).

It was painted in 2 sessions and makes its new owner very happy 🤗

 

Bretagne – Segelboote

Das Segeln ist in der Bretagne ein Unterrichtsfach - und es ist total irre, wie klein die Kinder zum Teil noch sind, die da ganz souverän die Boote steuern.

Die Farben im Bild sehen aus, als würde ich von der bretonischen Tourismusbehörde bezahlt - aber ich schwöre: So siehst es da als!

Sailing is a school subject in Brittany - and it's absolutely crazy how small some of the kids are who are steering the boats so confidently.

The colours in the painting look like I'm being paid by the Breton tourism authority - but I swear: that's what it looks like!

 

Bretagne – Boote bei Ebbe

Diese Boote bei Ebbe, mit den schönen Spiegelungen in den Pfützen wolle ich die ganze Zeit schon malen … und obwohl ich mich total beeilt habe, kam die Flut viel zu schnell, so dass ich das Bild (im Blindflug) in den Felsen beenden musste.

Einen Vorteil haben solche Flutbilder allerdings: ich male nicht zu lange dran (und mach sie dabei kaputt).

I wanted to paint these boats at low tide, with the beautiful reflections in the puddles, all the time ... and although I really hurried, the tide came in far too quickly, so I had to finish the picture (flying blind) in the rocks.

However, there is one advantage to flood paintings like this: I don't paint them for too long (and ruin them in the process).

 

Schiff im Hafen von Kühlungsborn

 

Das ist mein letztes Bild vom Ostsee Plein Air Festival in diesem Jahr:
Ein Schiff namens Heuler.

Das war noch mal eine richtige Challenge für mich, ich fing total verkrampft und unlocker an und war deswegen auch sehr langsam.

So wurde die Zeit bis zur Abgabe der Bilder um 17 Uhr auch recht knapp - wenig hilfreich war, das Torsten mich darauf hinwies, dass meine Spiegelung viel zu detailliert wurde und so den Blick vom eigentlichen Motiv, dem Boot weglenkte. Das stimmte aber leider absolut, ich hatte ein ganz exakte Reflexion des Schiffs gemalt, mit allen Details.

Also wischte ich auf der Zielgeraden das ganze Wasser noch mal weg und hudelte die Spiegelung ganz rough in den letzten 10 Minuten hin (hätte das nicht geklappt, wäre das Bild unfertig in der Ausstellung gelandet).

Das Ergebnis zeigt, wie gut der Tipp von Torsten war: das Bild lebt nun von dem Unterscheid zwischen pingelig und locker.

This is my last painting from the Baltic Sea Plein Air Festival this year:

This was another real challenge for me, I started out totally tense and unrelaxed and was therefore very slow.

So the time until I had to hand in the paintings at 5 p.m. was also quite short - so it didn't help much that Torsten pointed out to me that my reflection was far too detailed and thus drew the eye away from the actual motif, the boat. Unfortunately, that was absolutely true, I had painted a very exact mirror image of the boat, with all the details.

So I wiped away all the water again on the home stretch and huddle the reflection very roughly in the last 10 minutes (if that hadn't worked, the painting would have ended up unfinished in the exhibition).

The result shows how good Torsten's tip was: the painting now lives from the difference between fussy and loose.

Seebrücke Kühlungsborn

Das erste Bild des 2 .Tages beim Freien Malen des Ostsee Plein Air Festivals malte ich zusammen mit Torsten und Bernadette an der Seebrücke in Kühlungsborn - die Fähre verschwand leider, kurz nachdem wir anfingen zu malen, ich habe sie dann vom Handyfoto abgemalt, da die ganze Komposition darauf aufbaute. Während des Malens aber, wurde der schöne Schatten aber immer wichtiger...

Mit den beiden anderen war es sehr schön und lustig, sie haben, als ich mein Bild beendete, noch Frühstück geholt, das wir gleich am Strand verputzten. Danach sind wir dann zusammen weiter gezogen in den Hafen ...

I painted the first picture of the 2nd day of the Baltic Sea Plein Air Festival together with Torsten and Bernadette at the pier in Kühlungsborn - unfortunately the ferry disappeared shortly after we started painting, I then painted it from the cell phone photo, as the whole composition was based on it. During the painting, however, the beautiful shadow became more and more important...

It was very nice and funny with the other two, when I finished my painting they went to get breakfast, which we ate right on the beach. Then we moved on together to the harbor ...

Hafen Rerik

 

Mit diesem Bild habe ich versucht das schöne Contre Jour Licht im Reriker Hafen am Abend einzufangen - und habe mich dabei ein bisschen verzettelt.

Mir persönlich gefällt das Bild nicht besonder (ich hatte was anderes im Sinn)s, aber wir hatten dort ein gute Zeit (mit vielen sehr netten Passanten), so ist es doch zumindest eine schöne Erinnerung :-)

With this painting I tried to capture the beautiful Contre Jour light in Rerik harbor in the evening - and got a bit lost.

I personally don't particularly like the result (I had something else in mind), but we had a good time there (with lots of very nice passers-by), so at least it's a nice memory :-)

Bretgane – Boot

Im Winter findet man hier in der Bretagne nur wenige Boote, die meisten sind in Sicherheit gebracht – dieses liegt in der Bucht von Port Neuf.

Für dieses Bild habe ich endlich die Ölfarben getestet, die mir freundlicherweise von Winsor&Newton zugeschickt wurden. Sie haben mir meine Lieblingspalette zusammengestellt, bestehend aus den 3 Grundfarben in warm und kalt, sowie Paynes grau und Vandyck braun.

Es war ein wenig ungewohnt, da einige Farben einen unterschiedlichen Pigmentgehalt haben, so dass ich zum Mischen von einigen Farben mehr und von anderen weniger brauchte als sonst.

Vielleicht macht die Qualität von Winton gegenüber Artist einen Unterschied?

Ich muss mich mit den Farben noch mehr vertraut machen – ich hoffe, dass man meine "Ups"-Momente im Ergebnis nicht so sehr sehen kann.

Winsor]Newton Ölfarben

Today I finally tested the oil paints that Winsor&Newton kindly sent to me. They put together my favourite palette for me, consisting of the 3 primary colours in warm and cold, as well as Paynes grey and Vandyck brown.

It was still a little unfamiliar, as some colours have a different pigment content, so I needed more of some colours and less of others than usual for mixing.

Perhaps the Winton versus Artist quality makes a difference?

I’ll have to familiarise myself with it more - but hopefully you can’t see my „oops moments“ in the result.
