Pleinairmalerei Workshop im Pfälzer Wald

  

Das ist das Demobild meines Einzel-Workshops im Pfälzer Wald - es ist keine Zufall, dass es  dem zuletzt geposteten Bild ähnelt: Ich habe mit diesem Motiv sehr gut zeigen könne, wie man auf einer dunkelgrün grundierten Malplatte nur die hellen Farben setzt und so das Licht , dass durch die Bäume blitzt so richtig zum leuchten bringen kann. 

Das Bild von Johanna wurde super gut, ganz reduziert - und ihr ist gelungen wirklich nur das nötigste zu malen. Auch ihr Ölskizzen (Pochades) sind ganz wunderbar geworden: Vereinfachung vom feinsten! Mein Demoboard wurde nicht voll und ich habe zuhause noch 2 kleine Bilder ergänzt.

This is the demonstration painting from my one-to-one workshop in the Palatinate Forest – it’s no coincidence that it resembles the most recently posted picture: this subject allowed me to demonstrate very effectively how, on a painting board primed with dark green, you can apply only the light colours and thus really bring out the light that flashes through the trees. 

Johanna’s painting turned out brilliantly, very minimalist –and she managed to paint only what was absolutely essential, only that was needed. Her oil sketches (pochades) also turned out wonderfully: simplification at its finest! My demonstration board didn’t end up completely full, so I added two more small paintings at home.

Zurück im Pfälzer Wald

 

Nachdem ich (bis auf den letzten Tag) 2 Wochen lang in der Bretagne gefroren habe, ist es zurück in Deutschland super heiß - und ich bin total froh, dass ich mich in Wöad flüchten kann, hier ist es einigermaßen haushaltbar.

Trotzdem habe ich mich nicht weit wegbewegt, um jede Anstrengung zu vermeiden und habe den Blick in unsere "Nachbarschaft" gemalt.

Dieses Bild habe ich ohne Brille gemalt: Da ich kurzsichtig bin, sah ich nur die ganzen Grüntöne und habe die ganzen Details im Wald ignorieren können. Das Bild ist dadurch schön "blockig" geworden, wie ich find. 

Ich zeige hier auch mal die Zwischenstufen – das vorletzte Stadium hätte auch fast schon gereicht: es zeigt un erzählt alles, worum es mir bei diesem Motiv ging.

After freezing my butt off in Brittany for two weeks (except for the last day), it’s super hot back in Germany—and I’m so glad I can escape to the forest; it’s somewhat bearable here.

Still, I didn’t go very far to avoid any exertion and painted a view of our “neighborhood.”

I painted this one without my glasses: Since I’m nearsighted, I could only see all the shades of green and was able to ignore all the details in the forest. As a result, the painting turned out nicely “blocky,” in my opinion. 

I’m also showing the intermediate stages here—the penultimate stage would have almost been enough on its own: it shows and conveys everything that was important to me about this subject.

Bretagne Tag 14 – Bucht von Saint Guirec

Und da der Sommer dann doch noch in der Bretagne ankam, hängten wir noch einen Tag dran, den wir an der Granit Rose in Sanit Guirec verbracht haben.

Die Bucht dort war ganz besonders schön - es hatte richtig Strandbadantmosphäre und die Farben waren der Knaller (vor allem zusammen mit dem pinken Flamingo Schwimmreif).

Das Hotel lag direkt in der Bucht und das nette Personal erlaubte mit von ihrer Terrasse zu malen - so stand ich nicht im Besucherstrom und konnte trotz des Touristen Hotspots relativ in Ruhe malen.

Um Punkt sechs leerte sich die Bucht schlagartig - genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt als ich mit meinem Bild fertig war. So konnte ich der Bretagne mit einem abschließenden Sprung ins Wasser Au revoir sagen.

And since summer finally arrived in Brittany after all, we added another day to our trip, which we spent at the Granit Rose in Saint-Guirec.

The bay there was especially beautiful—it had a real beach resort vibe, and the colors were amazing (especially paired with the pink flamingo swim ring).

The hotel was right on the bay, and the friendly staff let me paint from their terrace—so I wasn’t stuck in the crowd of visitors and could paint in relative peace despite it being a tourist hotspot.

At six o’clock exactly, the bay emptied out all at once—right at the perfect moment, just as I was finishing my painting. So I was able to say “Au revoir” to Brittany with one last dip in the water.

 

Bretgane Tag 13 – Brandung in der Sonne

 

Am letzten Tag in Kerfissien, nachdem sich der Nebel vom Morgen verzogen hat, wurde es fast schon sommerlich.

Ich habe dann die Brandung an den Felsen vorm Haus noch mal bei Sonne gemalt: Eigentlich ging's mir nur um die Schatten, die auf dem weißen Schaum den kritzeblauen Himmel reflektieren.

On my last day in Kerfissien, once the morning mist had cleared, it felt almost like summer.

I then painted the surf crashing against the rocks in front of the house once more in the sunshine: I was actually only interested in the shadows that reflect the deep blue sky on the white foam.

Bretagne Tag 13 – Felsen im Nebel

An diesem Morgen wurden wir vom Nebel begrüßt - so eine wunderschöne Atmosphäre! Ich bin dann gleich nach dem Kaffe runter in die Ebbe.

Solche Nebelbilder liebe ich zu malen – und sie sind eine ganz wunderbare Tonwert Übung.

Als ich mit dem Bild fast fertig war, kam ein Hochzeitspaar um sich am Strand fotografieren zu lassen:

Perfekt um die die drei gleich mit ins Motiv zu malen (durch das weiße Kleid bekam das ganze gleich was mystisches)

Das Foto von mir hat unser freundliche Hausnachbar gemacht und mir netterweise geschickt.

 We were greeted by fog this morning – such a beautiful atmosphere! I headed down to the foreshore straight after my coffee.

I love painting scenes like this in the fog – and they make for a wonderful exercise in values.

Just as I was nearly finished with the painting, a wedding couple arrived to have their photos taken on the beach:

It was the perfect opportunity to paint the three of them straight into the scene (the white dress immediately gave the whole thing a mystical feel).

The photo of me was taken by our friendly neighbour, who was kind enough to send it to me.

Bretagne Tag 12 – Treppe im Felsen (La Roche Fondue)

 

Dieses Bild habe ich als Dankeschön für unseren tollen Gastgeber in der Bretagne gemalt. Seine Großtante (glaube ich) hat damals dieses Haus direkt an die Felsen gebaut, die Eingangstreppe passte genau in die Lücke....

Dieser Felsen wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts schon mal gemalt, von Armand Prunier:

Im Hintergrund erkennt ihr wahrscheinlich das kleine Garde de Corps, dass ich auch schon ein paar mal gemalt habe.

I painted this little one as a thank-you to our wonderful host in Brittany. His great-aunt (I think) built this house right up against the cliffs back then; the front steps fitted perfectly into the gap....

This cliff was painted once before, at the end of the 19th century, by Armand Prunier:

In the background, you can probably make out the little Garde de Corps, which I’ve also painted a few times.

Bretagne Tag 12 – Blick zur Ile de Batz

 

Das ist der Blick in Richtung nach Osten (weil immer noch Westwind) – ganz lein sieht man hinten links die Ole de Batz. Eigentlich war es total bedeckt - aber ab und an blitze ein Sonnerenstrahl der noch niedrigen Morgensonne durch und glitzerte im Gegenlicht auf dem Wasser. Diesen Moment habe ich mit diesem Bild einfangen wollen.

Bei diesen Weitsichten über die Ebbe versuche ich immer Menschen zu ergänzen, als Masstab: Ohne die würden die Felsen wie Steine aussehen.

This is the view towards the east (as there’s still a westerly wind) – just about visible in the far left-hand corner is the Ole de Batz. It was actually completely overcast – but every now and then a ray of sunlight from the still-low morning sun would break through and glisten on the water against the light. I wanted to capture that moment in this painting.

    In these wide-angle shots at low tide, I always try to include people as a sense of scale: without them, the rocks would just look like stones

Bretagne Tag 11 – Ebbepfützen und Felsen

 

Hier habe ich mich sehr auf dieses weiche helle in der Ebbe an diesem bedeckten Tag konzentriert: Da waren kaum Kontraste, alles wirkte weichgespült.

Ich bin mir nicht sicher, was ich von dem Ergebnis halten soll: es wirkt dadurch auch irgendwie ein bisschen langweilig. Oder einfach nur ruhig?

Here, I decided to focus on the soft, pale light at low tide on this overcast day: there was barely any contrast; everything looked softly washed out.

I’m not sure what to make of the result: it does seem a bit dull, somehow. Or is it just peaceful?

Bretgane tag 10 – Wellenschaum

  

Und noch eine weitere Welle, bzw. der auslaufende Schaum einer Welle.

Ich habe versucht dieses Weiche des Schaums des herauszuarbeiten, der sich über den nassen Sand schiebt. 

Ich hatte erst noch eine Welle mit im Bild, die war von meinem Gefühl her aber zu viel: ich habe sie dann übermalt und den Schaum nach hinten auslaufen lassen (dieses Schaumnetz muss ich auch noch geknackt bekommen und als extra Motiv malen – ich finde das immer sehr ästhetisch....)

Bretgane Tag 9 – Felseninsel in der Ebbe

  

Dieses Bild malte ich gleich im Anschluss an den Blick in die Felsen. 

Zum einen kam die Sonne raus, zum anderen musste ich dann gar nicht erst los einen windgeschützen Platz zu suchen...

Und der Blick von da oben, gerade  mit der auslaufenden Ebbe war einfach zu schön.

Doch es istt unglaublich, wie schnell das Wasser verschwindet (und mit ihm mein Motiv: Die wunderschöne Spiegelung des Felsens im Wasser hatte meine Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen).

Obwohl ich für dieses Bild nur 30 Minuten gebraucht habe, war ich nicht schnell genug – ich musste mich größtenteils auf mein Gedächtnis verlassen.

Der Felsen heißt Roc'h ar Feuillans und ist am Plage des Amiets in Kerfissien:

Ich habe ihn schon sehr oft gemalt, aber meistens nur als Hintergrund.

I painted this rock island straight after the one with the view of the rocks. For one thing, the sun came out; for another, I didn’t even have to go looking for a sheltered spot...

And the view from up there, with the ebbing tide, was simply too beautiful.

But it’s incredible how quickly the water disappears (and with it my subject: the beautiful reflection of the rock in the water had caught my attention).

Although I only took 30 minutes to take this picture, I wasn’t quick enough – I had to rely largely on my memory.

Bretagne Tag 9 – Blick in die Felsen

 

Langsam sollte ich dem Wind wirklich dankbar sein:

Auch dieses Motiv habe ich nur entdeckt, weil ich hinter die Felsen klettern musste um im Lee malen zu können.

Anders als aes uf den Fotos scheint, war die Sonne meistens hinter den Wolken – weswegen die Farbigkeit dieses Bildes um einiges ungesättigter wurde.

Ich musste die Welle komplett überarbeiten: Ich malte den Schaum zu hell und leuchtend (wahrscheinlich schien da grade die Sonne) - dadurch wurde sie zu wichtig und hatte dadurch den Felsen komplett die Show gestohlen.

I really should be grateful to the wind:

I only discovered this view because I had to climb behind the rocks to paint on the leeward side.

Contrary to what the photos suggest, the sun was mostly hidden behind the clouds—which is why the colors in this painting turned out much less saturated.

I had to completely rework the wave: I painted the foam too light and bright (the sun was probably shining there at that moment)—which made it too prominent and completely stole the show from the rocks.

Bretagne Tag 8 – Felsen am Meer

Auch dieses Motiv habe ich nur Dank der Suche nach einem windgeschützen Platz gefunden: 

Ich habe mich ganz auf den Kontrast zwischen dem dunklen Schatten der Felsen und dem leuchtenden Meer konzentriert. Das kleine Boot, das in der Sonne so schön leuchtete war dann das Tüpfelchen auf dem i.

I also found this motif only because I was looking for a spot sheltered from the wind: 

I focused entirely on the contrast between the dark shadows of the rocks and the brightly shining sea. The little boat, which stood out so beautifully in the sun, was the icing on the cake.

Bretagne Tag 8 – Villa Ker Anna

 

Diese Bild ist eine Auftragsarbeit – was ich normalerweise ja gar nicht mache.

Aber das ist für 2 "Bestandskunden" die das Haus, in dem sie in der Bretagne immer wohnen als Andenken gemalt haben wollten ... so habe ich eine Ausnahme gemacht.

Vor ein paar Jahren hatte ich bereits mal für den Besitzer des Hauses gemalt, das hänge ich mal mit an:
