Nachdem ich vor ein paar Jahren auf dem Frankfurter Weihnachtsmann gemalt habe, wollte ich das nie nie wieder tun: einfach viel zu viele Menschen, alles zu eng und zu laut.
Aber der Bad Dürkheimer Weihnachtsmarkt ist soviel gemütlicher und beschaulicher, dass ich`s doch noch mal gewagt habe: es war total schön, ich habe mich mit nur netten Passanten unterhalten und die Musik war von Live-Bläsern und auch richtig angenehm.
After painting at the Frankfurt Christmas market a few years ago, I never wanted to do it again: there were simply too many people, it was too crowded and too loud.
But the Christmas market in Bad Dürkheim is so much more cozy and tranquil that I decided to give it another try: it was absolutely wonderful, I chatted with only friendly passers-by, and the music was provided by live brass players and was really pleasant.

On this dull, damp day, I didn't want to go far, but simply looked at what I could find right outside my door: the longer you observe such an unspectacular motif, the more beautiful details (especially in the color nuances) you notice: I will never be able to walk past this tree again without seeing it in this way.
I hope I can convey the smell of damp leaves and earth to you.
This painting only looks the way I painted it when it's outdoors: indoors, the values appear much too dark and lack contrast. This happens to me every now and then: although I've been painting outdoors for over 12 years, I still don't know how to solve this problem—simply making it brighter than I perceive it in front of me—that’s nearly impossible when I'm painting outdoors, baucause all the values would seem “wrong” to me.
I've been living in the beautiful Palatinate Forest for over a year now, but I've only just discovered this wonderful motif in the neighborhood: the Nonnenfelsen (Nuns' Rock).
I'll definitely paint it again: it's a great location (and within easy cycling distance).

Before all the leaves fall, I painted at the Schlangenweiher again.
I will miss the autumn colours... but I am also looking forward to the grey and brown tones of nature in hibernation... and maybe there will even be snow this winter?!

And because it was so beautiful up there in the sun, I painted another one right after that, with the view almost straight to the right.
I struggled with the composition until the very end – and then, in the final stretch, I painted the vines in the foreground after all: that solved the problem.
But by then the sun had already disappeared and it suddenly became quite cool...
Once again, the sun came out and blessed us with a very mild autumn day: I spent it in the vineyards, delighted that the vines still had leaves on them despite the wind of the last few days.
I made myself comfortable and sat down to paint the view of Bad Dürkheim through the vines glowing in the backlight.

Es hat nun mehrere Tage geregnet und sehr gewindet: ich bangte schon, ob das schöne bunte Laub wohl noch an den Bäumen hängt: und jawoll: der Wald um uns ist noch schön bunt – und die Sonne , die kurz raus kam, brachte die Farben noch mal mehr zum leuchten.
Ich Dussel hatte nur meine Malplatten vergessen, deswegen malte ich auf diesen Malblock, den Peter mir gab. Der war so stark saugend war, dass es sich anfühlte, (und auch so aussieht) als hätte ich mit Gouache Farben gemalt.
It has been raining and very windy for several days now: I was worried whether the beautiful colorful leaves would still be hanging on the trees.
And yes: the forest around us is still beautifully colorful—and the sun, which came out briefly, made the colors shine even more.
I, goofy me, had forgotten my painting boards, so I painted on this sketchpad that Peter gave me. It was so absorbent that it felt (and looked) like I was painting with gouache paints.
On the train ride back to the Palatinate, I couldn't take my eyes off the window: I had rarely seen vineyards so colorful!
On the first sunny day here, I set off on my bike and discovered a particularly beautiful vineyard whose vines glowed in every color.
I rarely mix such saturated tones... it was really fun!
And unfortunately, this is already the last painting from this year's art retreat in the Vosges.
The rain had eased off so much that I ventured out from under the covered terrace and was able to paint our beautiful accommodation once again.
Although the sun even came out briefly, it was already much colder than the previous days, so I was very happy when I spotted the smoke coming from the chimney: one of us had already finished painting and had lit the fire :-)

We had been so lucky with the weather until now: today was the first day it rained.
And even that was fine: thanks to the huge covered terrace (even with skylights!) and all the beautiful motifs around us, we were able to paint outside despite the weather. The colours were very different from the sunny days before, so that we literally saw our surroundings in a whole new light.
Obwohl ich Abends total platt war, überredete mich Blaise mich noch mal vom Kaminfeuer zu lösen und draußen eine Nocturne zu malen ... selten hat man ja so eine schöne Gelegenheit dazu.
Und jetzt bin ich auch sehr froh, dass ich mich aufgerafft habe. Wie immer wurde das Bild viel dunkler, als ich es eigentlich gemalt habe: die LED Leuchten sind so hell, dass ich alle Farben sehr dunkel mische., sie mir beim Malen aber heller erscheinen. Aber gerade bei Nocturnes ist es gut, das wirklich nur die erleuchteten Stellen zu sehen, und der Rest rembrandesque verschwindet (auch wenn ich das drum rum eigentlich gemalt hatte).

Although I was completely exhausted in the evening, Blaise persuaded me to leave the open fire and paint a nocturne outside... it's not often you get such a wonderful opportunity
And now I'm very glad that I made the effort. As always, the painting turned out much darker than I actually painted it: the LED lights are so bright that I mix all the colours very darkly, but they appear lighter to me when I'm painting. But especially with nocturnes, it's good to see only the illuminated areas, and the rest disappears in a Rembrandt-esque manner (even though I had actually painted it around them).
Weil es dort so schön war, sind wir nach vom "lost Place" wieder zurück in den Wald an den Wasserfall gefahren: Dieses mal haben wir aber am Bachlauf oberhalb davon gemalt.
Da Alfons sich so schön vor mir positioniert hatte, beschloß ich ihn zu malen - in seiner ganz typischen Arbeitshaltung. Er stand im einzigen Lichtfleck dort im Wald, ich habe ihn also noch mal extra erleuchtet :-)

Because it was so beautiful there, we drove back from the ‘lost place’ to the forest by the waterfall: This time, however, we painted by the stream above it.
Since Alfons had positioned himself so nicely in front of me, I decided to paint him – in his typical working posture. He was standing in the only patch of light in the forest, so I illuminated him even more :-)
Als wir 2 Tage zuvor vom Wasserfall heimfuhren, kamen wir an diesem Lost Place vorbei – wir hofften, dass sich dort vielleicht schöne Motive für uns finden (und nah genug dran kämen) und wurden sehr positiv überrascht: Das ehemalige Fabrik-Gelände war kaum abgesperrt und war ganz wunderbar verfallen – wir konnten uns kaum entscheiden, was wir dort malen sollten.i
Ich entschied mich für dieses komplett eingestürzte Gebäude – das war ein echte Herausforderung, dieses Zusammensackte hinzubekommen: und nun sieht das Dach aus wie eine asiatische Pagode :-)

When we were driving home from the waterfall two days earlier, we passed this lost place—we hoped that we might find some nice motifs there (and get close enough to them) and were very pleasantly surprised: the former factory site was barely cordoned off and was wonderfully dilapidated—we could hardly decide what to paint there.
I chose this completely destroyed building – it was a real challenge to get this collapsed structure right: and now the roof looks like an Asian pagoda :-)

After a long lunch break on the sunny terrace, I spent the late afternoon painting our beautiful house. I had painted the small building on the right-hand side earlier that morning.

We spent this another sunny and mild day around our house again – the painting shows the small outbuilding with the beautiful garden, where some flowers are still blooming.
This painting sums up very well the feelings I have for this place, the season (with this weather), and my wonderful painting friends: I was completely happy while painting it!
