Weihnachtsmarkt in Bad Dürkheim

 

Nachdem ich vor ein paar Jahren auf dem Frankfurter Weihnachtsmann gemalt habe, wollte ich das nie nie wieder tun: einfach viel zu viele Menschen, alles zu eng und zu laut.

Aber der Bad Dürkheimer Weihnachtsmarkt ist soviel gemütlicher und beschaulicher, dass ich`s doch noch mal gewagt habe: es war total schön, ich habe mich mit nur netten Passanten unterhalten und die Musik war von Live-Bläsern und auch richtig angenehm.

After painting at the Frankfurt Christmas market a few years ago, I never wanted to do it again: there were simply too many people, it was too crowded and too loud.

But the Christmas market in Bad Dürkheim is so much more cozy and tranquil that I decided to give it another try: it was absolutely wonderful, I chatted with only friendly passers-by, and the music was provided by live brass players and was really pleasant.

Baumwurzeln

An diesem trüben feuchten Tag wollte ich gar nicht erst weit weg sondern hab einfach geguckt, was ich direkt vor der Tür finde: je länger man so ein unspektakulären Motiv betrachtet, umso mehr schöne Details (vor allen in den Farbnuancen) fallen einem auf: ie wieder werde ich einfach so an diesem Baum vorbei gehen können.

Ich hoffe ich kann euch damit den Geruch nach feuchtem Laub und Erde vermitteln.

Dieses Bild sieht nur unter freiem Himmel so aus, wie ich es gemalt habe: die Farbwerte wirken im Haus viel zu dunkel und zu kontrastarm. Das passiert mir immer mal wieder: Obwohl ich seit über 12 Jahren draußen male, weiß ich noch immer nicht, wie ich dieses Problem lösen könnte - es einfach heller als ich es im Motiv vor mir sehe anzulegen – da kommen mir draußen beim Malen die Tonwerte alle "falsch" vor.

On this dull, damp day, I didn't want to go far, but simply looked at what I could find right outside my door: the longer you observe such an unspectacular motif, the more beautiful details (especially in the color nuances) you notice: I will never be able to walk past this tree again without seeing it in this way.

I hope I can convey the smell of damp leaves and earth to you.

This painting only looks the way I painted it when it's outdoors: indoors, the values appear much too dark and lack contrast. This happens to me every now and then: although I've been painting outdoors for over 12 years, I still don't know how to solve this problem—simply making it brighter than I perceive it in front of me—that’s nearly impossible when I'm painting outdoors, baucause all the values would seem “wrong” to me.

 

Nonnenfels bei Bad Dürkheim

 

Nun bin ich schon über 1 Jahr im wunderschönen Pfälzer Wald – doch dieses wunderschöne Motiv in der Nachbarschaft hab ich jetzt erst entdeckt: der Nonnenfelsen.

Den werd ich bestimmt wieder malen: ein großartige Location (und noch dazu in angenehmer Rad Entfernung).

I've been living in the beautiful Palatinate Forest for over a year now, but I've only just discovered this wonderful motif in the neighborhood: the Nonnenfelsen (Nuns' Rock).

I'll definitely paint it again: it's a great location (and within easy cycling distance).
