Pleinairmalerei Workshop mit und ohne Sonne

 

Heute war wieder ein Workshoptag: mein Schüler und ich fanden diesen wunderschön von hinten beleuchteten Baum, der mit seinem deutlichen Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste ein relativ einfaches Motiv war.

Nachdem wir beide einen schnelle kleine Ölskizze gemalt haben, um uns an das Motiv heranzutasten, kamen leider Wolken auf... noch bevor wir mit dem Bild fertig waren, war die Sonne dann leider weg. Hier half uns dann ein weiterer Vorteil solcher Vorab-Skizzen: wir hatten in der kleinen Pochade bereits das Licht gesetzt und festgehalten, wie der Schatten fiel. Das konnten wir dann als Spickzettel für unser Bild verwenden.

Today was another workshop day: my student and I found this beautifully backlit tree, which was a relatively easy subject with its distinct light-dark contrasts.

After we both did a quick little oil sketch to approach the subject, unfortunately clouds came up.... before we had even finished the painting, the sun had unfortunately disappeared. Here another advantage of such preliminary sketches helped us: we had already set the light in the small pochade and recorded how the shadow fell. We could then use this as a cheat sheet for our painting.

Nach der Workshopwoche wars dann auch mal wieder ganz schön einfach so zu malen – mit den Ergebnis, dass ich prompt total planlos war... das Bild fällt kompositorisch etwas auseinander. Aber Spaß hat’s gemacht :-)

After the workshop week, it was nice to just paint like that again - with the result that I promptly had no plan at all... the composition of the painting falls apart a bit. But it was fun :-)

Und dann war's auch schon der letzte Tag des Workshops.

Als Warm-Up haben wir ein paar Farben gemischt: das ist eine tolle Übung, einfach ein paar Gegenstände aus der Umgebung zu nehmen und deren Farben im Licht und im Schatten nachzumischen. Es geht dabei nämlich nicht um Farbtheorien, um richtig oder falsch, sondern viel mehr darum ein Gefühl für die eigene Palette zu entwicklen. Was macht welche Farbe...? Da muß man einfach mal rumprobieren und "abschmecken" ob der Farbton stimmt - das ist ein bisschen wie beim Kochen.

Unser Hauptmotiv des Tages war dann ein blühender Apfelbaum.

Wir haben lange drüber geredet, was wir da eigentlcih sehen, wleche Komposition sich anbieten würde... und dann ließ ich Tanya ganz in Ruhe malen, Sie sollte einfach mal probieren, ob ihr der Workshop schon was gebracht hat. 

Und was soll ich sagen! Obwohl sie jederzeit alles hätte fragen können, tat sie's nicht! 

Da habe ich mich selbst in nur 5 Tagen schon überflüssig gemacht :-)

And then it was the last day of the workshop.

As a warm-up we mixed a few colours: it's a great exercise to simply take a few objects from the environment and mix their colours in light and shadow. It's not about colour theories, about right or wrong, but much more about developing a feeling for your own palette. What does which colour do...? You just have to try it out and "taste" whether the colour tone is right - it's a bit like cooking.

Our main motif of the day was a blossoming apple tree.

We talked for a long time about what we actually saw there, which composition would be suitable... and then I let Tanya paint all alone she should just try it out, if there was a benefit from the workshop yet.

And what should I say! Although she could have asked anything at any time, she didn't! 

I made myself superfluous in only 5 days :-)

Am vorletzten Workshoptag wünschte sich Tanya, dass wir noch mehr Pochades malen - um so mehr Motive an einem Tag zu schaffen.

Wir begannen mit einer Graustufen Skizze. So eine Tonwertstudie hilft sehr dabei sein Motiv besser zu verstehen. Denn die richtige Beurteilung des Hell-Dunkelkontrasts ist ganz wesentlich beim Pleinairmalen, wichtiger noch als die eigentliche Farbigkeit.

Das 2. Bild malten wir um ein recht komplexes Motiv so stark wie möglich zu vereinfachen. Es erstaunt mich manchmal noch immer selbst, wie wenig nötig ist, um so eine Szene einzufangen.

Mit dem 3: Bild zeigte ich Tanya wie schnell man malen kann, wenn man eine dunkle grundierte Leinwand hat auf die man dann nur noch das Licht malen muss.Perfekt um die letzten Sonnenstrahlen des Tages einzufangen.

Es kam so zwar kein einziges "richtiges" Bild an dem Tag raus, dafür hat Tanya aber ganz viele Fragen stellen können und ich dadurch auch ganz viel erklären....

On the third day of the workshop, Tanya wanted to paint more pochades - to create more motifs in one day.

We started with a greyscale sketch. Such a tone value study helps a lot to understand the motif better. The correct assessment of the light-dark contrast is essential for plein air painting, even more important than the actual colour.

We painted the 2nd sketch to simplify a rather complex motif as much as possible. It still amazes me sometimes how little is needed to capture such a scene.

With the 3rd painting I showed Tanya how fast you can paint when you have a dark primed canvas on which you only have to paint the light. Perfect for catching the last rays of the day.

We didn't get a single "real" picture that day, but Tanya was able to ask a lot of questions and I was able to explain a lot to her....

Den 3. Tag des Workshops verbrachten wir am See im Frankfurter Ostpark: das Thema war Spiegelungen malen.

Vorab malten wir eine kleine schnelle Pochade... und während wir noch diskutierten, ob wir das Motiv auch in groß malen sollten, zog es immer mehr zu und ein heftiges Gewitter zog über uns hinweg. Wir waren zwar mit Schirmen an unseren Staffeleien ganz gut equipped, beschlossen aber abzuwarten, wie sich das Wetter entwickelte - und tatsächlich: als die Sonne dann endlich rauskam tauchte sie alles in ein wunderschönes warmes Licht, so dass wir dann entschieden die Trauerweide zu malen.

Hier konnte ich schön zeigen, wie ich so eine Spiegelung mit möglichst nassen Farben male, so dass sie schön ineinander gezogen und unscharf wird.

We spent the 3rd day of the workshop at the lake in Frankfurt's Ostpark: the theme was painting reflections.

First we painted a quick little pochade... and while we were still discussing whether we should paint the motif in large size, it became more and more overcast and a heavy thunderstorm passed over us. We were well equipped with umbrellas at our easels, but decided to wait and see how the weather developed - and indeed: when the sun finally came out, it coloured everything in a beautiful warm light, so that we decided to paint the weeping willow.

Here I was able to show nicely how I paint such a reflection with colours that are as wet as possible, so that they are nicely drawn into each other and blurred.

Den 2. Tag haben wir damit begonnen, dass wir ein paar kleinen Ölskizzen gemalt haben. Solche Pochades helfen sich auf das Wesentliche zu beschränken. Außerdem kann man damit schön den Bildanfang üben und auch das Mischen fällt mit den nur kleinen Farbmengen leichter.

Danach malten wir das Hauptmotiv: ein Closeup von einem Gebüsch.

Ich wollte damit zum einen zeigen wie schön man mit den deckenden Ölfarben Licht und Schatten setzen kann und wie toll lasierende Farben (hier im Hintergrund) leuchten. Zum anderen war es hier nicht so wichtig besonders exakt zu malen, das hilft dabei seinen Pinsel lockerer einzusetzen, malerischer zu werden.

 

Das war ein richtig schöner sonniger Maltag!

 

We started the second day by painting a few small oil sketches. Such pochades help to limit oneself to the essentials. In addition, you can practise the beginning of the painting and mixing is easier with only small amounts of colour.

Then we painted the main motif: a close-up of a bush.

On the one hand, I wanted to show how beautifully you can set light and shadows with opaque oil colours and how wonderfully transparent colours shine. On the other hand, it was not so important to paint very precisely, it helps to use the brush more loosely, to become more painterly.

 

It was a really nice sunny day of painting!

Das war das erste Motiv des fünftägigen Workshops, den ich diese Woche geben werde.

Ich habe mit einer "Demo" angefangen, um einfach mal zu zeigen wie ich so male, wie ich mein Bild aufbaue, was ich mir dabei so denke...

Das Wetter war durchwachsen, so suchten wir uns ein Motiv, das unabhängig vom Licht funktionierte: eine weite Landschaft, mit nicht zu vielen Details.

Der Himmel wurde während des Malens immer dramatischer, und dadurch im Motiv auch immer wichtiger - eigentlich ist so ein Wolkenhimmel, der sich so schnell verändert, kein gutes Motiv für den Anfang... doch Tanya, meine Schülerin, hat ganz tapfer durchgehalten und auf Anhieb richtig gute Wolken hinbekommen...!

Das war schon mal ein guter Einstieg in die Woche!

Pleinairmalerei Workshop

This was the first motif of the five-day workshop I will give this week.

I started with a "demo", just to show how I paint, how I build up my painting, what I think about...

The weather was mixed, so we looked for a motif that worked regardless of the light: a wide landscape, with not too many details.

The sky became more and more dramatic during the painting, and thus more and more important in the motif - actually, such a cloudy sky, which changes so quickly, is not a good motif for the beginning... but Tanya, my student, held out very bravely and got really good clouds right away...!

That was a good start to the week!

Pleinairmalerei Workshop "Sonnenflecken"

Heute habe ich einen weiteren Workshop gegeben - und die Schülerin hatte sich explizit gewünscht von mir zu lernen, wie ich meine Sonnenflecken male. Und dann schien die Sonne nicht ...!

Da erinnerte ich mich an mein "Sonnemotiv" von letzter Woche:
Das blühende Scharbockskraut zauberte so einen schöne Kontrast trotz fehlender Sonne, dass ich so trotzdem demonstrieren konnte wie ich solche leuchtenden "Sonnenflecken" male.

Leider wurden wir beide mit unserem Bild nicht fertig - die Erklärungen beim Malen kosten eben doch immer auch Zeit und es wurde uns beiden einfach zu kalt (wir haben die Bilder beide jeweils  zu Hause beendet).

Today I gave another workshop - and the student had explicitly wanted to learn from me how to paint my sunspots. And then the sun didn't shine ...!

That's when I remembered my "sunny motif" from last week:

The flowering lesser celandine conjured up such a beautiful contrast despite the lack of sun, that I was able to demonstrate how I paint such bright "sunspots" anyway.

Unfortunately, we both didn't finish our painting - the explanations while painting always take time and it was just too cold for both of us (we both finished the paintings at home).

Heute habe ich bei etwas widrigem Wetter einen Workshop gegeben, der zwar draußen stattgefunden hat, wir aber nicht malten, was wir gesehen haben, sondern nur eines meiner Bilder gemeinsam abgemalt haben. Es war nämlich eine allererste Einführung in die Ölmalerei - wenn man das noch nie gemacht hat, ist man damit schon gut beschäftigt. Sich dann auch noch beeilen zu müssen, um die Landschaft zu malen, bevor sich das Licht zu sehr ändert wäre dann ziemlich viel auf einmal...

Meine Schülerin war sehr entspannt und hat meine Erklärungen regelrecht aufgesaugt: Oben seht ihr ihr allererstes Ölbild überhaupt! Es ist fast schon eine perfekte Kopie meiner (kleinen) Vorlage, oder?

Und beim nächsten mal, wenn sie sich mit den Ölfarben schon vertrauter gemacht hat, zeige ich ihr dann das Pleinairmalen... da freu ich mich schon drauf, denn das ist ja, was ich gerne weitergeben will:

Mal einfach draußen!

Today I gave a workshop in divers weather conditions, which took place outside, but we didn't paint what we saw, we just painted one of my pictures together. It was, in fact, a very first introduction to oil painting - if you've never done it before, you're already well into it. Then to have to hurry to paint the landscape before the light changes too much would be quite a lot at once....

My pupil was very relaxed and really absorbed my explanations: above you can see her very first oil painting ever! It's almost a perfect copy of my (small) template, isn't it?

And next time, when she is more familiar with oil paints, I will show her how to paint in plein air...

Blütenteppich auf dem Heiligenstockgelände

 

Als ich heute losgeradelt bin, war es viel wärmer als ich dachte... fast wurde es mir auf dem Rad ein bisschen zu warm.

Die Sonne ließ sich allerdings nicht blicken, deswegen freute ich mich sehr als ich dieses "sonnige" Motiv entdeckte: Das blühende Scharbockskraut sah fast wie Sonnenflecken auf dem Boden aus.

Doch während ich malte, zog es immer weiter zu, ein wirklich frostiger Wind kam auf und es fing an zu regnen. Zum Glück war ich wenigstens gegen letzteres gewappnet, den Schirm habe ich kurzerhand in den Baum gehängt... nur die Kälte, die kroch von Minute zu Minute mehr in mich herein - bis ich als ich fertig war, zitternd mit klammen Händen zusammen packte.

Aber: das Bild wars' wert!

Auf dem Foto sieht es gar nicht mehr so schön gelb aus, was daran liegt, dass die Blüten sich im Regen alles zusammengeklappt haben.

When I started today, it was much warmer than I thought... It was almost a bit too warm for me on the bike.

The sun didn't show itself, so I was very happy when I discovered this "sunny" motif: the flowering lesser celandine almost looked like sun spots on the ground.

But while I was painting, the weather became more and more cloudy, a really frosty wind came up and it started to rain. Fortunately, I was at least prepared for the rain, I hung the umbrella in the tree .... Only the cold crept into me more and more with every minute - until I packed up shivering with clammy hands when I was done.

But the result was worth it!

In the photo it doesn't look so nice and yellow anymore, which is because the flowers have all folded up in the rain.

Frühlingsblumen

Da bei dem schönen Wetter über die Osterfeiertag trotz Corona draußen sehr viel los ist, beschloss ich heute zuhause zu bleiben. Ich habe dann einfach den Blumenkasten vor meinem Fenster gemalt. Das macht total Spaß, mal alle Farben so gesättigt und pur aus der Tube benutzen zu können!

Since there is a lot going on outside in the beautiful weather over the Easter holiday, despite Covid, I decided to stay at home today. I simply painted the flower box in front of my window. It's great fun to be able to use all the colours so saturated and pure from the tube!

Es ist ein bisschen schade, dass ich so gar nie weiß, welche Blüten genau ich da eigentlich gerade male. Bei Obstbäumen kenne ich mich aus, aber diese frühblühenden Sträucher kenne ich nicht. ich werde mir genau diesen Strauch im Sommer noch mal ansehen, was aus den Blüten geworden ist...

Bei dem Bild habe ich festgestellt, wie locker ich die Blüten malen kann, und doch ins Detail dabei gehen kann. Je weniger häufig ich über s o eine Blüte noch mal drüber malen, um so fluffiger wirkt sie.

It's a bit of a shame that I never know exactly which flowers I'm painting. I know my way around fruit trees, but I don't know these early-flowering shrubs. I'll have another look at this particular shrub in the summer to see how the flowers have turned out...

With this painting I noticed how loosely I can paint the flowers and still go into detail. The less often I paint over a petal again, the fluffier it looks.
