Ostsee Pleinair Festival Sonnenuntergang 1

Am Ende meines ersten Maltags in Kühlungsborn gönnte ich mir ein Bierchen auf der Sohle am Hafen, mit Blick auf den Sonnenuntergang hinter der Seebrücke.

Und obwohl ich nach den 3 Bildern des Tages keine Leinwand mehr übrig hatte, wollte ich ihn unbedingt malen, so schön war er! 

Ich habe das Bild dann kurzerhand auf das Brett gemalt, auf dem ich sonst meine Leinwände befestige...

At the end of my first day of painting in Kühlungsborn, I rewarded myself with a beer on the pier at the harbour, with a view of the sunset.

And although I had no canvas left after the 3 paintings of the day, I really wanted to paint it, it was so beautiful! 

So I painted it on the board on which I usually attach my canvases...

 

Ostsee Pleinair Festival Schloss am Meer

Dieses Bild zeigt das Schloss am Meer - wieder musste ich nur ein paar Schritte gehen um in meinem Rücken dieses schöne Motiv im Gegenlicht zu entdecken.

Um meinen ersten Eindruck blinzelnd gegen die Sonne einzufangen, habe ich das Gebäude als große Silhouette angelegt, in dem ich auf einer dunkel grundierten Malplatte nur die Negativform des Himmels und des Strandes malte.

Doch je länger ich das Motiv beguckte, umso mehr Detail sind mir (leider) aufgefallen, so daß ich dann doch viel zu viele davon malte...

Aber:

ich bin sehr froh dass ich Sandra beim Malen und Eva beim Zeichnen auf dem Bild ergänzte, vor allem, dass ich nicht, wie so oft, beim Einfügen von Menschen das Bild auf der Zielgeraden noch kaputt malte.

Und dann musste ich mich auch sehr beeilen um das Bild noch rechtzeitig im Festivalbüro abzugeben, da die Abgabe auf allerallerspätestens sechs Uhr begrenzt war...!

This painting shows the Schloss am Meer - again I only had to walk a few steps to discover this beautiful motif backlit in my back.

To capture my first impression squinting against the sun, I created the building as a large silhouette by painting only the negative shape of the sky and the beach on a dark primed panel.

But the longer I looked at the motif, the more details I noticed (unfortunately), so that I ended up painting far too many of them...

But:

I am very glad that I add Sandra while painting and Eva while drawing on the painting, especially that I did not, as so often happens, destroy the painting on the final straight when adding people.

And then I had to hurry to get the painting to the festival office in time, as the deadline was six o'clock at the latest...!

 

Ostsee Pleinair Festival Felsen

 

Für das 2. Bild des Tages bin ich nur ein paar Schritte weiter gegangen:

Felsen hab ich in der Bretagne schon geübt, aber ein Kürzel für die Buhnen zu finden, ohne jeden Pfahl einzeln zu malen fand ich überraschend kniffelig.

Es ist zu Beginn an einer neuen Location immer wieder spannend sich an die neue Farbwelt  heranzutasten:

ich hätte zB nie gedacht, dass die Ostsee so türkis sein kann!

For the second painting of the day, I only went a few steps further:

I've already exercised painting rocks in Brittany, but I found it surprisingly tricky to find an abbreviation for the groynes without painting each pile individually.

At the beginning at a new location it is always exciting to get used to the new world of colours:

I would never have thought, for example, that the Baltic Sea could be so turquoise!

Endlich: Ich bin beim Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn!

Nachdem ich mich das erste mal für Mai 2020 angemeldet hatte, musste ich lange 2 Jahre warten, bis es endlich stattfinden konnte...

Corona bedingt habe ich mich ich zwar noch immer nicht richtig wohl gefühlt mit all den Menschen um mich herum (für die Touristen dort ist die Pandemie wohl endgültig vorbei), da aber fast alles draußen war und ich die Gastronomie gemieden habe und alleine in einer Ferienwohnung wohnte, habe ich mich mit der Situation arrangieren können.

Schon die Anreise habe ich mir verschönert:

Da ich mit dem Zug anreiste und nicht 4x umsteigen wollte, habe ich die letzten beiden Züge ausgelassen und bin ab Rostock mit dem Rad nach Kühlungsborn gefahren . das hat super geklappt das Rad bis dort im Zug mitzunehmen - und vor Ort ist es eh super ein Rad zu haben... das werde ich auf jeden fall wieder so machen (bei 5 Tagen hält sich ja auch das Gepäck in Grenzen).

Das ist das erste Bild, das ich vor Ort malte, gleich am Strand gegenüber der Kunsthalle, der Homebase des Festivals.

Der Event ist so organisiert, dass man morgens seine Malplatten abstempeln lässt, die man dann über den tag bemalt und Abends bis allerspätestens (!) 18 Uhr in der Kunsthalle abgibt. Der Grund dahinter ist, dass die Bilder alle in einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung gezeigt werden 8was ich total super finde!) und das eine Jury die 3 besten Bilder prämiert (was ich bei Malerei ein bisschen strange finden, gibt es da ein besser oder am bestesten?).

Und genau wegen diese Preisvergabe wollen die Veranstalter wohl verhindern, das wer seine Bilder nicht am gleichen Tag vor Ort malt, um die Wettbewerbsbedingungen für alle fair zu gestalten.

Das war schön dort gemeinsam zu malen und zu quatschen!

Und: im Bild hinten sitzt Rita im Schatten der Düne und zeichnet die Boote, die neben uns standen...

Finally: I am at the Ostsee Pleinair Festival in Kühlungsborn!

After I had registered the first time for May 2020, I had to wait a long 2 years until it could finally take place...

Due to Corona, I still didn't really feel comfortable with all the people around me (for the tourists there, the pandemic is probably finally over), but since almost everything was outside and I avoided the gastronomy and lived alone in a holiday flat, I was able to come to terms with the situation.

I already embellished my journey:

As I travelled by train and didn't want to change trains 4 times, I skipped the last two trains and cycled from Rostock to Kühlungsborn. It worked out great to take the bike with me on the train to Kühlungsborn - and it's great to have a bike on site anyway... I'll definitely do it that way again (with 5 days, the luggage is also limited).

This is the first picture I painted on site, right on the beach in front of the Kunsthalle, the homebase of the festival.

The event is organised in such a way that you have your painting plates stamped in the morning, which you then paint during the day and return to the Kunsthalle in the evening by 6 pm at the latest (!). The reason behind this is that the paintings are all shown in a joint exhibition (which I think is great!) and that a jury awards prizes to the 3 best paintings (which I find a bit strange in painting, is there a better or best?).

And precisely because of this awarding of prizes, the organisers probably want to prevent anyone from painting their paintings on site on the same day, in order to make the competition conditions fair for everyone.

It was nice to paint and chat there together!

And: in the picture in the back Rita is sitting in the shade of the dune and drawing the boats that were standing next to us...

Pleinairmalerei Workshop

 

Dieses Bild habe ich gestern als Demo meines Pleinairmalerei Workshops gemalt.

Wegen des unsteten Wetters waren wir darauf angewiesen in der Nähe eines Daches zu bleiben und hatten deswegen keine so große Auswahl beim Motiv... zumal auch durch das trübe Licht sehr wenig Kontraste zu sehen waren, die das Malen sonst doch sehr erleichtern.

Meine beiden Schüler*innen waren sehr tapfer und haben trotz der Kälte und des Windes fast 5 Stunden den Elementen (und dem Material) getrotzt :-)

I painted this one as a demo of my plein air painting workshop.

Because of the unsteady weather we had to stay close to a roof and therefore didn't have such a wide choice of motifs... especially as the dull light meant that there was very little contrast to be seen, which otherwise makes painting much more easy.

My two students were very tough and braved the elements (and the material) for almost 5 hours despite the cold and the wind :-)

Löwenzahn

 

 

Wie jedes Frühjahr habe ich Löwenzahn gemalt.

Aber anders als in den letzten jähren, wo ich regelrecht danach suchen musste ist der dieses Jahr geradezu explodiert (die Gänseblümchen übrigens auch).

Keine Ahnung, woran das liegt - aber schön isses :-)

Like every spring I have painted dandelions.

But unlike the last few years, where I had to look for it this year they just exploded (the daisies by the way also).

No idea why - but it's beautiful :-)

Taunusblick

Heute bin ich mit Sibylle Liehnhardt in den Taunus gefahren und dort habe wir den Blick vom Feldberg zur Burgruine Oberreifenberg gemalt.

Das war sehr schön dort oben zu sitzen, zusammen zu malen und zu quatschen - auch wenn es dort oben noch ganz schön kühl war (und tatsächlich noch fast kein Frühling, die Bäume hatten alle noch keine Blätter!)

Today I drove me with Sibylle Liehnhardt ind en Taunus and there we painted the view from the Feldberg to the castle ruins Oberreifenberg.

That was very nice to sit up there, to paint together and to chat - even if it was still quite cool up there (and actually almost no spring, the trees all had no leaves yet!).

Das schöne Wetter hat mich gleich wieder rausgelockt:

nördlich von Frankfurt ich fand diesem schönen Blick über die Frühlingslandschaft, im Hintergrund sieht man den Taunus mit Feldberg.

Eigentlich mag ich dieses quietschige Gelb von Raps nicht, aber Rapsfelder zu malen macht dann doch immer viel Spaß.

Das einzig störende war das ständige Brummen des Traktors, aber ohne den gäbe es ja gar keine Rapsfelder :)

Dafür habe ich ihn dann auch inklusive Staubwolke ins Bild gemalt.

The beautiful weather has lured me right back out:

North of Frankfurt I found this beautiful view over the spring landscape, in the background you can see the Taunus with Feldberg.

Actually, I do not like this squeaky yellow of rape, but rape fields to paint then but always a lot of fun.

The only annoying was the constant hum of the tractor, but without it there wouldn't be any rapeseed fields :)

So I have painted it in the painting also including the dust cloud.
