Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition 2025

 

Die Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) hat eines meiner Pleinairbilder, das ich in der Bretagne malte für seine jährliche Ausstellung in den Mall Gelleries in London ausgewählt! ich war totally overwhelmed, seit ich es erfahren habe (Anfang August) und endlich konnte ich nach London fahren um die Ausstellung zu besuchen und ein paar meiner englischen Instagram Freunde persönlich kennenzulernen. 

Das ist so eine grooooße Ehre dass mein Bild dort zwischen all den großartigen Bilder der noch grußartigeren Maler*innen dort hängen durfte: unglaublich, wie groß die Qualität der dort ausgestellten Bilder ist.

Um euch selbst ein Bild zu machen könnt ihr alle Bilder auf der Website der Mall Galeries sehen (meins ist das Bild Nr 280).

Da ich dann schon mal in da war, habe ich natürlich auch dort gemalt:

The Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) selected one of my plein air paintings, which I painted in Brittany, for its annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London! I have been totally overwhelmed since I was informed (at the beginning of August) and finally I was able to travel to London to visit the exhibition and meet some of my English Instagram friends in person. 

It is such a huge honour that my painting was chosen to hang there among all the other magnificent paintings by even more magnificent artists: it's incredible how high the quality of the paintings on show is.

To get an idea for yourselves, you can see all the paintings on the Mall Galeries website (mine is painting no. 280).

Since I was there anyway, I of course painted there too:

Birken

 

Diese Birken stehen ebenfalls im kleine Eppental – die habe ich eigentlich nur gemalt, da sie in der einen Ecke des Tals stehen, die auch Nachmittags noch Sonne hat.

Dafür waren sie aber erstaunlich schönes Motiv: die Rinde mit ihrem neutralen weiß reflektiert alle Farben der Umgebung: das machte Spaß da ganz genau hinzugucken...

These birch trees are also located in the small Eppental valley – I only painted them because they stand in the one corner of the valley that still gets sun in the afternoon.

But they made for an amazingly beautiful motif: the bark, with its neutral white colour, reflects all the colours of the surroundings. It was fun to look at them closely...

Eppental im Pfälzer Wald im Sommer

Heute bin ich zum Malen im Wald geblieben: das ist eines meiner Lieblingsmotive hier im Pfälzer Wald: die Wiese im kleinen Eppental.

Es ist total schön, wie sich die Farben und das Licht mit den Jahreszeiten ändern: jetzt fehlt nur noch ein Winterbild im Schnee und die Reihe ist komplett.

Today I stayed in the forest to paint: this is one of my favourite motifs here in the Palatinate Forest: the meadow in the little Eppental valley.

It's absolutely beautiful how the colours and light change with the seasons: now all I need is a winter picture in the snow and the series will be complete.

 

Pfälzer Weinberge Blick

Das war das 2 Bild des Tages: der Weg in den Pfälzer Weinbergen in die andere Richtung. Das malte ich in nur 35 Minuten, ich glaube der Tag war so ein perfekter Mal-Tag für mich: der komplette Malprozess war ganz leicht und locker (und dann auch noch sooo schönes Wetter)!

That was the second painting of the day: the path through the Palatinate vineyards in the other direction. I painted it in just 35 minutes. I think it was just the perfect day for painting: the whole process was really easy and relaxed (and the weather was so beautiful too)!

 

Weg in den Pfälzer Weinbergen

 

An diesem wunderschöne Spätsommertag zog es mich raus aus dem Wald in die Weinberge bei Bad Dürkheim: Manchmal malt sich ein Bild fast von alleine – das hier war sei eins.

Von Anfang an hatte ich einen Plan, und hab das Bild ganz fokussiert ohne Umwege in 50 Minuten gemalt. Es war, als würde mir die Ölfarbe aus dem Pinsel fließen...

So ein Male-Glück: da habe ich mich im Anschluß einfach um 180 Grad gedreht und gleich ein 2. gemalt ....

Malprozess

On this beautiful late summer day, I was drawn out of the forest and into the sunny vineyards near Bad Dürkheim: Sometimes a painting almost paints itself—this was one of those times.

I had a plan from the start and painted this piece with complete focus in 50 minutes without any unnecessary detours. It was as if the oil paint was flowing from my brush...

Such painting bliss: afterwards, I simply turned around 180 degrees and painted a second one....

Engelskulptur Hauptfriedhof

 

Dieses Motiv war mal was ganz anderes: Zwar habe auf dem Frankfurter Hauptfriedhof schon öfter gemacht, aber noch nie einen Engel.

Den wollte ich unbedingt malen, weil er so einen schönen Glow im Licht hatte – da aber klar war, dass die Sonne wahrscheinlich so schnell wandert, dass der bald weg sein würde, musste ich mich mal wieder sehr beeilen.

 Ich habe deswegen den Engel zuerst angelegt (in die feuchte Ölfarbe der Untermalung geschabt) und das Licht auf dem Boden gemalt. So konnte ich den Hintergrund dann etwas entspannter angehen (der Schatten blieb ja relativ konstant).

Malprozess

This motif was something completely different: I had often painted at Frankfurt's main cemetery, but never an angel.

I really wanted to paint it because it had such a beautiful glow in the light—but since it was clear that the sun would probably move so quickly that it would soon be gone, I had to hurry once again.

So I started by sketching the angel (scraping it into the wet oil paint of the underpainting) and painting the light on the ground. That way, I could take a more relaxed approach to the background (the shadow remained relatively constant).

Abendlicht am Ostparkweiher

Das ist das Bild, dass ich noch im Anschluß an den Workshop am Ostpark Weiher unbedingt malen musste:

Das Licht wurde immer immer schöner – und ich war zwar ein bisschen erschöpft, aber das Malzeug war ja schon da und es wäre eine Schande gewesen, dieses Hammer Licht nicht zu malen.

Ich hab ganz schnell und zügig gemalt, ca 40 Minuten, damit ich das Licht erwische (und ich auch  nicht noch länger stehen wollte). Das tat dem Bild ganz gut, daß ich einfach aufhörte, bevor ich zu viel malen konnte.

The light was getting better and better – and although I was a bit tired, my painting stuff was already there and it would have been a shame not to paint this amazing light.

I painted very quickly, in about 40 minutes, so that I could capture the light (and also because I didn't want to stand there any longer). It was good for the painting that I stopped before I could paint too much.

 

Pleinairmalerei Workshop in Frankfurt

Hier sind ein paar Eindrücke eines 2 tägigigen Workshops, den ich in Frankfurt gegeben habe:

Ich hatte 2 sehr motivierte, und wie sich heraustellte richtig gute Schülern, eine ganz aus dem Norden, eine kam ganz aus dem Süden. wir drei hatten zusammen richtig viel Spaß.

Den ersten Tag verbrachten wir im Günthersburgpark (mit einen kurzem Regenschauer, deswegen in der Nähe eines Daches und nicht ganz so frei in der Motivwahl).

Der 2 Tag war fast schon schönes Wetter und wir malten zusammen am Ostparkweiher.

Wasser im Workshop zu malen ist toll für Anfänger: das Erfolgserlebnis ist fast schon garantiert, denn um Spiegelungen zu malen gibt es ganz einfache Tricks, die ich sehr gerne zeige - und eigentlich immer zum Erfolg führen.

Das wunderschöne Licht, das wir beim Abschlussfoto hatten, hat mich so begeistert, dass ich es im Anschluss an den Workshop sofort malen musste –> s. nächsten Post.

kleine Ölskizzen

Here are a few impressions from a two-day workshop I gave in Frankfurt:

I had two very motivated students who turned out to be really good, one from the north and one from the south. The three of us had a lot of fun together.

We spent the first day in Günthersburgpark (with a brief rain shower, so we stayed near a roof and weren't quite as free in our choice of motifs).

The weather was almost nice on the second day, and we painted together at Ostparkweiher.

Painting water in a workshop is great for beginners: success is almost guaranteed because there are some very simple tricks for painting reflections that I always enjoy showing—and they almost always lead to success.
