Contis Plage – Übersicht 2022

 

Das sind die Bilder, die ich in den letzten 2 Wochen an der französischen Atlantikküste bei Contis Plage gemalt habe.

Der Atlantik war gut zu uns dieses Jahr: die Welle waren toll zum Gucken (aber auch immer so, dass man sich noch reinwagen konnte) und das Wetter hat auch super mitgespielt! Natürlich gab es wieder viel zu viele Motive, die ungemalt blieben (vor allem die viele wunderschöne Szenerien im Hinterland... doch es zog mich dann doch immer wieder ans Meer vor).

 These are the paintings I did during the last 2 weeks on the French Atlantic coast at Contis Plage.

The Atlantic was good to us this year: the waves were great to look at (but also always in such a way that you could still venture in) and the weather was also great! Of course, there were far too many motifs that remained unpainted (especially the many beautiful sceneries in the hinterland...). but I was always drawn back to the sea).

Contis Plage – Wellenreiter

Und dann war da leider schon der letzte Tag am Atlantik, der uns den Abschied mit trüben Regenwetter etwas erleichterte... Schön, dass ich wegen des Wetters selbst am Hauptstrand des Cap de l'Homy fast ganz alleine war – die einzigen die dem Wetter außer mir trotzten waren die Surfer. Die ich dann auch gleich malte :-)

Total schön, wie die Farbigkeit sich durch das Wetter komplett änderte!

And then, unfortunately, there was the last day on the Atlantic, which made it a little easier to say goodbye with dreary rainy weather... It was nice that I was almost completely alone on the main beach of Cap de l'Homy because of the weather - the only ones who braved the weather apart from me were the surfers. I painted them right away :-)

Contis Plage - Brandung

Auch heute krachten und donnerten die Wellen wieder an Land und ich habe versucht dieses schaumige Weiße, dass den Strand hochreckt einzufangen.... und wurde natürlich mal wieder sehr naß :-)

Today the waves crashed and thundered ashore again and I tried to capture this foamy white that licks up the beach.... and of course I got very wet again :-)

Contis Plage – Morgenlicht im Garten

Diese Bild habe ich noch vorm Kaffe gemalt, weil das Morgenlicht so wunderschön auf das Gras schien... Das ist ein kleines (24 x 18 cm) , damit ich schnell genug malen konnte, bevor das Licht sich zu sehr verändert hat. 

Schön, wenn der Tag schon so los geht .. :-)

I painted this before I had my coffee, because the morning light was shining so beautifully on the grass... This is a small one (24 x 18 cm) so that I could paint quickly enough before the light changed too much. 

Nice when the day already starts like this ... :-)

Contis Plage – Düne

 

Heute war es so windig, dass ich mir ein sicheres Plätzchen in den Dünen gesucht habe – außerdem sind Dünen eins meiner Lieblingsmotive :-)

Immer wieder kämpfe ich ein bisschen mit der Darstellung des Dünengrases, versuche nicht überall jeden einzelnen Halm zu malen, aber auch nicht zu flächig zu werden.

Today it was so windy that I looked for a safe spot in the dunes - besides, dunes are one of my favourite motifs :-)

Again and again I struggle a bit with the depiction of the dune grass, trying not to paint every single stalk everywhere, but also not to become too flat.

Contis Plage – Treibholz am Strand

 

Solches Treibholz wollte ich schon immer mal malen:
Das neutral graue ausgeblichene glatte Holz reflektiert sowohl das Blau des Himmels, als auch ganz wunderschön das warms Bouncelight des gelbliches Sandes.

Das hat richtig Spaß gemacht, auch wenn ich gegen Ende dann doch viel zu detailliert wurde...

I have always wanted to paint driftwood like this:

The neutral grey faded smooth wood reflects both the blue of the sky and the warm bounce light of the yellowish sand.

This was really fun, even if I got way too detailed towards the end...

Contis Plage - noch eine Welle

.. und weil die Wellen immer noch jeden Tag aufs neue so wunderschön sind - musste ich gleich noch ein malen. Ich bin total fasziniert von den Farben: wie die Wellen von hinten nach vorne von Blau über Türkis ins Grüne changieren, bis das gelbe des Sandes sich ganz reinmischt... 

... and because the waves are still so beautiful every day - I had to paint another one right away. I am totally fascinated by the colours: how the waves change from blue to turquoise to green from the back to the front, until the yellow of the sand blends in completely... 

Contis Plage – Strandtag

... und wieder ein wunderschöner Strandtag mit tollen Wellen - die Menschen habe ich auch hier vor allem als Masstab ergänzt.

Ab nachmittags glitzert die Sonne dann immer auf dem Meer, das verändert das Motiv jedes mal sehr (und wird deswegen von mir beim Malen ignoriert :-)

... and another beautiful beach day with great waves - I added the people here, too, mainly as a scale.

From the afternoon on, the sun always glitters on the sea, which changes the motif very much every time (and is therefore ignored by me when painting :-)

Contis Plage – Spiegelung am Courantufer

Diese Spiegelung am Ufer des Courant zu malen, war ein ziemliche Herausforderung:

Nicht nur da das Licht sich mit Sonne und Wolken dauernd änderte, auch der Wasserstand fiel recht zügig wegen der Ebbe.
Und dann kam immer mal wieder ein Brise, die die wunderschöne Spiegelung zerstörte...

Aber das Wesentliche, das, warum ich das Motiv unbedingt malen wollte – dieser Verlauf vom Grün, über Orange ins Gelb im flachwerdenden Uferwasser – das hab ich!

Painting this reflection on the banks of the Courant was quite a challenge:

Not only did the light change constantly with the sun and the clouds, but the water level dropped quite rapidly because of the low tide. 

And then every now and then there was a breeze that destroyed the beautiful reflection...

But the essence, the reason why I really wanted to paint the motif - this transition from green to orange to yellow in the shallowing shore water - that's what I got!

 

Contis Plage – Ölskizzen Tageszeiten am Courant

 Das ist der Blick aus "unserem" Garten auf den Courant in Contis Plage.

Als ich am Morgen den Nebel sah, wollte ich ihn unbedingt malen – wußte aber, dass ich mich sehr beeilen muss.

Deshalb entschied ich mich eine kleine schnelle Ölskizze zu machen.

Das erste Bild malte ich noch vorm Kaffe im Morgennebel, das zweite dann Mittags, bevor wir an den Strand sind.

Das Bild mit dem goldenen Licht der flach stehenden Sonne malte ich dann kurz vorm Abendessen, und das letzte dann nach Sonnenuntergang, bis es zu dunkel wurde, um noch irgendwas sehen zu können.

An jeder Pochade (Ölskizze) malte ich zwischen 25 und 40 Minuten.

Das beste an diesem Motiv, neben dem Blick auf das Wasser mit Spiegelung fand ich das kleine Boot, was so einen schönen roten Farbakzent setzt!

 This is the view from "our" garden of the Courant in Contis Plage.

When I saw the mist in the morning, I really wanted to paint it - but knew I had to hurry a lot.

So I decided to do a quick little oil sketch.

I painted the first painting before coffee in the morning mist, the second at noon before we went to the beach.

I painted the painting with the golden light of the flat sun just before dinner, and the last one after sunset, until it was too dark to see anything.

I painted each pochade (oil sketch) for between 25 and 40 minutes.

The best thing about this motif, apart from the view of the water with reflection, was the small boat, which adds such a beautiful red colour accent!

Contis Plage – Ebbepfützen mit Blick auf Contis

Das ist der Blick auf Contis Plage, gemalt bei Ebbe...
Wie so oft malte ich etwas zu lange und das Wasser der einsetzenden Flut hat mich wieder mal erwischt :-)

Diesen Blick habe ich über die Jahre immer mal wieder gemalt, ich hänge die Übersicht mal an...
Ich mag mein erstens von 2012 noch immer sehr, auch wenn ich heute ganz anders male (Ich glaube, so könnte ich das heute auch gar nicht mehr malen, selbst wenn ich wollte!).

This is the view of Conti's plague, painted at low tide...

As so often, I painted a little too long and the water of the incoming tide got me again :-)

I have painted this view from time to time over the years, so I'll attach the overview...

I still like my first one from 2012 very much, even though I paint quite differently today (I don't think I could paint it like that any more, even if I wanted to!).

Contis Plage – Wolken und Weite

Auch wenn die Spaziergänger im Bild nur ganz klein sind, sind sie doch ganz wichtig für das Bild, um einen Maßstab zu haben und die Weite dort an der französischen Atlantikküste zeigen zu können.

Das Format ist 30 x 20 cm, die Menschen und der Hund sind also wirklich nur winzige Kleckse...
 

Even though the walkers in the painting are very small, they are very important for the painting to have a scale and to be able to show the vastness there on the French Atlantic coast.

The format is 30 x 20 cm, so the people and the dog are really only tiny blobs...

Contis Plage – le Courant

Als ich anfing dieses Motiv zu malen, war es bedeckt - und während ich malte fing es sogar kurz an zu regnen...diese Stimmung habe ich versucht einzufangen. Da die Sonne aber in der letzten halben Stund rauskam, war es sehr schwierig diese auf der Zielgeraden nicht doch noch mit ins Bild zu malen... man darf dann eigentlich gar nicht mehr hingucken beim Malen :-)

When I started to paint this motif, it was overcast - and while I was painting it even started to rain briefly...I tried to capture this mood. But since the sun came out in the last half hour, it was very difficult not to paint it into the painting on the home straight... you are not allowed to look at it while painting :-)

Contis Plage – die erste Welle

 

Endlich wieder am Meer!

Es ist wieder der Atlantik, dieses mal aber weiter südlich an der Côte d'Argent im Südwesten Frankreichs.

An diese wunderschönen endlosesten Strände fahre ich nun seit über 30 Jahren ... das ist für mich Urlaub pur!

Und gleich zum Einstand malte ich zuallererst eine Welle.

Ich habe unten mal die ersten Wellen angehängt, die ich dort im Laufe der 10 Jahre meiner Pleinairmalerei gemalt habe... da sieht man doch schon ein ganz schöne Entwicklung :-)

Finally back at the ocean!

It's the Atlantic again, but this time further south on the Côte d'Argent in the southwest of France.

I've been going to these beautiful, endless beaches for over 30 years now ... for me, it's pure holiday!

And right at the beginning I painted a wave.

I have attached below the first waves that I painted there at the very beginning of my plein air painting... you can already see quite a development :-)

Weg im Spätsommer

An diesem Spätsommer Nachmittag war es doch viel heißer als erwartet - deshalb habe ich mich ind den Schatten geflüchtet und den Weg in die Streuobstwiesen am Berger Hang gemalt.

Eigentlich wollte ich nur die tunneleigen Blick ins Helle malen, dann waren die Sonnenflecken auf dem Boden aber so schön, dass ich mich am Ende mehr drauf konzentriert habe.

On this late summer afternoon it was much hotter than expected - so I took refuge in the shade and painted the path in the orchards on the Berger Hang.

Actually I only wanted to paint the tunnel-like view into the brightness, but then the dappled light on the ground was so beautiful that I concentrated more on that in the end.
