With this painting I had to hurry very much - the tide always comes much faster than thought...

But that's also good: so I remained already simple and loose...

Bretagne - Sonnenuntergang (fast)

Finally I am back in Brittany!
And immediately to welcome I painted this almost sunset.
This is about the sun position when I started, finished I was then exactly at sunset.
Only if I would paint more often sunsets here and already knew what awaits me in colors, I would be able to paint the touch down pleinair... so I paint somehow always just behind... maybe I'll make it sometime.

mein 1000. Bild!

Ich habe mein 1000. Pleinairbild gemalt.

Mai 2012

I have painted my 1000th plein air painting.

Almost exactly 10 years ago to the day I cycled for the first time with my oil paints into the fields - still without easel or Pochade box and without really knowing how it to manage to paint AllaPrima in oils (and promptly had some struggles with the paint application).

But the color mixing had worked well right away - and I was really happy with the result (and believe me, the paintings immediately afterwards were not nearly as successful: so that was just beginner's luck!)

That I number the paintings all since the first has 2 reasons:

On the one hand, I do not have to think about image titles, on the other hand, I once heard the following saying:

In every painter there are 1000 bad pictures - and they have to come out, so that the good ones come.

I found that liberating: I just have to keep at it and paint a lot, even without anything coming out, then the good ones will eventually come all by themselves....

I have painted in the 10 years in many places, in all weathers, in all seasons, at 2000 m altitude, by the sea, at night, standing in the water, in the rain, in the wind or snow, in great heat and fog.

I got stung and burned, froze and sweated; had gratifying and annoying conversations...but always I was happy to have painted right there (regardless of the result).

It's been a long journey to get here - and it's (hopefully!) far from over!

I see this motif almost every morning when I do yoga in the park or sit there for a while after my run... And finally I have painted it :-)

And tadaaaa:

This is my 999th plein air painting!!!

So in the next few days I will paint my thousandth oil painting... :-)

I discovered this jungle in the (disused) allotment gardens:

It grows so beautifully there and I had to paint all the amazing spring greens!

I paid a high price for the motif: I was totally stung!!!

Pleinairmalerei Workshop Tag 2

Sushmas 3. Ölbild

Sushma

The theme of the 2nd workshop day was water:

Painting with oil colours is totally different from painting with watercolours.

My tip here is to paint the reflection in the water very fluidly, so that the colours can be nicely wiped into each other.

The biggest challenge in plein air painting is that the surface of the water is constantly changing: Sometimes it is smooth like a mirror, sometimes it is rippled and the reflection becomes blurred - and even just a small gust of wind completely destroys the reflection....!

I think I was able to give Sushma a few things to take away with her - and I am sure that I have taken away her fear of oil paints and that she will now paint with oils more and more often in addition to her wonderful au watercolour paintings.

Pleinairmalerei Workshop Tag 1 Bild 2

This is the 2nd motif we painted on the first day of the workshop.

I thought it would be a good subject to simplify because of the strong contrast of the backlit leaves in front of the dark background - but we had to realise that the light moved and changed everything on the one hand, and on the other hand there were a lot of details to be seen that absolutely wanted to be painted :-)
Nevertheless, it was very well suited to demonstrate exactly these problems in plein air painting. In addition, I was able to give a lot of technical tips on how to apply the paint and how to remove the paint from the canvas (both of which are essential for allaprima painting!).

I painted this motif 6 years ago:

I must say: Sushma's 2nd oil painting is much better than my 345th oil painting...

Pleinairmalerei Workshop Tag 1 Bild 1

pleinairmalerei workshop

I gave a 2 day individual workshop. This time my student was a very experienced painter. However, she had only painted with watercolours so far.

Oil painting was completely new to Sushma (and totally opposite to her previous approach) - and she had not painted outside much either.

The main focus of the course was therefore the application of paint in the Alla Prima painting style - but since she was able to implement all my tips right away, it was also very much about the specifics of plein air painting:

The "right" way of seeing, simplifying and assessing the colours according to tonal value and colour temperature.

She was so motivated that we actually painted 2 paintings and stood at our easels for almost 7 hours at a stretch - but that was a bit much: we were both through that evening.

But I had fun - and I think she did too :-)

You can see in the paintings that the light was moving fast:

So Sushma couldn't just paint with me, but had to look carefully herself and create the background in her motif, which was no longer completely in the shade, in a completely different way than I did in the hour before. And I think she succeeded very well!
