Today I found another beautiful flowering bush, this time the first leaves are already sprouting. It's fun to find out exactly what colours the neutral white of the flowers in the shade have.

The blooming season is open!

Like every year, I pounce on the very first spring blossoms (I think that's a sloe... or a wild plum?)

And like every year, I struggle to capture the fluffiness of the thin petals. But at least I seem to be picking up exactly where I left off last year.

I'm sure there will be a few more attempts to get it right.

Today the sun sneakily lured me out to paint - only to disappear behind the clouds at the exact moment I set up the easel. Together with the wind it became surprisingly cold: I think I almost froze more than when I was painting snow!

With the winter colours I have now really got into the groove. Rarely have I found the barren winter nature so beautiful. Nevertheless, spring can come now for all I care...

Pochades

When I went out to paint today, I didn't realise how windy it was outside: it almost blew me away! That's why I only painted 2 very small quick pochade oil sketches. Both are only 10 x 7.5 cm.

As so often, I wish I could stay so loose with the brush in my bigger paintings.

Flache Wintersonne - lange Schatten

Wintersonne_gemalt

The still flat winter sun already casts beautifully long shadows in the afternoon... This is new, that I am so enthusiastic about the colours of this wintry nature. Usually I can hardly wait for it to turn really saturated green, but this year I'm completely in love with these unsaturated brown and green tones.

Pleinairmalerei-Workshop

This painting was my result of my first plein air workshop of the season. As a student I had Julia Ulrich, who chose this winter(!) to start plein air painting: That's what I call motivated!!! The motif is not particularly spectacular, as we had the sun at our backs. but this had the advantage that we didn't have to rush because of the light. We did a small oil sketch (pochade) beforehand to practise the motif and then transfer it to the larger format.

We both enjoyed it so much that we already made an appointment for the next workshop....

Niddamündung

 Niddamuendung_Oelbild

This is the place where the Nidder flows into the Nidda in Gronau. I was completely in love with this wintry green and tried to mix the colours as accurately as possible.

I found the reflection the most beautiful and tried to paint it very loosely and quickly, not to fiddle with it for too long.

Alter Obstbaum

Obstbaum_Ölbild

Painting this old tree in the tall winter grass was totally fun! The grass had all the colours and the light became more beautiful by the minute while painting.
